Always, Dawn Addams.  Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India, after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly 1952), and the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (1953) which was directed by Otto Preminger. Preminger also came to the festival and there is an image of them posing together in the archive. It shows Harvey, in a dark polo neck jumper, looking directly at the lens of the camera. The photo is signed and dedicated to the former festival director Dermot Breen: To Dermot Breen, with thanks & affectionate good wishes, Laurence Harvey. Harvey's extensive filmography includes The Manchurian Candidate (John Frankenheimer, 1962) with Frank Sinatra and Janet Leigh; Life at the Top (Ted Kotcheff, 1965); and narration for the Soviet film Tchaikovsky (Igor Talankin, 1969). Around the time of his visit to the Cork festival, Harvey starred in Escape to the Sun (Menahem Golan, 1972) and The Deep (Orson Welles, 1970) which was an unfinished film starring Harvey and Jeanne Moreau. When Harvey died in 1973 it ended any chance of the picture being finished. One of Harvey's final commitments was to film Cockatrice (1963), a satirical novel about filmmakers by Wolf Mankowitz, which was never made. Wolf Mankowitz was also a visitor to the festival during the 1960s and 1970s. Holm had a prolific filmography from the 1940s to the 1960s with films including Tiger of Bengal (Fritz Lang, 1959), Journey to the Lost City (Fritz Lang, 1960), and The Girl from the Marsh Croft (Gustav Ucicky, 1958) starring Eva Ingeborg Scholz which was shown at the 1959 festival on 30th September. The 1959 festival programme notes that the film was based on a novel by the Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf and deals with love, lust, and violence in a small Swedish town. Maxine Audley (born Violet Maxine Hecht) appeared in more than 20 films including an uncredited role in Anna Karenina (Julien Duvivier, 1948) starring Vivien Leigh, A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) with Charlie Chaplin and Dawn Addams, The Vikings (Richard Fleischer, 1958) with Kirk Douglas and Ernest Borgnine, and Peeping Tom (Michael Powell, 1960).
