The Lord Mayor, wearing the chain of office, is turned towards Geary, in a three-piece tweed suit, holding what seems to be a programme or image for the festival-commissioned Mass of Saint Finbarr. The 1973 film festival programme notes that Geary composed and conducted the Mass of Saint Finbarr that year. The mass was first performed at the Church of St. Francis, in Cork, with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film International Children’s Choir. Owens, standing in the middle of this photo looking towards the Mayor, was a well-known radio performer with radio programmes including Melody from Munster, Songs of the Night, and Music of the Nation. He worked with Bernard Geary and gained success with his solo performance in Geary’s Mass of Saint Finbarr on the Aisling record label. Both men, dressed in evening wear, stand in front of microphones on a stage draped in curtains. They stare out to an unseen audience with smiles on their lips and hands clasped behind their backs. Twomey, on the right, is remembered best for his stage work, in particular his work with Frank Duggan, playing the part of Cha in RTÉ’s Hall’s Pictorial Weekly. The photo was formerly framed and marked with details of the small group on its front and includes, from left to right, the Canadian Ambassador, James Joachim McCardle, the Canadian film director and producer Roger Blais, festival director Dermot Breen and Lord Mayor Peter Barry. The formally dressed group are smiling for the camera and Blais and Breen appear to be exchanging a small memento. Behind them the crowded room is decorated with the harp lager logo and poster (‘Harp Sir!’) and, at the lower-left corner of the photo, a lady is inadvertently caught in the image looking down. Ireland has exchanged Ambassadors with Canada since 1949 when Ireland left the Commonwealth, and McCardle was the Canadian Ambassador to Ireland from 1968 to 1972. McCardle was no doubt at the festival accompanying the Canadian filmmaker Roger Blais (1917-2012) whose films include Royal Journey (David Bairstow, Gudrun Parker, Roger Blais, 1951) and Grierson (aka Monsieur John Grierson) (Roger Blais, 1972) both of which won the Canadian Film Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary. Grierson was a documentary film of the noted Scottish film and documentary maker John Grierson who founded the National Film Board of Canada (NFBC). Blais had a close relationship with Grierson who recruited him to the NFBC in 1945. Grierson was jury president of the Cork Film Festival in 1958 and an image of him, sitting with the Iranian-German film producer Vasgen Badal, Dermot Breen, and Donal Crosbie, can be viewed in the archive. Peter Barry (1928-2016), on the far right next to Dermot Breen, was a Cork-born Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1970 to 1971. He would go on to serve at eight successive elections including a stint as deputy leader under Garret Fitzgerald in 1979, Minister for the Environment from 1981 to 1982, and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1982 to 1983 until his retirement after the 1997 general election – giving up his seat to his daughter Deirdre Clune. However, it is as a tea-maker that many Corkonians remember Peter Barry and his family. 'Barry’s Tea' has around 40 percent of the Irish tea market with a loyal following in Cork and beyond. The photo notes that the party was a ‘Farewell to Captain Denis Gould’ who was festival secretary since its inception in 1956. The convivial crowd are gathered around Gould who is standing at the centre, wearing a light-coloured jacket, his right hand outstretched towards festival director Dermot Breen, who is kneeling, cigarette in hand, looking up at Gould. With his left hand Gould clasps the hand of the politician, and former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy. We also recognise Robin O’Sullivan standing at the back on the left, under the fanlight wall sconce. O’Sullivan stepped in to run the film festival after the unexpected death of Breen in 1978, and ran it until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took over in the early eighties. The large group, of approximately forty men and women, appear to be singing, and some of the women in the front row hold hands, with arms across their bodies, as if singing the Scottish tune Auld Lang Syne to bid farewell to their friend and colleague. Scholz, wearing a velvet cape over a dark dress trimmed with white fur, is shown in profile smiling up at Breen as they chat. Whorls of smoke from Breen's cigarette float past the festival ribbon pinned to his lapel. The photo appears to be signed in dark ink across the lower half of the picture. The photo is undated but we place it c.1959 when Scholz came to Cork for the screening of The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Das Mädchen vom Moohof) (Gustav Ucicky, 1958) starring Claus Holm, who also came to Cork. The film was shown at the festival on 30th September 1959. The 1959 festival programme notes that the film was based on a novel by the Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf and deals with love, lust and violence in a small Swedish town. The small group of six men pose for the camera smiling, on and around a staircase. While the men are unidentified we recognise Robin O’Sullivan and Gus Healy, second left on the staircase, from the archive. Healy was a Fianna Fáil politician who served Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. His presence in the festival archive goes as far back as the late 1950s when he appears in an image of the original Tóstal Council alongside the then Lord Mayor Patrick McGrath, and festival founder Dermot Breen. On Breen’s unexpected death in 1978 O’Sullivan, standing on the far right in this image in a dark suit and hand in pocket, took over and kept the festival going until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took up the cudgels in the mid-eighties. The photo has a note marked on the front in blue ink: First Cork International Film Festival, May 1956. Elliman, in a dark suit with his left hand in his pocket, was an Irish impresario who managed many of Ireland's cinema screens during the 1950s. He brought film production to Ireland opening the Ardmore Studios, with Emmet Dalton, in 1958. Elliman was involved with the early planning of the Cork Film Festival, advising and encouraging the festival founder Dermot Breen. The website louiselliman.com notes that he was a regular at the festival during the remaining 11 years of his life and, on its 10th anniversary, his name was included in a select list of international patrons. Title A name given to the resource Colm Ó Laoghaire accepting the St Finbarr statuette in 1962 Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Colm Ó Laoghaire, Colm O'Leary, St Finbarr Statuette, Award, RTÉ, Niall Tóibín, Séamus Murphy, Arthur Watkins Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Irish filmmaker Colm Ó Laoghaire accepting an award from Arthur Watkins, president of the International Federation of Film Producers Association. The award was for the best film in the educational section for the Irish-spoken Fior Uisce (Water Wisdom), which was sponsored by the Department of Local Government. Narrated by Niall Tóibín, and filmed in Ring and Old Parish, Waterford, it was aimed at encouraging rural communities to provide themselves with piped water, at a time when four out of five homes relied on non-tapped water. Ruth Barton notes in her book, Irish National Cinema (Routledge, 2004:68), that Ó Laoghaire’s film was so close to Soviet filmmaking practices, both in style and temperament, the Soviet delegation at the 1962 Cork Film Festival expressed an interest in inviting Ó Laoghaire to the (then) USSR. As well as working for RTÉ, Ó Laoghaire also produced and directed Gael Linn cinema newsreels for many years. In addition to Fior Uisce, his filmography includes Tony Bacillus & Co (1946), a short silent film which used puppets to fight the tuberculosis germ, Irish Gossamer (1958), which was commissioned by the Irish Tourist Board to encourage visitors to Ireland, and Gaeltacht, a series of programmes looking at life in the Gaeltacht in the late 1960s. Colm Ó Laoghaire died in Dublin in 2007. The uncredited photo was taken in Hollywood, USA, and was found among the archive papers. We note that a tribute programme of Stanely Kramer's work was introduced by Professor Robert Gessner at the Cork festival in 1966. Gessner chose six of Kramer's films for the festival and wrote an article for that year's programme. Kramer (1913-2001) was a renowned Oscar-winning film director and producer. In general, he made films that tried to address social issues such as racism, greed, and war. Kramer has an extensive filmography which includes The Defiant Ones (1958), Inherit the Wind (1960), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and the comedy film It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. In this picture, Kramer is being presented the award by Katherine Hepburn (1907-2003) who had just finished Kramer’s Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner (1967) with Sidney Poitier and a frail Spencer Tracy, her partner of 26 years who would die soon after the film was made. Kramer also directed the German actor Heinz Rühmann in Ship of Fools (1965) starring Vivien Leigh in her final screen role. Rühmann came to the Cork festival and a couple of undated images of him can be seen in the festival archive. Since 2002 the Producers Guild of America awards the Stanley Kramer Award for films that "illuminate provocative social issues." In 2002 it was awarded to In America (2002) directed by the Irish playwright and director Jim Sheridan.
