From the carpet and room décor, we guess that they are seated in the Lord Mayor’s Chambers at the City Hall which was built in 1936. The room is decorated with memorabilia, gifts, and artworks and in this image we can make out part of the carpet that bears the City’s coat of arms. The Lord Mayor, wearing his chain of office, sits at the centre with his wife on his right. Around them, guests pose for the picture and include Professor Piero Calì from UCC, who stands second from left in the back row. Professor Calì (-2008), was originally from Milan before moving to Cork where he was a Professor of Italian at the University. He founded the Cork branch of the Dante Alighieri Society in 1957, with his UCC colleague Ethna Byrne-Costigan (1904-1991). Formed in 1889, the Rome-based Dante Alighieri Society (Società Dante Alighieri) aims to promote an interest in the Italian language and culture with branches in more than 60 countries across the world. Robert Shaw, in a dress suit, looks up towards the camera smiling, his hand linked through Vida Breen’s arm. She is dressed in a flouncy white top over a long chevron-patterned skirt, and smiles as she steps forward towards the cinema. Behind her, we can just make out her husband, the festival director Dermot Breen with Robin O’Sullivan. A small crowd gathers around them accompanied by a photographer and a guard. Beyond them the traffic turns down towards Washington Street onto the Western Road. The Capitol Cinema was located at the junction of the Grand Parade and Washington Street. It opened in 1947 with the Bob Hope and Joan Caulfield comedy Monsieur Beaucaire (George Marshall, 1946). The cinema originally held over 1,300 patrons and at the time had one of the best operating systems in the country including a new magnetic sound system pioneered by 20th Century Fox. The sound from the speakers was so realistic that children ran out of the cinema crying when thunder broke out in the first showing of a film. It originally held a restaurant which was converted into a second screen in 1974, with seats for 105 patrons. Before long in 1989 it was converted into the city’s first multiplex with six screens. The new Capitol Cineplex was a popular cinema bringing movie blockbusters to the people of Cork until its closure in 2005 and conversion into a shopping and office block in 2017. The last film shown at the Cineplex was Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (Mike Newell, 2005) and The Constant Gardener (Fernando Meirelles, 2005). (John McSweeney, The Golden Age of Cork Cinemas, Rose Arch Publications, 2013.)  Robert Shaw (1927-1978) was an English actor, novelist and playwright. In 1961 he won the Hawthornden Prize, a British literary award established by the English philanthropist, Alice Warrender, for his second novel, The Sun Doctor. He had a successful television and stage career with productions on Stratford and Broadway including Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker (1961) with Donald Pleasance and Alan Bates which was reprised in the 1963 film The Caretaker directed by Clive Donner. His long list of films includes A Man for all Seasons (Fred Zinnemann, 1966) for which he was Oscar-nominated for his role as Henry VIII. Following this he went on to have a successful film career including The Sting (George Roy Hill, 1973) and Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975) with Roy Scheider. Robert Shaw had ten children. His son, the actor Ian Shaw, was to portray his father in a West End play, The Shark is Broken (2020), about the beleaguered Jaws shoot directed by Guy Masterson. His grandchild, Ferdia Shaw, starred as the lead role in the Disney adaptation of Eoin Colfer's Artemis Fowl (2020), directed by Kenneth Branagh and starring Judie Dench and Colin Farrell. At the time of this picture, dated 1976, Shaw had just starred in the British-American romance and adventure film Robin and Marian (Richard Lester, 1976) alongside Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn. The director of Robin and Marian, Richard Lester, was also a visitor to the Cork Film Festival in the seventies. Shaw had a home in Tourmakeady, County Mayo, and died close by his home from a heart attack in 1978, just two years after this picture was taken, age 51. Some of the other nine delegates are provisionally identified at the back of the photo as the Everyman Theatre founder, and Presentation Brothers College (PBC) teacher, Dan Donovan, Teddy O’Brien, festival director Dermot Breen, and Dorinda Coomber.  David Hemmings was an English actor, director, and producer who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer (which might have been based on David Bailey), in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). His filmography includes The Charge of the Light Brigade (Tony Richardson, 1968), Alfred the Great (Clive Donner, 1969) (which was filmed in Ireland), Juggernaut (Richard Lester, 1974), with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif, and the gangster movie The Squeeze (Michael Apted, 1977) with Stacy Keach and Edward Fox. Distracted by television roles and running his company, Hemdale Corporation, during the 1980s, his credits include Magnum PI, Airwolf, The A-Team, and Quantum Leap. By the 2000s his return to film was well-received and included the role of ‘Cassius’ in Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000), and the role of ‘Lenny’ in the poignant Last Orders (2001), alongside Tom Courtenay and Michael Caine, which was shown at the 46th edition of the Cork Film Festival in 2001. His role in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003), with Sean Connery, was one his final roles before his unexpected death in Romania in 2003, age 62, whilst filming the British-Romanian horror film Blessed (a.k.a.Samantha’s Child) (Simon Fellows, 2004) with Heather Graham and James Purefoy. We also note that he had a minor role in the film St Joan (1957), based on the George Bernard play, directed by Austrain-born director Otto Preminger, who came to the film festival with Jean Seberg in the late 1950s. They stand together and chat in the convivial setting of the Ashbourne House garden party. Nicholas, with a glass in hand, was a founding member of the London Friends of Cork and often hosted events at the Martini Terrace in London for the festival. The 1980 film festival programme notes that this group of London-based film people raised thousands of pounds to help the development of the festival. The photo is taken from the top of the steps in the marble foyer of the Savoy and looks down at the crowd milling below. The photo recognises the Lord Mayor in conversation with the festival director Dermot Breen, cigarette in hand. Small tables at the front of the stage display four glass whiskey decanters and the Waterford Crystal trophy. The guests are not identified but we recognise the Lord Mayor, Timothy J O’Sullivan, which helps us date this photo to his mayoralty in 1971. O’Sullivan is seated alongside festival director Dermot Breen on his left and committee member Gus Healy on his right. Healy was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976.
