Bernard 'Bunny' Carr (1927-2018) was a popular RTÉ television presenter during the 1960s and 1970s. He acted as a Chairman on some of the festival workshops such as the Writers Forum. The photo was formerly framed and marked with details of the small group on its front and includes, from left to right, the Canadian Ambassador, James Joachim McCardle, the Canadian film director and producer Roger Blais, festival director Dermot Breen and Lord Mayor Peter Barry. The formally dressed group are smiling for the camera and Blais and Breen appear to be exchanging a small memento. Behind them the crowded room is decorated with the harp lager logo and poster (‘Harp Sir!’) and, at the lower-left corner of the photo, a lady is inadvertently caught in the image looking down. Ireland has exchanged Ambassadors with Canada since 1949 when Ireland left the Commonwealth, and McCardle was the Canadian Ambassador to Ireland from 1968 to 1972. McCardle was no doubt at the festival accompanying the Canadian filmmaker Roger Blais (1917-2012) whose films include Royal Journey (David Bairstow, Gudrun Parker, Roger Blais, 1951) and Grierson (aka Monsieur John Grierson) (Roger Blais, 1972) both of which won the Canadian Film Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary. Grierson was a documentary film of the noted Scottish film and documentary maker John Grierson who founded the National Film Board of Canada (NFBC). Blais had a close relationship with Grierson who recruited him to the NFBC in 1945. Grierson was jury president of the Cork Film Festival in 1958 and an image of him, sitting with the Iranian-German film producer Vasgen Badal, Dermot Breen, and Donal Crosbie, can be viewed in the archive. Peter Barry (1928-2016), on the far right next to Dermot Breen, was a Cork-born Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1970 to 1971. He would go on to serve at eight successive elections including a stint as deputy leader under Garret Fitzgerald in 1979, Minister for the Environment from 1981 to 1982, and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1982 to 1983 until his retirement after the 1997 general election – giving up his seat to his daughter Deirdre Clune. However, it is as a tea-maker that many Corkonians remember Peter Barry and his family. 'Barry’s Tea' has around 40 percent of the Irish tea market with a loyal following in Cork and beyond. She was the only woman associated with the show and would appear in thirty of the forty-five Monty Python episodes as well as the Monty Python films Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones 1975), Monty Python's Life of Brian (Terry Jones, 1979) and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (Terry Jones, 1983). Terry Gilliam was also a visitor to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. Carol Cleveland was born in London in 1942 and lived in America for some years before returning to London to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 1960. They are shown facing each other whilst shaking hands. Breen is wearing a dinner jacket while Baker is dressed in a light-coloured organza gown decorated with a flower motif. Born in 1931, Carroll Baker is an Academy Award and BAFTA nominee for her career-defining role as ‘Baby Doll’ Meehan in the 1956 film Baby Doll directed by Elia Kazan and later Giant (George Stevens, 1956) acting with Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean. (The music for Giant was scored by Dimitri Tiomkin whose image is also in this archive.) She studied in the Actors Studio under Lee Strasberg who introduced her to the work of Kazan and the Tennessee Williams script. Yet despite her success in Hollywood, Baker had a difficult relationship with the studios, such as Warner and Paramount, and in particular with the producer Joseph Levine, whose contracts tied her to work for them whatever her wishes. She left Hollywood in the late 1960s and moved to Italy working in Italian thrillers and horror movies which allowed her to work outside the constraints of the Hollywood moral code as well as her probable blacklisting by the studios. At the time of this photograph, Baker had filmed the leading role in Corrado Farina’s horror film Baba Yaga (1973). The Italian director Farina was also at the festival and they might have been promoting Baba Yaga that year. Baker is the mother of Blanche Baker, with the director Jack Garfein. Born in 1957 Blanche Baker is a well-regarded actor and filmmaker winning an Emmy Award for her work in the television miniseries Holocaust (1978). She also starred in the title role of Edward Albee’s stage adaptation of Lolita on Broadway during 1981-2. They are both wearing black-tie suits with a festival ribbon pinned to their lapel. Maguire (1922-2009), standing on the left listening attentively to Breen, was a barrister, judge, EU official, and RTÉ music presenter for many years. The arts played a large part in his life and he was chairman of the Film Appeals Board from 1965 to 1973 contributing towards the liberalisation of film censorship in the Republic. The film historian, Kevin Rockett, notes that Maguire introduced film classification to Ireland, allowing for films with adult themes such as adultery or homosexuality to be shown in Ireland for the first time (The Irish Times, 17.01.2009). Hennessy, on the left, with a drink in hand, looks up somewhat forlornly to the camera. His companions, also holding drinks, pose for the camera in front of gilt-framed art work adorning the walls behind them. (This might be the same drinks reception attended by the poet John Montague in a similarly uncredited photo and can be viewed in the archive by clicking on Montague’s ‘tag’ below.) Charlie Hennessy, a senior partner of JW O’Donovan Solicitors on Cork’s South Mall, made a tremendous contribution to the Cork Film Festival. On his death in 2008, Mick Hannigan, the then festival director, noted that Hennessy’s contribution to the cultural life of Cork was immense. Along with Dermot Breen, Hennessy was involved with the film festival since its inception in 1956. He was its chairperson for twenty-one years from 1985 to 2005 and continued to work for the festival, and for the Cork Opera House, attending board meeting up until his death, age 77. Hennessy attended the Presentation Brothers College on the Mardyke, playing rugby for his school and University College Cork. As well as sport, and the film festival, his interest in the arts included involvement with the Presentation Theatre Guild, Cork Operatic Society, the Gilbert and Sullivan group and the Southern Theatre Group. Hennessy was a member of the Arts Council from 1998 to 1993. The formally dressed group, some with a glass in their hand, are chatting and oblivious to the camera while Tsai Chin, wearing an elaborately beaded jacket accessorised with an ornate necklace, faces the camera smiling. This is a unique film festival image, dated 1970s, of Tsai Chin. Chin is a Chinese actor born in 1933 and working to this day (2020). The daughter of Zhou Xinfang, a renowned master of the Peking Opera, she was the first Chinese student to study in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), the first Chinese actor to star in a West End show, and shored up the exotic quotient in movies such as Bond’s You Only Live Twice (Lewis Gilbert, 1967) and the Fu Manchu film franchise. In the 1960s she shot to fame when starring as 'Suzie,' the Hong Kong prostitute, in the 1959 West End play The World of Suzie Wong based on the book by Richard Mason; she would follow this with extensive work on stage, television, and screen including The Face of Fu Manchu (Don Sharp, 1965), The Virgin Soldiers (Leslie Thomas, 1966), The Joy Luck Club (Wayne Wang, 1993), Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 2006) and most recently the voice of ‘Nai Nai’ in the computer-animated adventure Abominable (Jill Culton, 2019). Wishing to break away from being typecast as an exotic ingénue she later took roles that challenged the stereotypes of Asian women on the screen. In 1988 Tsai Chin published her autobiography, Daughter of Shanghai, which recalls her early, and sometimes tragic, life including her early life in Shanghai, and her parents’ brutal deaths during the cultural revolution. It was a worldwide success and inspired the film of the same name, starring Tsai Chin, and directed by Michelle Chen Miao in 2019. Title A name given to the resource Closing Night with Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse in 1967 Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Pearse Wyse, Lord Mayor, St Finbarr Awards Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the closing night of the festival in 1967 and shows guests and dignitaries seated across the expanse of the City Hall stage. A small white table at the front of the stage displays four St Finbarr statuettes, together with a Waterford crystal award. Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse is seated just behind the table and is looking towards his right while clapping his hands. Born in Cork, Pearse Wyse (1928-2009) was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. A firm supporter of Jack Lynch he was a formidable opponent of Charles Haughey and was a member of the so-called 'Gang of 22'. Disillusioned with the Fianna Fáil party he went on to found the Progressive Democrats where he held a seat as a TD in the 1987 and 1989 elections. The photograph does not identify the guests but we note that the only woman on the stage of fourteen men is 'Miss Movie Girl 1967' who is seated next to the festival director Dermot Breen. We can make out Gus Healy sitting next to Breen. Healy was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. Title A name given to the resource Colm Ó Laoghaire accepting the St Finbarr statuette in 1962 Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Colm Ó Laoghaire, Colm O'Leary, St Finbarr Statuette, Award, RTÉ, Niall Tóibín, Séamus Murphy, Arthur Watkins Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Irish filmmaker Colm Ó Laoghaire accepting an award from Arthur Watkins, president of the International Federation of Film Producers Association. The award was for the best film in the educational section for the Irish-spoken Fior Uisce (Water Wisdom), which was sponsored by the Department of Local Government. Narrated by Niall Tóibín, and filmed in Ring and Old Parish, Waterford, it was aimed at encouraging rural communities to provide themselves with piped water, at a time when four out of five homes relied on non-tapped water. Ruth Barton notes in her book, Irish National Cinema (Routledge, 2004:68), that Ó Laoghaire’s film was so close to Soviet filmmaking practices, both in style and temperament, the Soviet delegation at the 1962 Cork Film Festival expressed an interest in inviting Ó Laoghaire to the (then) USSR. As well as working for RTÉ, Ó Laoghaire also produced and directed Gael Linn cinema newsreels for many years. In addition to Fior Uisce, his filmography includes Tony Bacillus & Co (1946), a short silent film which used puppets to fight the tuberculosis germ, Irish Gossamer (1958), which was commissioned by the Irish Tourist Board to encourage visitors to Ireland, and Gaeltacht, a series of programmes looking at life in the Gaeltacht in the late 1960s. Colm Ó Laoghaire died in Dublin in 2007.
