Tóstal was a pageant held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image through song, dance, and film. It was inaugurated in Cork in 1953, during which time Breen was on the Tóstal committee before he went on to found the film festival in 1956, running it until his death in 1978. The poster has an image of a ballet dancer which references the Cork Ballet Company founded by Joan Denise Moriarty in 1947. The ballet gave its first performance in June 1947 at the Cork Opera house under the baton of Aloys Fleischmann and the Cork Symphony Orchestra. The stage scenery was by Marshall Huston and Frank Sanquest whose image also features in the festival archive. The pictorial reference to film on the left of the picture, with a ribbon of film negative topped with Shandon Tower, helps us date this picture to at least the late-fifties when Breen founded the film festival. A large crowd, held back by young men in white slacks and shirts, are gathered in front of the City Hall to watch the Lord Mayor and colleagues raise the flag, which flutters in the wind above their heads. The Cork Film Festival emerged from the tourist festival An Tóstal (1953-1958), a pageant held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image and whose self-stated primary object was to increase its tourist industry and ‘appreciate the beauties of our own land’. While this photo does not identify the dignitaries in this picture we recognise the back of Lord Mayor Patrick McGrath at the flag; he served as Lord Mayor from 1952-1955 which helps us date this picture to his mayoralty. Behind him, on the marble steps of the City Hall, we recognise the low stature of the Cork Fianna Fáil politician Gus Healy who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. The all-male symphony orchestra is not identified but we note that they are all standing, as is the audience, and they might be playing the National Anthem at the end of the concert. The photo notes that this photo was taken during the ‘Tóstal era’ so we might date it to the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork in 1953. Tóstal was a festival held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image and lift the country from a period of economic depression. Music was very much a part of this rebranding with the establishment of the Cork Choral Festival in 1954 spearheaded by Aloys Fleischmann (1910-1992) who founded the Cork Symphony Orchestra in 1934. Fleischmann was a member of the Cork Tóstal Council from 1952 to 1954, and would go on to be the director of the Cork International Choral Festival from 1967 to 1987. The photo is undated but we can suggest the mid-fifties when Tóstal was inaugurated in Cork. The Cork Film Festival emerged from An Tóstal (1953-1958), which was a pageant, or festival, held around Ireland to celebrate Ireland’s national image. While this photo does not identify the ten council members we do recognise some of their faces from the archive. A young Dermot Breen stands in the middle at the back – he went on to found the film festival in 1956 and would run it until his death in 1978. Gus Healy (1904-1987) stands on the far left, hands in pocket. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. A grey-haired Patrick ‘Pa’ McGrath stands at the centre of the group. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who represented Cork in Dáil Éireann between 1946 and 1956. McGrath served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952 to 1956. He took an active part in the Irish War of Independence and was honoured by his comrades by appointing him chairman of the Cork City Old IRA Men’s Association. McGrath died suddenly in 1956 and was honoured by Taoiseach John A Costello in the Dáil, who spoke highly of him in the Dáil Éireann debate that June. Title A name given to the resource John Warrington and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, John Warrington, BBC, Dermot Breen Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English director and producer John Warrington with festival director Dermot Breen. The two are shown in conversation and an animated Warrington, wearing a belted mackintosh-style jacket, has his hand raised as he makes his point. While Breen, cigarette in mouth and pen in hand, looks up to Warrington as he speaks. John Warrington (1916-1998) was a BBC producer and director known for The Sky Larks (1958), The Men from Room 13 (1959) and Silent Evidence (1962). He was a producer for the BBC series The Grove Family (1957-1957) which was created by Roland Pertwee and Michael Pertwee, who also came to the film festival during the 1970s. Much-loved, in its day, The Grove Family, named after the BBC Lime Grove Studios, is generally regarded as the first British TV soap opera. We note that Dermot Breen died soon after this photo, dated 1978, was taken. Title A name given to the resource Miss Movie Girl Betty Philbin Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Miss Movie Girl, Betty Philbin Description An account of the resource This is a black and white two-image photo of Miss Movie Girl Betty Philbin. She is posing for the camera in a garden setting, wearing jeans and a denim shirt with some buttons undone to the waist. These might be the images Philbin sent to the Sunday World newspaper as part of her entry to the Miss Movie Girl competition which she would later win in 1973. Philbin, age 20 from Galway, was a former Tyler’s Model Girl, and a Salthill Princess. As part of her prize, she represented the film festival, and Ireland, at national and international events including the Arnhem Film Festival in Holland where she appeared on Dutch television and spoke on the radio there.
