The photo has a note marked on the front in blue ink: First Cork International Film Festival, May 1956. Elliman, in a dark suit with his left hand in his pocket, was an Irish impresario who managed many of Ireland's cinema screens during the 1950s. He brought film production to Ireland opening the Ardmore Studios, with Emmet Dalton, in 1958. Elliman was involved with the early planning of the Cork Film Festival, advising and encouraging the festival founder Dermot Breen. The website louiselliman.com notes that he was a regular at the festival during the remaining 11 years of his life and, on its 10th anniversary, his name was included in a select list of international patrons. The award was for the best film in the educational section for the Irish-spoken Fior Uisce (Water Wisdom), which was sponsored by the Department of Local Government. Narrated by Niall Tóibín, and filmed in Ring and Old Parish, Waterford, it was aimed at encouraging rural communities to provide themselves with piped water, at a time when four out of five homes relied on non-tapped water. Ruth Barton notes in her book, Irish National Cinema (Routledge, 2004:68), that Ó Laoghaire’s film was so close to Soviet filmmaking practices, both in style and temperament, the Soviet delegation at the 1962 Cork Film Festival expressed an interest in inviting Ó Laoghaire to the (then) USSR. As well as working for RTÉ, Ó Laoghaire also produced and directed Gael Linn cinema newsreels for many years. In addition to Fior Uisce, his filmography includes Tony Bacillus & Co (1946), a short silent film which used puppets to fight the tuberculosis germ, Irish Gossamer (1958), which was commissioned by the Irish Tourist Board to encourage visitors to Ireland, and Gaeltacht, a series of programmes looking at life in the Gaeltacht in the late 1960s. The uncredited photo was taken in Hollywood, USA, and was found among the archive papers. We note that a tribute programme of Stanely Kramer's work was introduced by Professor Robert Gessner at the Cork festival in 1966. Gessner chose six of Kramer's films for the festival and wrote an article for that year's programme. Kramer (1913-2001) was a renowned Oscar-winning film director and producer. In general, he made films that tried to address social issues such as racism, greed, and war. Kramer has an extensive filmography which includes The Defiant Ones (1958), Inherit the Wind (1960), Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) and the comedy film It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963) starring Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney. In this picture, Kramer is being presented the award by Katherine Hepburn (1907-2003) who had just finished Kramer’s Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner (1967) with Sidney Poitier and a frail Spencer Tracy, her partner of 26 years who would die soon after the film was made. Kramer also directed the German actor Heinz Rühmann in Ship of Fools (1965) starring Vivien Leigh in her final screen role. Rühmann came to the Cork festival and a couple of undated images of him can be seen in the festival archive. Since 2002 the Producers Guild of America awards the Stanley Kramer Award for films that "illuminate provocative social issues." In 2002 it was awarded to In America (2002) directed by the Irish playwright and director Jim Sheridan. The photo is undated but we can put it at 1976 or 1977 during the mayoralty of French. While the winner of the award, wearing a long white dress, is currently unidentified, we can just about recognise the face of the English actor, David Hemmings, on the far right. Seán French, served as Lord Mayor of Cork, from 1976 to 1977. He represented Cork in Dáil Éireann for 15 years and was a trusted confidante of former Taoiseach Jack Lynch; French ran alongside Lynch in the 1969 and 1973 general elections and would benefit from the large transfers from Lynch who had a huge surplus of votes. His father, also called Seán French, also served as both a Fianna Fáil TD and a Lord Mayor of Cork serving seven terms until his early death, age 47, in 1937. In addition to his political duties Seán French sat on the board of Glen Rovers and the Cork County Basketball Board were he was treasurer and at his funeral Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, noted that French had made an enormous contribution to public life in Cork. Title A name given to the resource St Finbarr statuette Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, St Finbarr Statuette, Award, Trophy, Seamus Murphy Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the St Finbarr statuette that was designed by the Cork-born sculptor Seamus Murphy. The award itself is 31cm high including the base. The inscription across the base reads Cork International Film Festival Trophy by Seamus Murphy RHA. The award has inscriptions on its base of a Celtic harp and the Cork coat of arms. Later awards - molded from the original template - have the same inscriptions accompanied by the year of the festival. The sculptor Seamus Murphy was based at his studio on Watercourse Road in Blackpool, Cork. Murphy was inspired by the politician, writer, and academic Daniel Corkery, then a teacher at his school, to attend the Cork Crawford School of Art. After receiving a scholarship, Murphy later went to Paris to study under the Irish-American Sculptor Andrew O’Connor before returning to Cork and opening up his studio. Murphy was commissioned to design the Church of the Annunciation in Blackpool, Cork, as well several unique carvings around the City and beyond. Seventy-five examples of his monuments can be seen in the cemetery of St Finn Barre’s Cathedral especially in ‘Musicians’ Corner’. A favourite City monument is his limestone drinking trough for dogs – marked Madraí; it is tucked away at the top of Patrick’s Street under a now empty shopfront at number 121. Fraser, wearing a light-coloured evening coat with fur-trimmed lapels,  smiles broadly at the camera while pointing to the view over Trafalgar Square and beyond. Born Elizabeth Winch (1930-2018), and known professionally as Liz Fraser, she was well-known for her comedy film roles and extensive television appearances. Fraser worked with Peter Sellers in a number of films including The Smallest Show on Earth (Basil Dearden, 1957), I’m All Right Jack (John Boulting, 1959), and Two-Way Stretch (Robert Day, 1960). However she will be remembered for her typecast appearances, as a blonde bombshell, in the Carry On series of films including Carry On Regardless (Gerald Thomas, 1961), Carry On Cabby (Gerald Thomas, 1963) and Carry On Behind (Gerald Thomas, 1975) which was made around the time this picture was taken. Fraser also appeared in films by the Irish director Norman Cohen including Dad’s Army (1971) and Confessions of a Driving Instructor (1976) starring Lynda Bellingham who also came to the festival. Fraser worked up until her death in 2018, age 88, in a year that saw her appear in the latest series of Midsomer Murders (2018) as well as an appearance at the Museum of Comedy in conversation with the British comedy historian Robert Ross.
