The photos are undated, but we might suggest they are from the late 1980s/early 1990s. We include the second photo of an unidentified person for its similarity to the first photo. It shows a festival colleague sitting in the same white-washed festival office as Hannigan, with its fern-like plant on the office cabinet and a poster of the German short Tour d'Amour (Veit El-Mer, 1989) which helps us date this image. The first photo shows Hannigan, mug in hand, working at his office desk under the painted cladding of the vaulted ceiling. Cork-born Hannigan had a keen interest in film since his time at University College Cork (UCC) as a member of its film society. He is a former member of the Irish Film Board, the European Film Academy, and worked as a programmer for the Irish Film Institute in the 1990s. As co-director of the Triskel Arts Centre in the eighties, Hannigan worked with Theo Dorgan, and together they ran the film festival after the resignation of O'Sullivan in 1985. In 2013, following his departure from the film festival, Hannigan set up the <a href="https://indiecork.com/">IndieCork Film Festival</a> with festival programmer Úna Feely who had worked for the Cork festival for many years. The delegates are not identified but we recognise the English actor Linda Hayden standing at the foot of the Aer Lingus stairway with Breen. Nearby two members of the British Airways cabin crew stand close by – they are wearing a uniform designed by Sir Hardy Amies (1909-2003), official dressmaker to the Queen. This particular uniform was introduced in 1972 and replaced in 1977 which helps us date this picture, dated 1970s, further. The English actor David Hemmings stands at the bottom left of the photo with his arm around an unidentified delegate. Behind him, in a light coloured dress, his then partner Prudence de Casembroot, is seen looking off into the distance. Both Linda Hayden and David Hemmings were stars of British cinema during the 1970s. Above them on the stairway, a contingent of festival delegates, a few of whom are wearing festival ribbons on their lapel, pose for the camera. The airport is not identified but we suggest the background might be of the pier building at Dublin Airport. He is also carrying a festival programme with the name ‘Ronan O’Leary’ marked on its cover. O’Leary is an Irish filmmaker who has served on juries in Cork, Berlin, Bosnia, and Croatia. The light of the projector can be seen on the crowded balcony that is home to the Farmgate Café. Downstairs, in the market foyer, the audience are seated around the cast-iron market fountain looking up at a screen out of shot. The distinct signage for the long-established Moynihan’s Poultry market stall can be seen in the background. The English Market has often been transformed into a cultural hub and ad hoc cinema over the years, be it for the Cork Film Festival or the season finale premiere of The Young Offenders in 2018. The Farmgate has been the venue for a series of film festival ‘Grand Café Screenings’ of silent classics, sometimes with live musical accompaniment, and this image might be of one of those screenings. The market dates back to King James 1 in 1610 but it began trading as a covered market in 1788. It was named the ‘English Market’ to reflect the protestant makeup of the corporation of the time – the name also distinguished it from a nearby ‘Irish Market,’ otherwise known as St. Peter’s Market, located on North Main Street at the junction of Cornmarket Street. The English Market once served the wealthier classes in Cork, while the less well-off shopped at the Irish Market. The Irish Market is long since gone and is now the Bodega Bar at Cornmarket Street, while the English Market continues to thrive. Its fortunes wax and wane in tandem with the history of the city – be it revolution, fire, recession, or coronavirus pandemic – however it continues to act as the heartbeat of the city and its importance is unquestionable. Title A name given to the resource Trevor Rhone accepting an award from Peter Barry Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Trevor Rhone, Peter Barry, Award Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Jamaican director Trevor Rhone receiving an award from the Cork politician Peter Barry. Rhone, in a white jacket, is shaking hands with the formally dressed Barry, who leans towards Rhone with a smile on his face. Trevor Rhone was a celebrated Jamaican playwright and filmmaker. He co-wrote the successful film The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972) with Perry Henzell. The Harder They Come is a gritty realist film much like the early neo-realist films of the Italian director Vittorio De Sica whom we also see in this archive. The Jamaican reggae singer Jimmy Cliff played the lead role in the film and is credited for introducing reggae music and Jamaican culture to global audiences. It was Jamaica’s first homegrown film and arguably its greatest. In Cork Rhone was awarded his first award for the best-edited film in 1972 for The Harder They Come before it travelled to Brixton’s Classic Cinema in London where Rhone had to hand out leaflets outside the cinema to woo an audience into its theatre. Soon after Rhone would achieve success and cult status in America. Title A name given to the resource François Truffaut with Betty Philbin, Lord Mayor Pat Kerrigan and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, François Truffaut, Betty Philbin, Lord Mayor, Pat Kerrigan, Dermot Breen, Miss Movie Girl Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the French film director François Truffaut, Lord Mayor Pat Kerrigan, Miss Movie Girl Betty Philbin, and the film festival director Dermot Breen. They are standing in a huddle having a conversation; Breen is half-turned towards Philbin and the Lord Mayor while Truffaut looks on. Born in 1932 François Truffaut was a French film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film critic. His career spans forty years of filmmaking and in 1959 his autobiographical film The 400 Blows ushered in French New Wave (La Nouvelle Vague) cinema with the rejection of traditional film-making structures. Around the time of this photograph, dated 1973, Truffaut had released Day for Night (1973) which won him an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. His final film was Confidentially Yours (1983) which he made as an homage to his favourite director Alfred Hitchcock. He died a year later, age 52, from a brain tumor and is buried in Paris. Lord Mayor Pat Kerrigan also died young, age 51. He served as Lord Mayor of Cork for the 1973 to 1974 term of office and was a well-regarded Irish politician and trade union official affiliated with the Labour Party. He was nominated to the 13th Seanad by Liam Cosgrave, the then Taoiseach, where he served until 1977. Kerrigan won a seat for the Cork City constituency in the 1977 general election taking his seat that year.  Pat Kerrigan is the father of Cathal Kerrigan who worked as a librarian in University College Cork for many years before his retirement in 2020. Kerrigan recently collaborated with the artist Padraig Robinson on his book Gaze Against Imperialism (Metaflux Publishing, 2019).
