Sweeney (1909-1991) was an RTÉ radio broadcaster and producer; the RTÉ archives notes that he started work with RTÉ in the 1950s and was a producer on RTÉ Radio's Sunday Miscellany for many years. He is shown in this photo wearing a dark suit and holding a microphone close up towards Addams, who is caught in mid-conversation with him. Addams is wearing a light-coloured dress tied at the waist and is shown resting her right elbow on the table next to her, which also holds the recording equipment. In her left hand she holds a cigarette and wears a small watch at her wrist. Addams had an illustrious and somewhat controversial relationship with the film festival. Due in part she admitted years later to the advice of her publicist advising her to court publicity. She is shown mid-bite, eating a sausage, smiling up towards the camera. Markus is dressed in a light-coloured sleeveless evening gown decorated with pearl-like beading. Two clips tie her blonde wavy hair back behind her ears. Flowers adorn the table in front of her. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love (Gustav Ucicky, 1939). Markus would follow this with mostly leading roles in films of all genres from the war through to the post-war period. Her filmography includes Nothing but Trouble with Love (Thomas Engel, 1956), You are Twice Young (Helmut Weiss, 1958), What a Woman Dreams of in Spring (Erik Ode, 1959) and A Woman's Secret (1960). In the early sixties she retired from film and would only appear in television and theatre appearances until her death in 2002 from pneumonia. Breen, standing to the right, is photographed looking up at the poster, which is decorated with small flags from around the world and takes up much of the wall space behind him. Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Italian film director and actor Vittorio De Sica leaving the Savoy cinema, Cork. Above De Sica we see posters advertising the comedy film Cannon Serenade (Wolfgang Staudte, 1958) in which De Sica starred as the captain of a small coastal freighter fitted with a little cannon in case of enemy attack during World War II. Born in Naples De Sica came from a poor family and as a young man worked as an actor. De Sica was considered a successful matinee idol of the Italian theatre and movies before turning to directing in 1940. His success with The Children Are Watching Us (De Sica, 1944), Shoeshine (De Sica, 1946) and Bicycle Thieves (De Sica, 1948) established him as one of the great Italian directors of all time. In particular Bicycle Thieves - an neo-realist drama which considered the poverty of post-war Italy - won a special honorary Oscar before the foreign film category was officially established. In this photo we also see a poster advertising his personal appearance at the Savoy that evening. Crowds gather around him on the right and left of the marble steps of the cinema. Sporting a dark mustache, De Sica is dressed in a dinner suit accessorised with a bow-tie and is looking down as he steps forward. To his front a cinema usher, wearing a two-piece suit with a long coat decorated with gilt buttons down its front, escorts the director down the steps. Ushers were known as 'commisionaires' in the early days of the Savoy and while the usher in this photo is not identified, John McSweeney notes in his book on the Golden Age of Cork Cinemas (2013), that there was a well known head usher called John ('Johnno') O'Connell from Blarney Street in Cork who worked at the Savoy during the early days of its existence. They are standing side-by-side holding an award that has been presented to Mann by the twelfth Cork International Film Festival, September 1967. Delbert Mann (1920-2007) was an Oscar-winning American television and film director; he directed Borgnine in Marty (1955) which won him an Oscar for Best Director. It was the first American film to win a Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Ernest Borgnine (1917-2012) was a popular and well-known American actor noted for his gap-toothed grin. He has an extensive filmography and also won an Oscar for Marty (Best Actor). He would work until his ninth decade and earned an Emmy nomination aged 92 for his role in ER. He was also the voice of 'Mermaid Man' on SpongeBob SquarePants from 1999 until his death in 2012. Borgnine would receive the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award at the 17th Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2011, a year before his death in 2012 aged 95. We can see the back of the choir, facing the conductor, as they sing. The conductor is looking down at his music - his arms raised in gesticulation. To the right of the choir an organist, his music strewn on the lid of the piano, accompanies the choir. Below them we can see the congregation seated in church pews that stretch before us and up as far as the mosaic-tiled apse that surrounds the marble altar. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. With its Byzantine-styled red-brick exterior the Church and Friary of St Francis was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Whilst typical in style for 1950s Ireland it retains notable interior fittings that distinguish it, such as its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Professor Umberto Noni who declared it to be 'the very crowning of [his] life's work'.
