She had an illustrious and somewhat controversial relationship with the film festival. Due in part she admitted years later to the advice of her publicist advising her to court publicity. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much commotion in the press; it was shot down by the manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet" (Independent, 09.11.2012). Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India, after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly 1952), and the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (1953) which was directed by Otto Preminger. Otto Preminger (1905-1986) was born in Austria-Hungary but fled to Austria with his family after the breakout of the first World War. He went on to work for Fox in Los Angeles and was known for defying the censorship code of Hollywood with his controversial films. He directed Dawn Addams in the American romantic comedy The Moon is Blue (1953) which was nominated for three Oscars. It incurred the wrath of the American censors for its 'light and gay treatment of the subject of illicit sex and seduction'. Preminger and United Artists contested the State Censor Board who were overturned in court and the success of the film was instrumental in diminishing the power of the Hollywood Production Code. Wearing a light-coloured summer dress, with white kitten-heeled slip-on shoes, she rests her right hand on the chained pillar of the wooden walkway, and poses for the camera, laughing. Behind her we see the imposing limestone façade of the City Hall which is located on Albert Quay in Cork. It was rebuilt in the 1930s following its burning down by the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries, during the 'Burning of Cork' in December 1920. Above Markus we see two unidentified flags on the City Hall fluttering in the wind. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love directed by the Austrian Gustav Ucicky (1899-1961). Ucicky was probably a child of the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt; throughout his life Ucicky collected the works of his father which were later donated to the Klimt Foundation by his children. Laage is seated and smiling up at Neary as she takes her glass from him. She is wearing a light-coloured dress accessorised with a wide strap braclet, while Neary is in a dark suit and tie with a pin attached to the left lapel. Laage was a popular leading lady in French film during the 1950s. Notably, the Rita Hayworth role in The Lady from Shanghai (Orson Welles, 1947) was originally written for Barbara Laage.
