Cork had a rich history of dockers working at the Port of Cork, unloading ships berthed at the city's bustling quays; this ended in 2009 following the modernisation of work practices. In this 1950s photo, Markus, wearing a dark coat over a light-coloured dress, is shown laughing and signing her autograph as she turns towards one of the men. On the far left a man can be seen with his head sticking out of a circular porthole window. In the background, we can make out a shipyard crane festooned with crane cables. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love (Gustav Ucicky, 1939). Markus was awarded the prestigious German culture award - the Gold Film Tape - for her contribution to German film in 1986. Koscina (1933-1994) was born to a Greek father and Polish mother, and moved to Italy to live with her sister when she was a teenager. She had an extensive filmography including parts in mostly Italian genre movies including The Railroad Man (Pietro Germi, 1956) (which was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1956), Guendalina (Alberto Lattuada, 1957), and Hercules (Pietro Francisci, 1958) for which she gained international attention. She acted for Hollywood-produced movies on a few occasions including alongside Paul Newman in The Secret War of Harry Frigg (Jack Smight, 1968) and with Rock Hudson in Hornets' Nest (Franco Cirino, 1970). Before her work in film, she was a fashion model as well as a physics student at the University of Naples. Her final film appearance was in Kim Novak is on the Phone (Riki Roseo, 1994) before she died later that year from breast cancer. Wearing a tweed coat and a white hat, Neagle is chatting with two young children who are on the hospital bed. The little girl, with a large ribbon tied into her hair, is reaching out to the gloved hand of Neagle while the young boy, wearing a striped jumper, looks on. In Neagle's left hand she is carrying a rattan woven basket of light-coloured flowers. Neagle was a popular actor during the 1930s-1950s. She was best known for her many historical characters including Nell Gwyn in Nell Gwyn (Herbert Wilcox, 1934) and Let's Make Up (Herbert Wilcox, 1954). She is recorded in the Guinness Book of Records for her 2,062 consecutive performances in the stage play Charlie Girl which ran from 1965 to 1971. Neagle was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1952 for her services to drama so would have been Lady Anna Neagle during her visit to Cork.
