O’Sullivan, on the left of the photo stands in between a festival attendee identified as Ida and an unidentified guest holding a large bouquet of flowers. George Baker, in a striped shirt and tie, stands on the right next to Dan Donovan on the far right. While this photo is dated 1970s we might suggest it is 1972 from the glimpse of the festival brochure in Dan Donovan’s pocket. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. His colleague on the left of this photo, Robin O’Sullivan, was also a stalwart film festival committee member who went on to become its director in the late seventies following the unexpected death of festival founder Dermot Breen. He ran it during a difficult time for the festival before handing over the reins to Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan in 1985. The English actor and writer George Baker (1931-2011) was a star of cinema, stage, and television. He famously had an affair with the French actor Brigitte Bardot whilst married to the first of his three wives. However he is remembered by most for his role as Inspector Wexford in the successful Ruth Rendall crime drama television series The Ruth Rendell Mysteries (1987-2000). Baker has extensive television and film credits including The Dam Busters (Michael Anderson, 1955), Goodbye, Mr Chips (Herbert Ross, 1969) starring Peter O’Toole and Petula Clark, and The Spy Who Loved Me (Lewis Gilbert, 1977) with Roger Moore. Around the time of this photo he had completed The Executioner (Sam Wanamaker, 1970) starring Judy Geeson who also came to the Cork festival in the seventies. Baker briefly ran a successful regional theatre company during the late sixties and early seventies bringing his tour of Terence Rattigan’s The Sleeping Prince (1968) and Christopher Fry’s The Lady’s Not for Burning (1971) to the West End. A bearded Cohen, wearing a light-coloured utility jacket, is smiling as he chats with Breen. While there are few images of Norman Cohen in the archive, his fingerprints stretch into the archive via the producer Greg Smith, the actors James Mason, Lynda Bellingham, Linda Hayden, and Pamela Stephenson – all of whom were in Cork during the early 1970s. Norman Cohen’s legacy is tied up with a series of risqué X-certificate rated comedies that he worked on such as Confessions of a Pop Performer (1975) and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977) starring Bellingham and Hayden both of whom are in the archive. He also produced and directed The London Nobody Knows (1967) with James Mason, Spike Milligan’s Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (1977), based on the book by Leslie Thomas, and starring Bellingham and Stephenson. Around the time of this picture he had directed Dad’s Army in 1971 based on the popular BBC sitcom of the same name. Cohen's production of Brendan Behan’s Dublin (1966), sometimes misattributed to the BBC, was made by his production company Norcon with the producer Greg Smith – who produced many of his pictures. Written by the Irish director, actor and writer Carolyn Swift, the twenty-nine minute film was narrated by Ray McAnally as Behan, and the soundtrack was supplied by The Dubliners. It was first shown at the Cork Film Festival in September 1966 supporting the MGM film Woman Without a Face (also known as Mister Buddwing) (Delbert Mann, 1966), starring Jean Simmons and James Garner. Smith and O’Herlihy are turned towards Disney listening to him as he speaks. Behind them we notice part of a sign advertising the Cork International Film Festival. Sheamus Smith, on the left in a leather jacket, started his career as a photojournalist for the now defunct Dublin paper Evening Press before moving to Canada to study film and television. He returned to Ireland in 1961 to join the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) starting as a cameraman before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. Later he was appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). Sitting in the middle is the Cork-born RTÉ television broadcaster and Irish Film Board Chairman Bill O’Herlihy (1938-2015). He grew up in Glasheen in Cork and attended Glasheen Boys' national school, and St Finbarr’s College in Farranferris, leaving school at fifteen to join the Cork Examiner before working for RTÉ. He would become a household name best known for his sports coverage, along with co-presenters Eamon Dunphy and John Giles, on programmes such as Sunday Sport and Sports Stadium and in his time presented 10 FIFA World Cups and 10 Summer Olympic Games. O’Herlihy was a keen cinephile and brought this to his work at the film board. O’Herlihy promoted the film industry and in particular was keen to develop filming in rural Ireland; he worked for some time as PR for the Cork Film Festival where he emphasised the focus on Irish film. (Niamh Horan, Irish Independent, 28.04.2013.) Roy Disney, on the far right, cigar in hand, was the nephew of the late Walt Disney and a senior executive of the Walt Disney Company. Born in 1930 in California, he worked all his life for Walt Disney Productions and made a significant impact on its direction, striving to keep it from being split up by fellow Disney executives. Disney became an adopted native of Cork when he purchased Coolmain Castle near Killbrittan, Cork in the early 1990s and, being a keen sailor, was a regular visitor to Cork race week before his death in 2009. Youth Film Festival Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of festival director Mick Hannigan with his colleagues. The photo is undated but we might suggest that it was taken during the late 1980s/1990s when Hannigan ran the festival, after taking it over from Robin O’Sullivan in 1986. After his departure in 2013, he set up <a href="https://indiecork.com/">IndieCork Film Festival</a> with Úna Feely who was a programmer for the Cork Film Festival from 2001 until her departure in 2013. IndieCork champions short films, documentaries and independent features. Hannigan and Feely also run the independent film company Green Ray Film Agency which provides a broad range of services to filmmakers, festivals and event organisers. The photo shows Hannigan sitting on the edge of the office desk, leaning on the monitor of the IBM-type PC. His colleagues sit and stand around the desk posing for the camera. We recognise the artist Kieran O’Connor standing at the back in glasses. O’Connor is an artist and graphic designer based in Cork. A graduate of University College Cork, O’Connor worked for the festival under the stewardship of Hannigan, and his contribution to the festival can be recognised in the artwork of festival posters, programmes and logos. His art reflects a sense of place, and we can see this in his work on posters and programme covers in the archive, in particular how he often entwined the imagery of film and festival with that of Cork itself. O’Connor is a founding member of the Cork Film Centre which is a resource centre for aspiring young filmmakers in the Cork area. The centre also facilitates the successful <a href="https://firstcutfilmfestival.com/">First Cut! Youth Film Festival</a> - a youth-centred festival dedicated to showing films made by young filmmakers. In front of O’Connor, perched on the edge of the desk, we note the then press officer, Ruth Riddick, in a floral shirt. Riddick was press officer for the festival from 1990 to 1995 before serving on the Board of Directors in 1996. Riddick also worked for the Dublin Film Festival in the early nineties, and as a campaigner and activist until her move to America where she is now based. In America, Riddick works as an educator and counsellor through her education company Sobriety Together. She is a prolific writer and her work has been published in the Field Day Anthology of Irish Writing (2000), among other publications including Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum (Riddick et al, Quinnipiac University, 2002). The convivial group is dressed formally, and Marten, wearing a flower-decorated light-coloured dress, is looking up to Barry who is smoking. A whorl of smoke rises up through the air, crowning Barry, who is turned towards Marten as he listens to her. The picture is provisionally dated ‘1970s’ and would have been taken a few years before Murphy’s death in 1975. We have a particular affection for Seamus Murphy in the archive as he designed the St Finbarr statuette which was handed out as a film festival award for many years. Murphy was an Irish sculptor and stone carver with a studio based at Watercourse Road, in Blackpool, Cork. He was inspired by the writer Daniel Corkery, a teacher at his school, to attend the Cork Crawford School of Art. After receiving a scholarship he later went to Paris to study under the Irish-American sculptor Andrew O’Connor before returning to Cork and opening up his studio. Murphy was commissioned to design the Church of the Annunciation, in Blackpool, Cork, as well a number of unique carvings of statues, gravestones, and monuments around the City and beyond. Many examples of his work can be seen in the cemetery of St Finn Barre’s Cathedral especially in ‘Musicians’ Corner.’ A favourite City monument is his limestone drinking trough for dogs – tucked away at the top of Patrick’s Street under a now empty shopfront at number 121. It is marked Madraí – the Irish word for dogs. A short documentary about Seamus Murphy, <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art </a>(1958) by Louis Marcus, premiered at the festival in 1959. Murphy was married to Maigread, who was a founder of the Cork Arts Society and the Cork Film Society. She was a gifted artist in her own right and designed the well-known Paddy Irish Whisky logo. They met at the Cork Crawford School of Art and went on to have three children, the novelist Orla Murphy, the musician Colm Murphy, and the designer Bebhinn Marten who we see in this picture talking to Peter Barry. Bebhinn Marten is a knitwear designer based in Baltimore, Cork. Her company, Beacon Designs, developed during the 1970s, was one of the few knitwear companies designing and manufacturing in Ireland. However, due to the decline in the Irish woolen industry, the knitwear factory shut down and she converted the factory into a home. Title A name given to the resource Mick Hannigan outside The Long Valley Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Mick Hannigan, The Long Valley, Theo Dorgan, Peader Moynihan, Seamus Murphy Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the former festival director, Mick Hannigan, reading from a makeshift podium in front of the Long Valley Bar on Winthrop Street in Cork. To the right, leaning against the wall of the arched lobby, we note the distinctive profile of an androgynous glam-rock devotee, dressed in a brass-buttoned jacket, typical of the early 1970s when this picture was taken. The Long Valley hosts a weekly poetry event called Ó Bhéal (word of mouth) in its Hayloft Bar. So the presence of the former film festival director reading poetry from the rostrum, decorated with a poster marked Poetry “Live” All Day, might not seem incongruous to Corkonians familiar with the bohemian bent of the Long Valley. Also known as Moynihan’s Long Valley Bar, the Long Valley opened its doors in 1842. It was run for many years by Mr (Humphrey) Moynihan and Mrs (Rita) Moynihan before being taken over by their son Peader Moynihan who runs it in the same fashion as his parents, and his grandfather John Moynihan before them. It is one of the few bars in Cork that retains a snug, just inside the doors on the left, where the etched windows throw light onto the large table that was once the property of the American Embassy in Dublin. Further into the main bar, the hand-crafted tables include a singular large circular table that you’d be lucky to bag on a busy December day. In his article on the Long Valley, Dan Hickey tells us that it came from the Celtic, a White Star Line ship that ran aground off Roche’s Point near Cork Harbour in December 1928. Many patrons have sat around these historic tables with a Long Valley pint and an iconic doorstep sandwich. And, as the poet and former film festival organiser, Theo Dorgan notes: “It would take a strong man in the full of his health, with the help of three small children, to munch through their mouth-watering sandwiches.” A sculpted bust of the troubled Irish composer, Frederick May (1911-1985), by the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy, sits amongst the artworks on display in the Long Valley, and we note its presence because Murphy designed the St Finbarr statuette which was handed out to award winners in the early decades of the film festival. Title A name given to the resource Theo Dorgan with a colleague and the 1986 festival programme Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Theo Dorgan Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the celebrated Cork-born poet Theo Dorgan, on the left in a leather jacket, with an unidentified companion. They are both looking down at the programme for the 31st Cork International Film Festival which took place in 1986 (and helps us date this photo). Dorgan had just taken over the film festival that year, along with Mick Hannigan, and this photo might be from the launch of that years’ festival. Dorgan’s name, together with Hannigan, is intrinsically tied up with the film festival in the mid-eighties and beyond. They took it on together in 1986 after the resignation of the then-director Robin O’Sullivan, who had gamely run it for some years following the unexpected death of festival founder Dermot Breen in 1978. Dorgan and Hannigan ran the festival together until 1989, when Dorgan moved on following his appointment as director of Poetry Ireland. Dorgan, a graduate of University College Cork - where he also taught - is a member of the Irish arts organisation Aosdána and was an appointee of the Arts Council from 2003 to 2008. The small group are arriving into the marble lobby of the Imperial Hotel on the South Mall in Cork. Kelly, on the right next to Dermot Breen, is wearing a tweed jacket and tie, with light-coloured trousers and two-tone brogues. Born in Dublin, Kelly (1929-2012) was an Irish actor with a recognisable presence on the Irish stage and screen. His notable work includes Strumpet City (RTÉ, 1980), Into the West (Mike Newell, 1992), Waking Ned (Kirk Jones, 1998), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Tim Burton, 2005). Into the West was shown at the 2019 festival and is also preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive. Kelly had an uncredited role in The McKenzie Break (Lamont Johnson, 1970) which starred Brian Keith and the Irish actor Mary Larkin who came to the Cork festival in 1980. Around the time of this picture, which is dated 1974, Kelly would play the inept builder in an episode of Fawlty Towers ('The Builders', 1975) which won him great acclaim. In an Irish Examiner article by John Daly looking back at the film festival, David Kelly is quoted recalling the train journey from Dublin to Cork: "Irish hospitality was at its finest on that train, an elegant Orient Express atmosphere wrapped in a thoroughly Celtic welcome that made strangers who got on in Dublin lifelong friends by the time it arrived in Cork. Revelry and romance are the two words that come mostly to mind when I recall the journey." (Irish Examiner, 04.11.2017.)
