Title A name given to the resource Dermot Breen, Donal Crosbie, John Grierson and Vasgen Badal Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Donal Crosbie, John Grierson, Vasgen Badal Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo, marked 1958, of Dermot Breen, Donal Crosbie, John Grierson and the Iranian-German film producer Vasgen Badal sitting together at a table in conversation. The festival director Dermot Breen, with his back to us, is leaning on the table with his right arm, listening to Crosbie and Badal. Grierson, with his distinctive dark-framed glasses, sits at the rear of the group drawing deeply on his cigarette. They are all wearing festival pins on the left lapels of their jackets and have papers strewn on the table before them, along with empty glasses and an ash-filled ashtray. Vasgen Badal was born in 1891, in Tehran, and little is known about him. He was based in Germany and produced a series of films starring popular screen stars including Magda Schneider and Heinz Rühmann who also came to the Cork Film Festival. In 1958 Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr by Jack Lynch for the film Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958) under his film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion'. He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive.  John Grierson was a Scottish documentary maker who coined the term 'documentary' in a review of Robert Flaherty's Moana (1926). Grierson founded the National Film Board of Canada (NFBC) in 1939 and worked there until his resignation in 1945. He lectured at Carleton and McGill University and his lectures at McGill University would attract up to seven hundred students for his classes. In his time Grierson sat on many film festival juries including Cannes, Venice, and Oberhausen; he was jury president in Cork in 1958 when this picture was taken. Grierson died in 1972 and was cremated and his urn, along with that of his brother who had died the previous year, was placed in the sea off the Old Head in Kinsale, County Cork. The now-prestigious Grierson Award, set up in 1972 by the Grierson Trust and UK Film Council, commemorate his life and contribution to documentary film and is awarded annually. A bearded Cyril Cusack stands on the left, arms folded, in mid-conversation while both Eamon Andrews, at the centre, and Dermot Breen smile for the camera. Cyril Cusack (1910-1993), and his daughter Sinéad, were both visitors to the festival. Born in South Africa, to an English mother and Irish father, Cusack ended up in Ireland when his parents separated. He joined the Abbey Theatre in 1932 with whom he acted almost sixty plays before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1962. In the meantime he had established a successful film career and has an extensive filmography including The Rising of the Moon (John Ford, 1957), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (Martin Ritt, 1965), The Day of the Jackal (Fred Zinnemann, 1973), and as Michil, in the first Irish language film Poitín (Bob Quinn, 1978) starring Cusack along with Donal McCann, Niall Tóibín, and Mick Lally. This photo is marked 1959 and Cusack had filmed Shake Hands with the Devil (Michael Anderson, 1959) that year. His last stage performance was in Chekhov's Three Sisters (1990) in which his three daughters, Sinéad, Sorcha, and Niamh also acted.  Dublin-born Eamon Andrews (1922-1987) was a well-known Irish radio and television presenter who worked primarily in England. He chaired the Radio Éireann Authority (now the RTÉ Authority) from 1960 overseeing the introduction of state television in Ireland. However he relinquished the role in 1964 following a row over the controversial content of the Late Late Show whose freedom of expression he defended. He worked as a sports commentator for many years before pioneering the chat show format in the UK. He is best known for his work as a presenter on the chat show This is Your Life which ran from its inception in 1955 until his death in 1987. One of the interviews he made in 1960 was with the Irish writer Brendan Behan in Meet the Quare Fella. He was awarded an honorary Commander of the British Empire in 1970 for his contribution to British broadcasting. He died some years later in 1987, age 64, following a short illness. Title A name given to the resource Heinz Rühmann and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Heinz Rühmann, Germany Description An account of the resource These black and white photos are of the German film actor Heinrich (Heinz) Rühmann and the film festival director Dermot Breen.  Heinz Rühmann, standing on the left in these photos, was born in 1902. He was a prolific German film and television actor who acted in over 100 films in his lifetime and is considered a film legend for his contribution to the German film industry. Rühmann managed to court all sectors of German society including the Third Reich, where seemingly he was a favourite of Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels, as well as the diarist Ann Frank, who had his picture pinned on the wall of her hiding place, where it still hangs on display today. Rühman's filmography includes Er Kannes Nicht Lassen (Alex von Ambesser, 1962), based on the Father Brown stories by GK Chesterton, and the Hollywood-produced Ship of Fools (Stanley Kramer, 1965) with Vivien Leigh and Lee Marvin. His final film role was as Konrad in Faraway, So Close (1993) directed by Wim Wenders and starring Peter Falk and Nastassja Kinski. Rühmann died in 1994 and was posthumously awarded the 'Goldene Kamera' in 1995 for his contribution to German cinema. Both men are wearing dinner jackets accessorised with a bow-tie and a pin on the left lapel. The light of the camera illuminates Mason, with his grey-flecked hair, and bounces off his cheek bones. His shorter colleague, with dark hair and horn-rimmed glasses, looks on towards the companion to whom they are speaking. James Mason (1909-1984) appears a couple of times in the archive. Born in England he found success in both England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. He was nominated for three Academy Awards for A Star is Born (George Cukor, 1954) with Judy Garland, Lolita (Stanley Kubrick, 1962) and the Silvio Narizzano award-winning film Georgy Girl (1966) with Lynn Redgrave and Charlotte Rampling. Mason was one of the early players in the Hollywood studio production system and negotiated strongly for contractual rights allowing him economic and creative freedom. Interestingly he registered as a conscientious objector during the Second World War. A small white table at the front of the stage displays four St Finbarr statuettes, together with a Waterford crystal award. Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse is seated just behind the table and is looking towards his right while clapping his hands. Born in Cork, Pearse Wyse (1928-2009) was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. A firm supporter of Jack Lynch he was a formidable opponent of Charles Haughey and was a member of the so-called 'Gang of 22'. Disillusioned with the Fianna Fáil party he went on to found the Progressive Democrats where he held a seat as a TD in the 1987 and 1989 elections. The photograph does not identify the guests but we note that the only woman on the stage of fourteen men is 'Miss Movie Girl 1967' who is seated next to the festival director Dermot Breen. We can make out Gus Healy sitting next to Breen. Healy was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. Koval, standing on the right with a martini glass in his hand, had a positive impact on the public representation of the festival during the 1960s and was instrumental in keeping Cork on the radar of the international press until his death in 1970. This picture was taken in London at an event hosted by the London Friends of the Festival held at the Martini International Club whose logo is printed on the front of these promotional photographs. The Martini Terrace is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House located at the corner of Haymarket and the Pall Mall in London. Built in 1959 the building has attracted controversy for being the only skyscraper in this locality. Title A name given to the resource Festival Mass with Lord Mayor Seán O'Leary Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Seán O'Leary, Lord Mayor, Festival Mass, St. Francis Church, Umberto Noni Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor of Cork Seán O'Leary reading from the pulpit of St. Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972. (So while this photo is not dated we can date it as 1972 given his term of office.) O'Leary studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. He noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honors of his life. ('Esteemed judge, mayor and senator was a backroom giant', Irish Independent, 06.01.2007) In this image O'Leary is standing at the altar of the Byzantine-styled red-brick Church and Friary of St Francis which is distinguished by its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light, and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Umberto Noni. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr Mass. Title A name given to the resource Cork Film International Reception, London Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Richard Beamish, Tom Nicholas, London Friends of Cork, Martini Terrace, London Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the festival director, Dermot Breen, with the vice-chairman of the festival committee, Richard (Dick) Beamish, and Tom Nicholas (centre) from the London Friends of Cork. They are attending a reception at the Martini Terrace in London, where details of the 20th Cork Film International Festival were announced (which allows us to date this photo 1975). The Martini Terrace is an iconic landmark that sits on the top floor of the 18-storey New Zealand House located at the corner of Haymarket and the Pall Mall in London. It was built in 1959 and was, and is, a controversial building being the only skyscraper in this locality. The terrace was used for receptions and launches and has a view over Trafalgar Square. In 1992 it was listed Grade II cementing its place in the architectural history of London. The photograph is undated but from the clothes we might guess the picture was taken in the 1960s or 1970s. Atkinson in a dark suit is smiling directly at the camera as he presents an award, or memento, to the recipient who is wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth smock-style dress.
