The small group of five sit on a leather-covered high-backed bench, and smile for the camera. While some faces are familiar to us from the archive they remain unidentified and the only jury member identified in the photo is the Irish writer, broadcaster and cineaste Ciaran Carty. Carty was deputy editor of The Sunday Independent (1961-65) before becoming arts editor and chief critic for The Sunday Tribune (1985-2011). His books include a two-volume biography of the artist Robert Ballagh (Magill, 1986), Confessions of a Sewer Rat: A Personal History of Censorship and the Irish Cinema (New Island Books, 1995) and Writer to Writer – the Republic of Elsewhere (Lilliput Press, 2019), with interviews by Carty of great writers including Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, and Seamus Heaney. Carty was the director and curator of the annual Hennessy Literary Awards for new Irish writing and maintained and edited the featured writing in national papers over the years including the Sunday Tribune, Irish Independent, and finally The Irish Times. However, following lack of sponsorship after Hennessy withdrew in 2018, New Irish Writing ceased operation in April 2020. In 2008 Carty received the RAAM Support and Service to the Film Industry Award in recognition for his contribution to the Irish film industry. Title A name given to the resource Dinner party with Jack Lynch, Vida Breen and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Jack Lynch, Vida Breen Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of Jack Lynch at a dinner function seated with Vida Breen and others, one of whom is identified as Hank Nimbergen. Behind them their fellow diners, seated at tables decorated with candelabra, are busy eating at laden tables. Vida Breen (née Daly), wearing a white blouse over a chevron-patterned skirt, is turned to her companion, listening as he talks. She was the wife of the festival director, Dermot Breen, who died unexpectedly in 1978. Vida died almost forty years later in 2017. The Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch, seated across from Breen on the far right, is talking to his companion while resting his hands on the table. (We note that while this photo is dated 1960s, the three men in this picture are wearing brightly-patterned wide ties reminiscent of the 1970s, and not of the 1960s which favoured the narrow tie.) During the 1960s Jack Lynch worked as a parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera succeeding Sean Lemass in 1966. He would later serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. Macdougald, her hair gathered in a chignon bun, is wearing a sash marked Miss Harp Ireland across her gingham and lace-trimmed dress. Suzanne Macdougald (1945-) was a celebrated Irish model during the 1960s and 1970s. She was one of a small cohort of models, including Ann Davis, Adrienne Ring, and Grace O’Shaughnessy, that would become well-known during this time working for the designers Ib Jorgensen and Sybil Connolly. The model Grace O’Shaughnessy also came to the Cork Film Festival during the 1960s. Macdougald worked as a hostess on RTÉ’s first quiz show Jackpot (1962-1965) assisting Terry Wogan who had replaced the original host Gay Byrne. She later set up the Lad Lane Gallery in Dublin before selling up and joining Solomon Gallery in Dublin’s Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, eventually becoming its owner and director. Macdougald retired from the gallery in 2013 which was then taken over by Tara Murphy.
