Suzanne Macdougald (1945-) was a celebrated Irish model during the 1960s and 1970s. Fashion photography was just coming into focus and she was one of a small cohort of models, including Ann Davis, Adrienne Ring, and Grace O’Shaughnessy, that would become well-known during this time working for the designers Ib Jorgensen and Sybil Connolly. The Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch (1917-1999) was born in Shandon, Cork. He went to school in the North Mon and was by all accounts a great sportsman originally playing with Glen Rovers in Blackpool, Cork. Lynch loved sport and would credit it with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. He worked as parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera and succeeded Sean Lemass in 1966. Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. Crosbie and Breen, on the left of the photo, are meeting festival delegates off the Aer Lingus flight behind them. The photo identifies only the actor and director Lionel Jeffries and Larry Doyle. Lionel Jeffries (1926-2010), with his distinctive moustache, was an English actor, director and screenwriter. He served in the Second World War and was awarded the campaign medal Burma Star for his contribution to the war effort. Jeffries has an extensive filmography but is perhaps best known for The Railway Children (1970) which he wrote and directed. We note that while this photo is dated 1960s it might be 1964 as the Columbia-produced film The First Men in the Moon (Nathan Juran, 1964), starring Jeffries, was screened at the film festival that year on 17 September 1964. Columbia executives were also in attendance and might be included in this picture. Ronald ‘Ronnie’ Shiner stands on the far left of the photo with his arm over the shoulder of his companion. Shiner (1903-1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor who worked on the stage, as well as television and film. He has an extensive filmography and a career highlight includes the stage version of Worm’s Eye View (1945 to 1947) followed by a film version in 1952 with Diana Dors. In 1962, around the time this photo was taken, he had made a TV version of Worm’s Eye View for the BBC. Shiner was the subject of This is Your Life in 1958 when he was surprised by Eamon Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre. Reportedly he insured his distinctive nose, with Lloyds of London, for $30,000. While this photo is marked 1960, the RTÉ archive has a news broadcast, dated 17 September 1962, of Shiner attending the opening of the festival with the German actor Ingeborg Schöner. The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. He is shown here with Peter Barry, standing on his left, who was Lord Mayor of Cork in 1970. The small group are standing in a busy room, decorated with promotional adverts for Harp Lager. A tentative Sally Thomsett, at the centre in a dark velour jacket, looks towards Glover as he speaks. Born in 1935, Julian Glover is an English actor of stage, television and film including The Empire Strikes Back (aka Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back) (Irvin Kershner, 1980), For Your Eyes Only (John Glen, 1981), and as the voice of Aragog, the giant spider in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) directed by Chris Columbus. Most recently he had a recurring role in Game of Thrones (2011-2016) as Grand Maester Pycelle, and has appeared in an episode of the historical television series The Crown (2019). Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Glover had appeared in Nicholas and Alexandra (Franklin J Schaffner, 1971), and Antony and Cleopatra (1972) directed by Charlton Heston who also played the main role of Mark Antony. The film was made by Rank Organisation who were key players in the early days of the film festival and would sent their stars and representatives to the festival – some of whom can be seen in the archive. Glover, standing next to a young woman identified as Yvonne O’Reilly, is looking towards Sally Thomsett in this picture. Thomsett, born in 1950, is an actor best known for her role as one of the children (Phyllis Waterbury) in the 1970 film The Railway Children directed by Lionel Jeffries. Around the time of this photo she had just completed the thriller Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971) starring Dustin Hoffman and the Irish actor Jim Norton. On the far right the fair-haired actor Shane Briant, in a velvet jacket over a white ruffled tuxedo shirt, is turned towards his companion, identified as Nora Prendergast from Cork. Briant is best known for his roles in Hammer Film Productions and worked with Virginia Wetherell, who also came to the festival in 1972, in the British horror film Demons of the Mind (1972) directed by Peter Sykes. The three of them are chatting and laughing while standing facing each other. Jane Asher, on the left of the photo, is wearing a light-coloured polo-neck jumper and is looking over to a smiling Sinéad Cusack, who is wearing an embroidered high-neck shirt under a checkered jacket. Farina, in the middle of the group, with a festival ribbon pinned to the lapel of his jacket, leans in as he chats. The back of the photo notes that Corrado Farina was at the festival as a member of the Jury that year in a photo marked 1972. He directed two horror feature films during the 1970s: They Have Changed Their Face (1971) and Baba Yaga (1973). The American actor Carroll Baker, who was in Cork in the same year as Farina, played the part of ‘Baba Yaga’ – a middle-aged seductress who ultimately controls the main character Valentina, played by Isabelle De Funès, through a doll that she gives her. Baba Yaga was based on the graphic stories written by the Italian Guido Crepax who is famous for his ‘Valentina’ series of books. Crepax is also a keen wargamer and is the author of the first wargames to be published in Italy. Jane Asher, on the left of the photo, is an English actor, writer and businesswoman with a particular interest in baking. She has worked in film, theatre, radio and television since she was a young child. Her filmography includes the under-rated Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowksi, 1970) (with music by Cat Stevens), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert, 1966) with Michael Caine, and the British sitcom The Old Guys. At the time of this picture, marked 1972, Asher starred in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (Waris Huessein, 1972) where she played the part of Jane Seymour. Asher is a shareholder in the magazine Private Eye and has written many books including best-selling novels and lifestyle books. Born in Dublin she is the daughter of the actor Maureen Cusack and the actor Cyril Cusack. She is married to the actor Jeremy Irons who appeared with her in Stealing Beauty (Bernardo Bertolucci, 1996). Most recently she was the winner of the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Actress for Our Few and Evil Days in 2015. Her film work includes Hoffman (Alvin Rakoff, 1970) with Peter Sellers which was released around the time of this photograph.
