Born in Cork City, Marcus began his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1965). His first documentary film The Silent Art (1958), on the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy (1907-1975) was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1959, with music by Bernard Geary and Declan Townsend and commentary by festival stalwart Dan Donovan. Marcus was later nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light (1976) which detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. Mary Tilson, in a dark-coloured top and Movie Girl sash, was Miss Movie Girl in 1975. Miss Movie Girl was a ‘Rose of Tralee’ type contest that ran for a few brief years in the seventies. Run in conjunction with the Sunday World tabloid, it was a contest of county representatives vying for the ultimate title of 'Miss Movie Girl’. It was an enticing affair, the winner would meet with celebrities, be showered with prizes and go on to promote the festival throughout Ireland. In this picture Tilson is talking to the artist and journalist Frank Sanquest. Sanquest was a Cork-born artist who specialised in portraiture and landscapes. He was a past president of the Munster Fine Art Society and for many years was resident set designer for the Cork Opera House until it burnt down in 1954. Sanquest was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James N. Healy which toured with John B Keane plays often with the Cork actor Michael Twomey. From 1940 to 1987 he also worked as the Arts Editor for The Cork Examiner, in whose capacity he might have been attending the Film Festival press briefings. He died in 2008, age 95. Nicholas, with a glass in hand, was a founding member of the London Friends of Cork and often hosted events at the Martini Terrace in London for the festival. The 1980 film festival programme notes that this group of London-based film people raised thousands of pounds to help the development of the Cork festival. Peter Gilmore (1931-2013) is best known for his role as James Onedin in the long-running BBC series The Onedin Line which ran from 1971 to 1980. The Onedin Line was based in late 19th-century Liverpool and told the story of the rise of a shipping company and the trials and tribulations that beset the Onedin family along the way. His filmography includes 11 appearances in the Carry On film franchise including its final release Carry On Columbus (Gerald Thomas) in 1992. The small group, all holding glasses, pose for the camera in a wallpaper decorated room where other guests mill around in the background. Twenty-year old Philbin, wearing a dark jacket over a light-coloured dress tied at the neck with a ribbon, was Ireland’s 'Movie Girl' in 1973, a title she won at the Cork Film Festival where she was chosen originally from photographs published in the Sunday World newspaper in association with the festival. Title A name given to the resource Miss Movie Girl Betty Philbin and her sister Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Miss Movie Girl, Betty Philbin Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of Miss Movie Girl 1973, Betty Philbin, taken at the airport. Philbin, wearing a white suit accessorised with large sunglasses, and surrounded by her luggage, is accompanied by her sister, also in similarly large sunglasses. A similar item in the archive shows Philbin and her sister at the airport with film festival committee members and we might suppose that they are on festival business as part of the winning prize from the Miss Movie Girl competition. In October 1973 Philbin travelled to an International Congress in Venice where she hosted an Irish Whiskey event in the Hotel Excelsior in Lido, Venice. She was also a guest of the organisers of the Arnhem Film Festival in Holland that year.
