The photo is marked '1980s' coinciding with Hannigan’s stewardship of the festival. He stands on the right of the photo, glass in hand, smiling broadly at the camera. Nesbitt, leaning forward with his hand on the shoulder of a beaming child, and his companion in a light-coloured dress, also smile for the camera. Behind them, artwork adorns the walls of the unidentified location. Hannigan worked for the festival for 27 years until leaving in 2013. He previously worked with the poet Theo Dorgan at the Triskel Arts Centre in the early eighties before they took up the cudgels of the film festival. Together they were a formidable team and consolidated the work of the festival bringing short and independent films to big venues such as the Cork Opera House. Hannigan later opened the first art-house cinema in Cork – The Kino – based on Washington Street at the top of the Western Road in 1996. It shut down in 2009 but for many years ran both popular and art-house films and, in conjunction with the Cork Film Festival, brought retrospective and cultural films to Cork. Hannigan now runs the <a href="https://indiecork.com/">IndieCork Film Festival</a> with Úna Feely, who was a programmer for the Cork Film Festival from 2001 until her departure in 2013. The pews are full and at the back of the Church, by the stained glass doors, we can just about make out the crowds standing by the open doors of the Church. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. St Francis Church is a Byzantine-style red-brick church and friary founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork City Courthouse and partially stands on the site of the old Broad Lane Church. Whilst typical in style for 1950s Ireland it retains notable interior fittings that distinguish it, such as its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light, and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Umberto Noni. When it was being built in 1954 workmen found part of the old city wall of Cork and an inscribed stone dated '1586' which is now part of the wall of the friary. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr mass. His head is lowered as he attends to the signing, his distinctive dark hair swept to the right with sideburns framing his lowered face. A few children look towards the camera and catch its attention. Bernard Geary (1934-) is a Cork musician, composer, and teacher, born in Gurranabraher where his parents ran a grocery shop. He studied music at the University College Cork during the 1950s and was encouraged in his compositions by Professor Aloys Fleischmann. His early compositions include work for the RTÉ String Quartet (String Quartet No.1, 1960), the Cork Symphony Orchestra (Provocation, 1960), and the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra (Amran Dochais, 1963) as well as vocal and choral works and incidental music for radio. Geary composed a nine-movement Mass of Saint Finbarr for tenor, choir, and organ in 1973 which was first performed at the Church of St. Francis in Cork with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film Festival Choir. It was commissioned by the Cork Film Festival and we might imagine that this photo is probably taken after the premiere of the Mass in June of that year. Given this, while this photo is marked ‘1970s’ we might pin its date down to 1973 or 1974 when he also conducted his mass for the festival. In 1975 Geary conducted the Mass of Saint Patrick which was composed by Philip Green. Geary was commissioned to compose Celebration of Cork for the opening of Cork 800 in 1985 which marked the anniversary of the founding of the city. The work was based on texts drawn from various writings including Edmund Spenser, Seán Ó Faoláin, and the Cork poet Father Prout (Francis Sylvester O’Mahony) and was revived for the Cork Choral Festival in 2018 (David Wright, wrightmusic.net; Cathy Desmond, Cork Examiner, 17.04.2018). The panel is part of a 1970 symposium for the Cork Film Festival. The five panellists are sitting in a semi-circle on the stage in front of long-armed microphones, and include an unidentified priest on the far right sitting next to Long. Jugs of water and ashtrays are placed on the wooden tables in front of them and they all appear to be listening attentively to a speaker off-camera. Bunny Carr is sitting on the far left, hands folded at his chin, looking to his left across the stage. Born in Dublin, Bernard ‘Bunny’ Carr (1927-2018) was a popular RTÉ television presenter during the 1960s and 1970s. He also founded Carr Communications which is said to have trained six of Ireland’s Taoisigh (prime ministers). However it is as a television host of popular television shows that he is fondly remembered including, Teen Talk, The Politicians, Going Strong, and most famously the quizmaster of Quicksilver, where he was accompanied by the musical cues of organist Norman Metcalfe, which made its debut in 1965. (‘Bunny the man who stopped the lights – then showed politicians how to deal with life in spotlight’, Irish Times, 21.09.2018.)  Wolf Mankowitz (1924-1998), sitting on the right in this picture wearing a white shirt, with a cigarette in hand, was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays and screenplays. He was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. Mankowitz was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson, starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson and Harry Towb (who also appears in this archive). Set in Cork in 1921, during the War of Independence, it is about the friendship between an IRA man escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. He wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street and it was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Interestingly the Guardian newspaper reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.) Title A name given to the resource French film director François Truffaut with Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, François Truffaut, Dermot Breen Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the French film director François Truffaut and the festival director Dermot Breen at the Harp-sponsored festival club. They are standing close together in conversation. Breen is wearing a festival ribbon marked 'director' and his glasses poke out of his breast pocket. Truffaut, cigarette in hand, is smiling as he talks to Breen. Behind them, the logo for Harp Lager can be seen adorning the umbrellas which are dotted around the outdoor space. Truffaut’s visit to Cork must have been a great coup for the festival. At the time he was one of the foremost film directors in the world with a career that spanned forty years of filmmaking before his untimely death in 1984, age 52. Around the time of this photograph, Truffaut had released Day for Night (1973) which won him an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It was the film that instigated a bitter rivalry between himself and the French director Jean-Luc Godard for its apparent attack on the commercial nature of Godard’s Le Mépris (Contempt), (1963). Interestingly Truffaut’s colleague, the cinematographer Raoul Coutard, and French New Wave stalwart, worked with the director and Guardian journalist, Peter Lennon, to make the documentary Rocky Road to Dublin in 1967. The documentary looked at the modern state of Ireland and in particular its relationship with the Catholic Church. It was banned in Ireland and the Cork Film Festival refused to show it initially but, following its acceptance by the Cannes Film Festival in 1969, Cork was somewhat embarrassed into showing it the following year (albeit in a lunchtime slot which was badly attended due to the festival organizing a free lunch for delegates at the same time in Kinsale – some distance away). Its success, amongst the French Left in particular, caught the attention of international media and it remains an example of French New Wave’s informality via the work of Coutard who was famous for shooting with a handheld camera. Raoul Coutard also worked extensively with Jean-Luc Goddard and Jacques Demy; he died in Paris, age 92, in 2016. (Erica Eisen, ‘What do you do with your revolution? They appear to be at a drinks reception which, as we know from a similar item in the archive, was also attended by fellow English actors Shane Briant, Virginia Wetherell and Vicki Coomber. Thomsett, on the far left with a liqueur glass in hand, looks on as the others chat. Born in 1950 she would have been around 22 years old in this picture. She had just finished the film Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971) starring Dustin Hoffman, but was best known for her role, playing the part of a young girl, in the British drama film The Railway Children (1970) written and directed by Lionel Jeffries. The characters are facing each other but looking upwards to the blue sky with their mouths open. Blue light is projected from their gaping mouths to the sky and intersects at the centre of the picture.
