The Lord Mayor, wearing the chain of office, is turned towards Geary, in a three-piece tweed suit, holding what seems to be a programme or image for the festival-commissioned Mass of Saint Finbarr. The 1973 film festival programme notes that Geary composed and conducted the Mass of Saint Finbarr that year. The mass was first performed at the Church of St. Francis, in Cork, with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film International Children’s Choir. Owens, standing in the middle of this photo looking towards the Mayor, was a well-known radio performer with radio programmes including Melody from Munster, Songs of the Night, and Music of the Nation. He worked with Bernard Geary and gained success with his solo performance in Geary’s Mass of Saint Finbarr on the Aisling record label. We recognise the filmmaker John Boorman standing at the far left in a cheque jacket. He stands alongside the Irish director Norman Cohen, in a dark jacket and short beard. Cohen was a familiar presence at the festival in the seventies, along with Lynda Bellingham and Linda Hayden who starred in his risqué comedies including Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Cohen, 1977) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Cohen, 1977). The 1974 film festival programme notes that Boorman and Cohen were both members of the International Jury for the Feature Films Competition that year which helps us date this photo. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the far right of the photo. Smith was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). He published his memoir Off Screen (Gill and MacMillan) in 2007. Hickey stands on the right of the photo in a check shirt. While Hickey is best known for playing the part of 'Benji Riordan' in the long-running Irish series The Riordans (RTÉ), his film and stage work is extensive. His credits include My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989), Breakfast on Pluto (Neil Jordan, 2005), and What Richard Did (Lenny Abrahamson, 2012). In 2017 he starred in an award-winning documentary Feats of Modest Valour (Mia Mullarkey and Alice McDowell, 2017) about people living with Parkinson’s Disease which won a New York film festival award that year. Hickey passed away in May 2021 with tributes paid by President Michael D. Higgins. They are both wearing black-tie suits with a festival ribbon pinned to their lapel. Maguire (1922-2009), standing on the left listening attentively to Breen, was a barrister, judge, EU official, and RTÉ music presenter for many years. The arts played a large part in his life and he was chairman of the Film Appeals Board from 1965 to 1973 contributing towards the liberalisation of film censorship in the Republic. The film historian, Kevin Rockett, notes that Maguire introduced film classification to Ireland, allowing for films with adult themes such as adultery or homosexuality to be shown in Ireland for the first time (The Irish Times, 17.01.2009). We recognise some of the group to include festival committee members Dermot Breen and Gus Healy. We also identify the mustachioed British actor Simon Williams, and Jean Alexandria, who was a well-known British television actor during the 1970s. The Irish comedian and actor Niall Tóibín is noted in the middle of the group. Tóibín was born in Cork in 1929, on the northside of the City. He would go on to have an illustrious stage and film career including parts in Ryan’s Daughter (David Lean, 1970), Far And Away (Ron Howard, 1992), and Veronica Guerin (Joel Schumacher, 2003). The group of four suited men are mid-conversation; Lynch is glancing towards Breen who is looking directly at the lens of the camera. Jack Lynch (1917-1999) was born in Shandon, Cork, and went to school in the North Mon. By all accounts Lynch was a great sportsman and would credit sport with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. Lynch worked as parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera and succeeded Sean Lemass in 1966. He helped Ireland to usher in full membership of the European Economic Community whose application had been on the EEC table since 1961. Lynch was the Leader of Fianna Fáil from 1966 to 1979 and the Leader of the Opposition from 1973 to 1977. He would serve Ireland as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. In Cork, we have named a tunnel that runs under the River Lee after Jack Lynch. The Jack Lynch Tunnel opened in 1999 and eases traffic congestion in the City by diverting traffic under the River, via an immersed tube tunnel, connecting motorways North, West, and East. To the right of the purple stripe, there is an image of a young man caught mid-flight in dance on an orange background; he is wearing an embellished Georgian tunic and ballet slippers and is shown arched back with his arms stretched behind him. The dancer is more than likely the actor Levan Gelbakhiani from the Georgian film And Then We Danced (Levan Akin, 2020) which was shown at the festival that year. The festival logo of a three-masted sailing ship sits at the top right of the poster next to the number 64 which is the edition of the 2019 festival. Festival sponsors are detailed at the bottom of the poster along a white strip. The bind is stapled and it has 56 numbered pages. The pdf of the 1985 programme opens with a tribute to Sir Richard Attenborough and a selection of his films were shown that year. The programme also notes that a special feature of the 1985 festival was the number of films made by women; the list includes Broken Mirrors (Marleen Gorris, 1984), Da Capo (Pirjo Honkasalo and Pekka Lehto, 1985), Dust (Marion Hansel, 1985), Fran (Glenda Hambly, 1985), Paperbird (Anja Breien, 1984), A Singular Woman (Gillian Coote, 1985), and Eugene O’Neil: A Glory of Ghosts (Perry Miller Adato, 1985). A seminar on Women and Film was held that October, organised by Pat Murphy, Trish McAdam and Jane Gogan. The close of the programme acknowledges the sponsorship of Ford of Ireland which allowed the festival to mount its tribute to Sir Richard Attenborough that year. It reads Sorry but impossible accept your king [sic] invitation because work regards Sophia Loren. The post office stamp date is Corcaigh 11.V.56. Sophia Loren’s actual link with the film festival is one of association rather than presence. Sophia Loren came to the archive, in 1956, at the behest of Mr Dermot Breen, the original organiser of the festival. We might guess that he invited Loren to the first Cork Film Festival in early 1956 – an invitation that she politely declined by this telegram in May of that year. The short truncated text was typical of this medium which charged according to the word count. Seemingly Oscar Wilde sent the shortest telegram in history to his publisher when asking about how his book was doing the message read “?”. The publisher replied with “!”. In the pre-internet age telegrams were a thriving form of communication and transatlantic messages were sent via cable from Valentia Island in Kerry. However with the advent of technology they are no longer in use in Ireland and the final telegram was sent in 1977. We note also that Loren was awarded, in absentia, the Waterford Glass Trophy for outstanding acting performance at the 1961 Cork Film Festival. This was for the Vittorio De Sica movie, Two Women (La Ciociara) (1960) which was shown at the Cork Film Festival on the 4th October 1961. The film won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Loren. This was the first time an acting Oscar had been given for a non-English-speaking performance. She also won the award for Best Actress at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival that year.
