Both are in formal wear and Badal looks on, vaguely distracted, while Norma Crosbie, dressed in a white lace dress, leans in to kiss him. The photo is dated 1958 and we note from the 1959 Festival of Cork Programme that Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr that year by Jack Lynch, TD, for the documentary Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958). Badal was an Iranian-born film producer and distributor who moved to Germany as a young man where he learnt about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion.' He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive. They are outdoors, possibly on a boat, standing side-by-side wearing heavy coats. Both are looking directly at the camera; Guinness is wearing a dark-coloured coat and a flat hat with his hands folded in front of him carrying a pair of light-coloured gloves. Breen, in a tweed coat, has his hands in his pockets. In the distance we see the silhouette of tall chimney stacks on the horizon. Sir Alec Guinness (1914-2000) featured in many Ealing Comedies including Kind Heart and Coronets (Robert Hamer, 1949) where he played nine characters. His collaborations with the film director David Lean include Fagin in Oliver Twist (1948) and opposite William Holden in The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He has made many television appearances including the role of George Smiley in the serialisation of two novels by John le Carré, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and Smiley's People (1982). Most notably he is remembered for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in George Lucas' original Star Wars Trilogy for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1959 for his services to the arts. The foliage is made up of film reel strips in various colours of green interspaced with brighter pinks and purples. Film spills out of transparent film reels in the background. The silhouette of a hummingbird is airborne at the centre of the image with two smaller birds perched on film-reel on either side. The gold and black text of the programme is at the head and foot of the cover. The back cover is an advertisement for Corona Extra beer who were the main sponsors of the festival that year. The image of an ice-cold bottle of Corona Extra beer – with a wedge of lime inserted in the neck – dominates the length of the blue-coloured page. Transparent film reel is wrapped around the gold beer-filled bottle in a loose circular fashion. Advertising text is placed in gold, white and yellow font at the right of the bottle. The festival programme is a soft glue-bound programme measuring 21cm x 29.5cm with 136 numbered pages. Notes: Time Passes ... Le Grice is interested in experimental images in the digital age. The image on the cover is from his 60-minute colour video The Cyclops Cycle and 'moves from the mythic to the domain of the domestic' (p.47 of the programme). The picture on the cover is a still from the video; the central image, from the nine images within the rectangle of images, is of an eye and the remaining eight images reference the eye in either shape or suggestion. The back cover is white, with minimal text at the foot of the programme. There is a small image at the upper part of the programme that depicts a person in white shorts breaking through a window or glass door out into the void. Their arms are raised in front of their face as they leap forward, from their blue-drenched background, as if a swimming pool, out into the white space before them.
