Maxine Audley (born Violet Maxine Hecht) appeared in more than 20 films including an uncredited role in Anna Karenina (Julien Duvivier, 1948) starring Vivien Leigh, A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) with Charlie Chaplin and Dawn Addams, The Vikings (Richard Fleischer, 1958) with Kirk Douglas and Ernest Borgnine, and Peeping Tom (Michael Powell, 1960). Around the time of this picture, dated 1972, she had acted her final film role in Running Scared directed by David Hemmings who was also at the festival that year. She is shown looking directly at the camera wide-eyed and lips parted. Addams (1930-1985) was very much a Hollywood star in the 1950s and her visit to Cork during this era was a highlight for the festival and the press. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much consternation. The request was shot down by the then manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet" (Independent, 09.11.2012). Her vivacious personality must have been a joy to capture by the photographers of the day as is evident from the many photos of her in the archive. A glamourous Addams is posing in an elaborate gown accessorised with large earrings that glint in the flash of the camera. The photo is signed in pen which is fading but has left an imprint on the image. While the script is difficult to decipher, it seems to read: To Dermot Breen and all the wonderful people of the Tostal […]. Always, Dawn Addams.  Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India, after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly 1952), and the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (1953) which was directed by Otto Preminger. Preminger also came to the festival and there is an image of them posing together in the archive. The photo was formerly framed and marked with details of the small group on its front and includes, from left to right, the Canadian Ambassador, James Joachim McCardle, the Canadian film director and producer Roger Blais, festival director Dermot Breen and Lord Mayor Peter Barry. The formally dressed group are smiling for the camera and Blais and Breen appear to be exchanging a small memento. Behind them the crowded room is decorated with the harp lager logo and poster (‘Harp Sir!’) and, at the lower-left corner of the photo, a lady is inadvertently caught in the image looking down. Ireland has exchanged Ambassadors with Canada since 1949 when Ireland left the Commonwealth, and McCardle was the Canadian Ambassador to Ireland from 1968 to 1972. McCardle was no doubt at the festival accompanying the Canadian filmmaker Roger Blais (1917-2012) whose films include Royal Journey (David Bairstow, Gudrun Parker, Roger Blais, 1951) and Grierson (aka Monsieur John Grierson) (Roger Blais, 1972) both of which won the Canadian Film Award for Best Feature-Length Documentary. Grierson was a documentary film of the noted Scottish film and documentary maker John Grierson who founded the National Film Board of Canada (NFBC). Blais had a close relationship with Grierson who recruited him to the NFBC in 1945. Grierson was jury president of the Cork Film Festival in 1958 and an image of him, sitting with the Iranian-German film producer Vasgen Badal, Dermot Breen, and Donal Crosbie, can be viewed in the archive. Peter Barry (1928-2016), on the far right next to Dermot Breen, was a Cork-born Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1970 to 1971. He would go on to serve at eight successive elections including a stint as deputy leader under Garret Fitzgerald in 1979, Minister for the Environment from 1981 to 1982, and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1982 to 1983 until his retirement after the 1997 general election – giving up his seat to his daughter Deirdre Clune. However, it is as a tea-maker that many Corkonians remember Peter Barry and his family. 'Barry’s Tea' has around 40 percent of the Irish tea market with a loyal following in Cork and beyond. The contact sheet comprises four strips, with nine images in total. The numbered images show three head and shoulder publicity shots each of Dorgan and Hannigan and three images of them standing together. We kept some examples of these contact sheets in the archive to show how photographers used positive prints from the negatives on a roll of film. This enabled the photographer to scan a series of thumbnail images to find the ‘keepers’ or the ones chosen to be enlarged. The photojournalist Henri Cartier-Bresson is famously known for analysing other photographers' contact sheets as a means of judging their work. We can see how the photographer explored their subject in the expanse of a single sheet. In our example, we appreciate the images of the now-celebrated poet Theo Dorgan, and the cineaste Mick Hannigan who worked for the Cork International Film Festival for 27 years and now runs the <a href="https://indiecork.com/">IndieCork Film Festival</a>. The sheet, annotated with a red marker, shows various award presentations, recipients, and awards. We recognise Lord Mayor Sean O’Leary (1941-2006) which helps us date this image to 1972 or 1973. We kept some examples of these contact sheets in the archive to show how photographers used positive prints from the negatives on a roll of film. This enabled the photographer to scan a series of thumbnail images to find the ‘keepers’ or the ones chosen to be enlarged. Sometimes the outtakes tell a story as much as the final chosen image.
