Standing on the left Hidari is holding a St Finbarr statue, the design of which is attributed to the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy. Her companion, dressed in a taffeta-style evening gown and striped linen-style scarf, is cradling the Waterford Glass trophy in the crook of her left arm.  Hidari is wearing a light-coloured kimono which is a traditional formal Japanese robe, usually made of hand-dyed silk and worn on special occasions. Hidari's kimono is tied at her waist with a metallic-coloured wide sash (known as an obi) which is wrapped around her waist and tied in the front with a bow. The lower half of the kimono is elaborately designed with images of simple huts which might be a reference to traditional Japanese tea houses. Sachiko Hidari (1930-2001) was a Japanese actor and film director. Born in the Toyama Prefecture she became an actor in 1952 when she was 22 years old. The Historical Dictionary of Postwar Japan (William D Hoover, 2018) notes that she received international recognition in 1957 when she received the award for best actor at the Cork Film Festival for her role in Kamiska Shiro No Hanzai (The Crime of Shiro Kamisaka) (1956), directed by Hisamat-su Seiji. By all accounts, she was an independent-minded woman who stepped outside the passive social role expected of Japanese women during this era. In 1977 she was the first Japanese woman to direct a film with Töi Ippon No Michi (Far Road) in which she also starred. It was the story of a railroad worker's wife set over the course of 30 years and was financed by the Japanese National Railway Workers' Union as it was difficult to get funding from the big studios (The New York Times, 12.02.1978). We note this photo is dated 1960 but Sachiko Hidari was given her award for best actor in 1957, so we bear this in mind. Interestingly, if this photo is from 1957 it was taken a year after she was threatened in Japan by gangsters from the yakuza crime syndicate. The yakuza were believed to have been hired by the Nikkatsu Film Company to intimidate her for daring to become an independent freelance actor outside of their control (The New York Times, 12.02.1978). The back of the photo identifies only Gerry Jones but we recognise the film festival director Dermot Breen, Frank Poole and the lady (who might be his wife) from other photos in the archive. The convivial gathering are all smiling looking up at the camera. On the far left a bespectacled Poole is smiling up at the camera seated next to Dermot Breen who is half-turned towards him. Frank Poole was a managing director of Rank Film Productions, London during the 1960s until his retirement in the late 1970s. The Rank Organisation was a British film company whose contract players made regular appearances at the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s in particular. On the far right Gerry Jones, with a distinctive dark eye-patch over his right eye, is seated looking down towards the table. Jones might be considered an incongruous addition to the group; he was a Dublin business man who was a notable figure of 1970s Ireland when he stood by the then Taoiseach Charles Haughey during the 1970 'Arms Trial'. The trial involved the indictment, and ultimate acquittal, of Haughey and his colleague Neil Blaney for the alleged involvement in a conspiracy to smuggle arms to the IRA in Northern Ireland. In 2001 the Irish Independent reported that secret British papers released by the Public Record Office in London noted that all twelve jurors at the time had been contacted by Gerry Jones (since deceased) in order to intimidate them but this was not substantiated ('Jones 'tracked arms trial jurors', Irish Independent, 19.04.2001). The award is placed on a small circular table in a dining room where we can just make out some people milling around in the background. One of the men appear to be wearing a mayoral chain and given the date of the award we might suspect that this is the Fine Gael politician Jim Corr (1934-) who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1979. The award itself is distinctive consisting of three bronze, or pewter, skeletal attenuated figures, much in the style of the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti. The figures are leaning in towards each other whilst holding their arms aloft towards a European Union logo similar to the Euro symbol. This euro symbol, adorned with a dove in this case, was (and is) a tangible symbol of European unity for citizens of the European Union. The Cork Film Festival was particularly indebted to European Union funding during this era via the MEDIA Programme of the European Union designed to support the European film and audio-visual industries. The Martini Terrace is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House located at the corner of Haymarket and the Pall Mall in London. It was built in 1959 and was, and is, a controversial building being the only skyscraper in this locality. The terrace was used for receptions and launches and has a view over Trafalgar Square. In 1992 it was listed Grade II cementing its place in the architectural history of London. Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972. (So while this photo is not dated we can date it as 1972 given his term of office.) O'Leary studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. He noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honors of his life. ('Esteemed judge, mayor and senator was a backroom giant', Irish Independent, 06.01.2007) In this image O'Leary is standing at the altar of the Byzantine-styled red-brick Church and Friary of St Francis which is distinguished by its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light, and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Umberto Noni. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr Mass. Koval, standing on the right with a martini glass in his hand, had a positive impact on the public representation of the festival during the 1960s and was instrumental in keeping Cork on the radar of the international press until his death in 1970. This picture was taken in London at an event hosted by the London Friends of the Festival held at the Martini International Club whose logo is printed on the front of these promotional photographs. The Martini Terrace is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House located at the corner of Haymarket and the Pall Mall in London. Built in 1959 the building has attracted controversy for being the only skyscraper in this locality. Title A name given to the resource Closing Night with Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse in 1967 Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Pearse Wyse, Lord Mayor, St Finbarr Awards Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the closing night of the festival in 1967 and shows guests and dignitaries seated across the expanse of the City Hall stage. A small white table at the front of the stage displays four St Finbarr statuettes, together with a Waterford crystal award. Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse is seated just behind the table and is looking towards his right while clapping his hands. Born in Cork, Pearse Wyse (1928-2009) was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. A firm supporter of Jack Lynch he was a formidable opponent of Charles Haughey and was a member of the so-called 'Gang of 22'. Disillusioned with the Fianna Fáil party he went on to found the Progressive Democrats where he held a seat as a TD in the 1987 and 1989 elections. The photograph does not identify the guests but we note that the only woman on the stage of fourteen men is 'Miss Movie Girl 1967' who is seated next to the festival director Dermot Breen. We can make out Gus Healy sitting next to Breen. Healy was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. Title A name given to the resource James Mason and Ted O'Brien Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, James Mason, Ted O'Brien Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo, dated 1965, of the English actor James Mason and Ted O'Brien standing side-by-side and both turned to their right in conversation with a lady (we can only see her hands in this photo). Both men are wearing dinner jackets accessorised with a bow-tie and a pin on the left lapel. The light of the camera illuminates Mason, with his grey-flecked hair, and bounces off his cheek bones. His shorter colleague, with dark hair and horn-rimmed glasses, looks on towards the companion to whom they are speaking. James Mason (1909-1984) appears a couple of times in the archive. Born in England he found success in both England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. He was nominated for three Academy Awards for A Star is Born (George Cukor, 1954) with Judy Garland, Lolita (Stanley Kubrick, 1962) and the Silvio Narizzano award-winning film Georgy Girl (1966) with Lynn Redgrave and Charlotte Rampling. Mason was one of the early players in the Hollywood studio production system and negotiated strongly for contractual rights allowing him economic and creative freedom. Interestingly he registered as a conscientious objector during the Second World War.
