The award was for the best film in the educational section for the Irish-spoken Fior Uisce (Water Wisdom), which was sponsored by the Department of Local Government. Narrated by Niall Tóibín, and filmed in Ring and Old Parish, Waterford, it was aimed at encouraging rural communities to provide themselves with piped water, at a time when four out of five homes relied on non-tapped water. Ruth Barton notes in her book, Irish National Cinema (Routledge, 2004:68), that Ó Laoghaire’s film was so close to Soviet filmmaking practices, both in style and temperament, the Soviet delegation at the 1962 Cork Film Festival expressed an interest in inviting Ó Laoghaire to the (then) USSR. As well as working for RTÉ, Ó Laoghaire also produced and directed Gael Linn cinema newsreels for many years. In addition to Fior Uisce, his filmography includes Tony Bacillus & Co (1946), a short silent film which used puppets to fight the tuberculosis germ, Irish Gossamer (1958), which was commissioned by the Irish Tourist Board to encourage visitors to Ireland, and Gaeltacht, a series of programmes looking at life in the Gaeltacht in the late 1960s. The photo has a note marked on the front in blue ink: First Cork International Film Festival, May 1956. Elliman, in a dark suit with his left hand in his pocket, was an Irish impresario who managed many of Ireland's cinema screens during the 1950s. He brought film production to Ireland opening the Ardmore Studios, with Emmet Dalton, in 1958. Elliman was involved with the early planning of the Cork Film Festival, advising and encouraging the festival founder Dermot Breen. The small group of six men pose for the camera smiling, on and around a staircase. While the men are unidentified we recognise Robin O’Sullivan and Gus Healy, second left on the staircase, from the archive. Healy was a Fianna Fáil politician who served Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. His presence in the festival archive goes as far back as the late 1950s when he appears in an image of the original Tóstal Council alongside the then Lord Mayor Patrick McGrath, and festival founder Dermot Breen. On Breen’s unexpected death in 1978 O’Sullivan, standing on the far right in this image in a dark suit and hand in pocket, took over and kept the festival going until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took up the cudgels in the mid-eighties. A partially dressed Peters is shown standing whilst looking over her left shoulder towards the camera. The photo is signed and dedicated to the former festival director Dermot Breen: To Dermot, Best Wishes, Luan Peters xx. Peters (1946-2017), born Carol Ann Hirsch, and also known as Karol Keyes, was known for her television appearances and the Hammer Horror films Lust for a Vampire (Jimmy Sangster, 1971) starring Suzanna Leigh, and Twins of Evil (John Hough, 1971) with Peter Cushing and Mary Collinson. Both Suzanna Leigh and Peter Cushing also came to Cork in the 1970s. Title A name given to the resource Signed photo of Garth Watkins Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Garth Watkins, Ann Michelle, Vicki Michelle Description An account of the resource This is a black and white signed publicity photo of the English actor Garth Watkins (1922-1980). Watkins, in a suit, is shown sitting with papers in hand, turned towards the camera. His work includes Special Branch (1969-1974), Twins of Evil (John Hough, 1971) and The Madness (James Jones, 1976). Around the time of this image he had starred in Virgin Witch (Ray Austin, 1971) starring Ann Michelle and Vicki Michelle both of whom came to the festival in the early 1970s. While filmed in 1970 and copyrighted in 1971 Virgin Witch was not seen until 1972 for censorship reasons. The photo is signed and dedicated to the former festival director Dermot Breen: To Dermot with best wishes, Garth Watkins, July 1972.
