Breen is shown sitting at a desk looking back at the camera while the screen before him shows a wilderness landscape with a cowboy at its centre. A curl of smoke can be seen under the bright light of the lamp on his desk. Breen was very much the driving force behind the inception of the festival and was at its helm until his untimely death in 1978. A large crowd, held back by young men in white slacks and shirts, are gathered in front of the City Hall to watch the Lord Mayor and colleagues raise the flag, which flutters in the wind above their heads. The Cork Film Festival emerged from the tourist festival An Tóstal (1953-1958), a pageant held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image and whose self-stated primary object was to increase its tourist industry and ‘appreciate the beauties of our own land’. While this photo does not identify the dignitaries in this picture we recognise the back of Lord Mayor Patrick McGrath at the flag; he served as Lord Mayor from 1952-1955 which helps us date this picture to his mayoralty. Behind him, on the marble steps of the City Hall, we recognise the low stature of the Cork Fianna Fáil politician Gus Healy who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. The all-male symphony orchestra is not identified but we note that they are all standing, as is the audience, and they might be playing the National Anthem at the end of the concert. The photo notes that this photo was taken during the ‘Tóstal era’ so we might date it to the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork in 1953. Tóstal was a festival held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image and lift the country from a period of economic depression. Music was very much a part of this rebranding with the establishment of the Cork Choral Festival in 1954 spearheaded by Aloys Fleischmann (1910-1992) who founded the Cork Symphony Orchestra in 1934. Fleischmann was a member of the Cork Tóstal Council from 1952 to 1954, and would go on to be the director of the Cork International Choral Festival from 1967 to 1987. The photo is undated but we can suggest the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork. The Cork Film Festival emerged from An Tóstal (1953-1958), which was a pageant, or festival, held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image. While this photo does not identify the ten council members we do recognise some of their faces from the archive. A young Dermot Breen stands in the middle at the back – he went on to found the film festival in 1956 and would run it until his death in 1978. Gus Healy (1904-1987) stands on the far left, hands in pocket. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. A grey-haired Patrick ‘Pa’ McGrath stands at the centre of the group. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who represented Cork in Dáil Éireann between 1946 and 1956. McGrath served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952 to 1956. He took an active part in the Irish War of Independence and was honoured by his comrades by appointing him chairman of the Cork City Old IRA Men’s Association. McGrath died suddenly in 1956 and was honoured by Taoiseach John A Costello in the Dáil, who spoke highly of him in the Dáil Éireann debate that June. Title A name given to the resource John Warrington and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, John Warrington, BBC, Dermot Breen Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English director and producer John Warrington with festival director Dermot Breen. The two are shown in conversation and an animated Warrington, wearing a belted mackintosh-style jacket, has his hand raised as he makes his point. While Breen, cigarette in mouth and pen in hand, looks up to Warrington as he speaks. John Warrington (1916-1998) was a BBC producer and director known for The Sky Larks (1958), The Men from Room 13 (1959) and Silent Evidence (1962). He was a producer for the BBC series The Grove Family (1957-1957) which was created by Roland Pertwee and Michael Pertwee, who also came to the film festival during the 1970s. Much-loved, in its day, The Grove Family, named after the BBC Lime Grove Studios, is generally regarded as the first British TV soap opera. She is posing for the camera in a garden setting, wearing jeans and a denim shirt with some buttons undone to the waist. These might be the images Philbin sent to the Sunday World newspaper as part of her entry to the Miss Movie Girl competition which she would later win in 1973. Philbin, age 20 from Galway, was a former Tyler’s Model Girl, and a Salthill Princess. As part of her prize, she represented the film festival, and Ireland, at national and international events including the Arnhem Film Festival in Holland where she appeared on Dutch television and spoke on the radio there. Tong, wearing a velvet jacket over a white shirt, appears to be at a bar, in front of an optic spirit dispenser for Powers Whiskey.  Born in 1951, Tong is known for her television, radio and stage work including Heart of the Country (BBC, 1986), Middlemarch (PBS, 1994), and The Politician’s Wife (PSB, 1996) as well as several appearances in Coronation Street. However she is probably best known for her role as Daisy Peel in the period television drama series Upstairs, Downstairs (1973-1975) for which she received an Emmy nomination in 1977 – a year before this picture was taken in 1978. Fellow dignitaries include festival director Robin O’Sullivan, in the centre of the back row, and representatives from Ford Motor Ireland who were the main sponsors for the festival that year.  Dan Wallace (1942-) was a former Fianna Fáil politician who served Cork for almost twenty-five years as a TD for the Cork North-Central constituency and as a Lord Mayor from 1985 to 1986. He once worked as a customs clerk with the Ford Motor Company in Cork and might have been familiar with the Ford representatives in this photo. Ford Motors, had a purpose-built factory on the Marina in Cork and once employed up to 7,000 workers. The factory closed in 1984, with the Ford Sierra being the last model produced. Richard Attenborough (1923-2014) was an English politician, actor, and award-winning filmmaker. He is the older brother of Sir David Attenborough. Richard Attenborough’s prolific filmography includes acting roles in The Great Escape (John Sturges, 1963), Loot (Silvio Narizzano, 1970), and Rosebud (1975) directed by Otto Preminger and starring Peter O’Toole – both of whom came to the Cork festival. Attenborough directed Gandhi (1982), Chaplin (1992), Shadowlands (1993), and his final film Closing the Ring in 2007. Around the time of this picture in 1985 he had just finished A Chorus Line (1985) and was working on the Academy-nominated epic film Cry Freedom (1987) which he directed and produced. Cry Freedom was nominated for three academy awards and won the Peace Film Award at the Berlin Festival that year. Attenborough was a member of the prestigious European Film Academy (EFA). Founded in 1989, with Ingmar Bergman as its first president, it seeks to advance the interests of the European film industry and to increase public awareness of European cinema. The EFA invited former festival director Mick Hannigan to join the academy in 2006. Hannigan took over as festival director from Robin O’Sullivan soon after this photo was taken in 1985. As a voting member of EFA Hannigan’s name joined a list that includes, along with Attenborough and Bergman, Pedro Almodóvar, Federico Fellini, and David Puttnam. In 2020 the chairman of the academy is the Irish producer, author, and journalist Mike Downey. He is seated second from left, in glasses and dickie bow, with hands clasped in front of him. The other guests in the picture are not identified apart from a provisional Father Cormac, cigarette in hand, on the far right. The group is seated around a small square table, laden with drink, and looking up at the camera smiling. Theodore ‘Ted’ Sorensen was a close aide to President John F Kennedy whose inaugural address for Kennedy called on the American people to “ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” In October 1962, Sorensen was involved with the growing missile crisis in Cuba when Kennedy asked him, and Bobby Kennedy, who was the Attorney General at the time, to draft a letter to the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev. This letter was critical in persuading the Soviets to withdraw their missiles from Cuba, potentially averting war between the superpowers. The back of the photo states that Sorensen was a future CIA director – he was indeed nominated by President Jimmy Carter in 1977 for the post of CIA director but the nomination was killed by conservative critics who cited, amongst other reasons, his youthful claim to have been a conscientious objector. He also worked with Barack Obama on his U.S. presidential campaign. An Irish-produced documentary film Here Was Cuba (Emer Reynolds, John Murray 2013) tells the story of the Cuban Missile Crisis through the central characters of Kennedy, Castro, and Khrushchev. Many interviews were shot during 2010 for research purposes, including with Ted Sorensen. He died soon after in New York, age 82, following a stroke. Here Was Cuba was nominated for a prestigious Grierson Award in the category of 'Best Historical Documentary' in 2014. Breen and Bellingham are facing the camera smiling, while Nicholas and Smith are in mid-conversation half-turned towards each other. The convivial group are at a drinks reception in London for the film festival. Hosted by the London Friends of Cork, and organised by Tom Nicholas, the London reception was a regular event, sometimes held at the iconic Martini Terrace at New Zealand House, and attended by celebrities and friends of the festival. Greg Smith (1939-2009), standing on the left wearing a light-coloured fitted jacket, was the producer behind a series of X-rated successful movies during the 1970s including Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). His collaborations with the Irish director Norman Cohen also include Spike Milligan’s war memoirs: Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (Norman Cohen, 1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977), starring Lynda Bellingham and Pamela Stephenson both of whom are in the archive. Born in London, Smith worked in theatre as a young boy before establishing a talent agency in London where he signed on the Irish filmmaker Cohen. With the relaxation of censorship laws in the UK, Smith and Cohen turned a series of risqué best-selling paperback books, by Christopher Wood, into a successful run of Confessions movies. Smith went on to produce Stand up, Virgin Soldiers, starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham who worked in many of his movies during this era. Lynda Bellingham (1948-2014) was an English actor, broadcaster, and author who was a familiar presence on British television, in particular for her work as lunchtime chat show host on Loose Women between 2007 and 2011, with whom she made more than 300 appearances. She also had a long-standing television career in such shows as All Creatures Great and Small and as the Inquisitor in the Doctor Who serial Trial of a Time Lord in 1986. Beyond her film work in the Smith and Cohen film productions, she worked in theatre, pantomime, radio, and TV commercials, in particular on the long-running 'Oxo Family' campaign.
