The competition had various rounds including ‘evening attire’ and swimwear. We note the Harp Lager promotional material providing a backdrop for an improvised runway in what looks like a hotel function room. The fair-haired model, wearing a light-coloured chaste bathing suit worn over nylon tights, is gazing straight down towards the lens of the cameraman on her right. A crowd is gathered around the runway, some with bags in hand, and look on. While the idea of a Miss Movie Girl competition with a ‘bathing suit’ segment might bring a wry smile to our lips now it was very much in vogue during the 1970s, as we see with the Miss World pageant. Miss World originated in 1951, for the Festival of Britain, under the auspices of Eric and Julia Morley. During the 1960s and 1970s the pageant was one of the most-watched programmes on British television but fell out of favour as the decade progressed. Miss World still operates today, without that swimsuit segment, but is no longer televised in England or Ireland. A recent movie Misbehaviour (2020), directed by Philippa Lowthorpe, looks at the bizarre and somewhat extraordinary nature of the Miss World pageant in a light-hearted yet illuminating way – reminding us of how the women’s liberation movement of the 1970s made way for a narrative that continues to this day via #MeToo. Title A name given to the resource Theo Dorgan with a colleague and the 1986 festival programme Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Theo Dorgan Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the celebrated Cork-born poet Theo Dorgan, on the left in a leather jacket, with an unidentified companion. They are both looking down at the programme for the 31st Cork International Film Festival which took place in 1986 (and helps us date this photo). Dorgan had just taken over the film festival that year, along with Mick Hannigan, and this photo might be from the launch of that years’ festival. Dorgan’s name, together with Hannigan, is intrinsically tied up with the film festival in the mid-eighties and beyond. They took it on together in 1986 after the resignation of the then-director Robin O’Sullivan, who had gamely run it for some years following the unexpected death of festival founder Dermot Breen in 1978. Dorgan and Hannigan ran the festival together until 1989, when Dorgan moved on following his appointment as director of Poetry Ireland. Dorgan, a graduate of University College Cork - where he also taught - is a member of the Irish arts organisation Aosdána and was an appointee of the Arts Council from 2003 to 2008. While the photograph is not dated we might guess it was taken during the early tenure of his presidency in the fifties, during which time Patrick McGrath served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952-1955. De Valera stands on a podium in front of 31 South Mall in Cork, where the London Assurance Corporation 1720 had their Cork Branch. On-lookers look out from the office windows down at the events below. Above we can see the windows of the local accountancy firm Lantry & Co. Uniformed soldiers stand in rows in front of the podium, their right arm slightly raised at their hip bearing arms. De Valera is accompanied on his right by Lord Mayor, Patrick McGrath, and various dignitaries including Dermot Breen and the then president of University College Cork, Alfred O'Rahilly (1884-1969). The academic O'Rahilly (1884-1969) briefly served as a politician (1943-1954) but was best known for his presidency of the University College Cork from 1943 to 1954. A Sinn Féin supporter, O'Rahilly was interned in Spike Island prison in Cork in 1921 for his political writings. In his capacity as President of the University, he would work closely with the Trade Unions and initiated workers' education courses during the late 1940s. On the death of his wife in 1955, he became a priest, and later Monsignor, and would be awarded the Pontifical Order of Saint Gregory the Great by Pope Pius XII which is the highest distinction that can be awarded to a layman by the Catholic Church. The Irish Times noted that he was 'imperious and some considered him comical, but he silenced his detractors with outstanding intellect and scholarship' (06.10.1998). The same Irish Times article records that O'Rahilly contemplated a multi-volume life of Christ prompting his colleague Mgr Padraig de Bruin to observe that 'a life of O'Rahilly by Christ would be much more interesting.' A building at the university has been dedicated to him since 1998. It shows the English actor Mollie Peters, sitting with the festival director Dermot Breen. They are seated side-by-side at a dinner table and Peters, wearing an emerald green dress, is shown in profile looking towards Breen. Breen, in a dinner suit, is leaning on the table, holding a cigarette in his yellowed fingers, and is half-turned towards Peters. In front of them, we note the detritus of dinner, together with glasses of wine. Mollie (sometimes spelled 'Molly') Peters was the stage name of Vivien Mollie Rudderham, an English actor best known for her role as Nurse Patricia Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007 in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). She was famously the first Bond girl to take off her clothes on-screen, earning the franchise its first X-rating. Several scenes were cut at the request of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) for their risqué nature. Despite the success of Thunderball, Peters went on to have a short-lived film career, mainly due to contractual disagreements with her agent that forestalled her career.
