The photo is dated 1968, taken a few years after her infamous role as Nurse Fearing opposite Sean Connery in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). In this photo Peters is lying on her side, wearing light-coloured trousers and a checkered shirt, while holding up a guidebook to Cork City. A map is spread out on the car bonnet next to her and she is smiling while looking towards the camera. Mollie Peters was the stage name of Vivien Humphrey, an English actor. Despite her fame with being the first Bond girl to take her clothes off on-screen she had a short-lived film career, due mainly to contractual disagreements with her agent which forestalled her career and she had mostly given up acting by the time of this photo. Byrne is standing next to Peters who is sitting on a beer key, wearing a white fur jacket over a dark dress, and drinking a pint of Guinness. On her right O’Shaughnessy, in a long white dress, poses decorously holding onto the large promotional umbrella. Grace O’Shaughnessy was a top Irish model in the 1960s based in Dublin. In 1966, when working in the Lebanon as a secretary, she was named as the ‘Ideal Woman of Europe’ in an Italian competition. She worked with the fashion designers Sybil Connolly, Ib Jorgensen and Nellie Mulcahy. She returned to Ireland and set up a modelling agency, as well as working as a fashion TV presenter for RTÉ during the 1970s and 1980s. She has been an ambassador for Women’s Aid, and for Third Age which is dedicated to the well-being of older people. Her companion in this picture is Mollie (sometimes known as Molly) Peters born in 1939. Peters was the stage name of Vivien Humphrey, who grew up in Suffolk, England. She started out as a model for men’s magazines but achieved cult cinema status for appearing as the sensuous Nurse Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007, in the first Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). Koval, on the left with glass in hand, is smiling directly at the camera while Breen is turned towards his companion. Kazma is wearing a light-coloured satin dress accessorised with a glass bead necklace. Her dark hair is tied up and she is smiling broadly. The photo, marked with the details of a London-based photographer, was probably taken in London at a reception held by the London Friends of Cork at the Martini Terrace. The journalist Koval was a frequent guest of the festival. He was a respected film critic who had a positive impact on the public representation of the festival during the 1960s. He attended international film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Locarno in Switzerland, and Cork, and his reviews were published in publications from Germany, France, Switzerland, and America. Koval always presented Cork in a most congenial fashion and was instrumental in keeping Cork on the radar of the international press until his death in 1970. Title A name given to the resource Taoiseach Jack Lynch and Lord Mayor Seán Casey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, Lord Mayor, Seán Casey Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor Seán Casey walking with Jack Lynch who would have been Taoiseach at the time of this photo in 1966. They walk down a narrow corridor closely flanked either side by young sea cadets in full uniform. This is a rare photo of Seán Casey in the archive; he was an Irish Labour Party politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork on three occasions: in 1956, 1962, and 1966 as in this photo. He was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Labour Party TD for Cork on four occasions before his untimely death in 1967, age 45. He had a memorable meeting with President John F Kennedy in 1963 when the President came to Cork. They travelled to the Cork City Hall in an open-top car and he gave a speech of which Kennedy noted “Once again I’m reminded that the Irish have not lost their ability to speak.” Within four years of their meeting both President Kennedy and Seán Casey would be dead. ('The Proud Son', Irish Independent, 15.06.2013) In this photo Casey walks alongside local man, Jack Lynch, who was born in Cork in 1917. Lynch went to school in the North Mon and his sporting prowess encouraged employers to take him on. He started off working with the Civil Service in Cork before training to be a lawyer and moving to Dublin to work at the District Court, alongside playing for the Dublin Football Club who won their first Dublin Senior Football Club Championship in 1944 on his timely arrival. Lynch was called to the bar and left the Civil Service in 1945 before being approached to declare for Fianna Fail in the 1946 by-election in Cork. He declined as his friend ‘Pa’ McGrath was standing (McGrath features in this archive on a number of occasions) but it instigated an interest in politics for Lynch who would contest elections for the coming years and work successfully with McGrath in the Dáil. Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. He was involved in the dismissal of four ministers during the Arms Trial of May 1970, including Charles Haughey, Neil Blaney, Kevin Boland and Michael Moran. (Gerry Jones, a witness in the trail, also features in our archive). Presciently he noted that one of the difficulties dealing with the British is that they are not very well acquainted with the issue of the North and he tried to address it with the British Prime Minister Edward Heath in 1971. Lynch loved sport and would credit it with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. We can see how the vagaries of his life fluctuated as with any match and his is a legacy that prevails in the history of Cork and beyond. Title A name given to the resource Noel Purcell with Roy Hammond and others Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Noel Purcell, Roy Hammond, Stephen Coughlan Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo, dated 1966, of the Irish actor Noel Purcell having his beard pulled by a congenial group of colleagues. Purcell, at the centre, is leaning forward, with a mock-startled look on his face, while his greying beard is being tweaked. The photo notes two names at the back of the photo - that of  Roy Hammond and Stephen Coughlan. We recognise the work of Roy Hammond throughout this archive as his studio stamp graces the back of many photos. He was a photojournalist for the Cork Examiner and before that the Irish Press. Originally from England Hammond moved to Cork after meeting, and marrying, his wife Rose Sheppard from Albert Road, Cork City, setting up a photography studio at 33 St Patrick’s Street. Hammond was an army photographer during World War II and would later work for the Imperial War Crimes Commission in Berlin. As well as his work as a press photographer for the Cork Examiner Hammond was a cameraman for RTÉ until his retirement in 1992. On his death in 1996 the Examiner obituary noted: "Roy covered all the major stories, both in Cork and nationally, he covered nearly every major story you could think of, he was a great newsman and a thorough gentleman." James Mason (1909-1984) was an English actor who found success in England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland.  Some of the aerial warfare scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Cork where James Mason, as General von Klugermann, flew several times under the spectacular railway bridge which spans the River Blackwater. A young Legendre, in a herringbone tweed jacket, is shown in profile listening to a Marcus on the right. Both are wearing festival pins on their jackets and if we zoom into those pins we can see that the pin on Legendre’s jacket is marked ‘delegate’ and the pin on Marcus’ jacket is marked ‘Jury’. The room behind them is crowded and, with Marcus holding a drink in his hand, we might guess that this is a reception held for the delegates of the film festival. There is no information to corroborate the identity of Legendre but we appreciate the presence of local man turned film director, Louis Marcus, at the festival. Marcus was born in Cork City to an Irish Jewish family. He attended University College Cork before beginning his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1961). Marcus would continue to work on Gael-Linn documentaries until 1973. His first documentary <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958) on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prize-winners at the Cork Film Festival for some years. Title A name given to the resource Peter O'Toole with Dermot Breen and Leslie Mallory Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Peter O'Toole, Dermot Breen, Leslie Mallory Description An account of the resource This is a sepia-toned photograph, dated 1963, of the actor Peter O’Toole walking with the festival director Dermot Breen and the journalist Leslie Mallory. All three are shown smiling whilst in conversation. A dapper-looking O’Toole, in glasses on the far right of the photo, is looking towards Breen and Mallory with a broad grin. Mallory on the far left, in sunglasses and hand in pocket, walks alongside Breen who is smiling as he steps forward. We might guess that Mallory and Breen are meeting O’Toole on the tarmacadam of Cork Airport which had recently opened in 1961. Leslie Mallory was an RTÉ news reporter who died in 2006, age 81. He worked in RTÉ radio and television news for most of his career. He also dabbled in film production and wrote a script of a feature film at the behest of Peter Sellers. He moved back to Ireland from London in the 1970s and was a senior foreign editor by the time of his retirement. By all accounts he was a beloved colleague. (Dermot Mullane, Sunday Independent, 26.03.2006.) Peter O’Toole (1932-2013) was a British actor of Irish descent. He was either born in Connemara, Co. Galway or Leeds in England depending on his telling. A stage and film actor of Irish descent he was a Shakespearean actor with the Bristol Old Vic with whom he played many parts including Hamlet (1958, 1963) and Waiting for Godot (1958), which he reprised at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1969. His love for the theatre was such that he would turn down film roles stating that “You’ve got to go to Stratford when you get the chance.” (Stephen Watts, New York Times, 05.02.1961.) O'Toole achieved international recognition for his part as TE Lawrence in Lawrence of Arabia (David Lean, 1962) which was released a year before this photo was taken. He holds the record for the most Academy Award nominations for acting without receiving a win including aforementioned Lawrence of Arabia, The Lion In Winter (Anthony Harvey, 1968), Mr Chips (Herbert Ross, 1969), and the British comedy-drama Venus (Roger Mitchell, 2002) written by Hanif Kureishi. He did however receive an honorary Academy Award in 2003 which might have assuaged his missing out on earlier nominations. O'Toole died in London, age 81, and his ashes taken to the West of Ireland. He was a friend of the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins, who spent time with him in Galway over the years, and who speaks fondly of him: “He was unsurpassed for the grace he brought to every performance on and off the stage.” (www.thejournal.ie, 15.12.2013.) Marked 1962 the photo identifies four of the revellers to be the actor Ronnie Shiner, the local businessman Donal Crosbie, Norma Crosbie and Edmond Purdom, an English actor, voice artist, and director. The room is packed with a well-dressed crowd in the midst of a sing-song and includes, at the back of the room by the wooden door, three uniformed Gardaí. At the centre of the photo, we can make out the distinctive profile of the British actor Ronald Shiner with his arms raised. Known as ‘Ronnie’, Shiner (1903-1966) was a British stand-up comedian and comedy actor who worked on stage, television and film. A career highlight included the stage version of Worm’s Eye View (1945 to 1947) followed by a film version in 1952 with Diana Dors. In 1962, around the time this photo was taken, he had made a TV version of Worm’s Eye View for the BBC. Shiner was the subject of This is Your Life in 1958 when he was surprised by Eamon Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre. Based on photographs in Roy Hammond's own book, Media Memories of Cork (1994), we have reason to that one of the obscured figures is that of Mexican actress Linda Christian. Purdom and Christian were married to each other for the short period of 1962-1963 and so they would have been a couple at the time of this visit to Cork. The party is taking place in the MacCurtain Street Garda Station which was located at 58 MacCurtain Street. It was originally a house built c.1830 before its use as a Garda station and constabulary barracks. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage describes it as a terraced three-bay four-storey former house, over basement, as a pair with the adjoining former house to the west. A flight of limestone steps, framed by cast-iron railings, lead to a round-headed door opening. The station was closed in 2013, as part of a programme of Garda station closures around Ireland.
