Wearing a long patterned dress accessorised with an elaborate necklace, Cleveland is turned towards the compere smiling. Cleveland is best known to us for her work with the Monty Python troupe. She was the only woman associated with the show and would appear in thirty of the forty-five Monty Python episodes as well as the Monty Python films Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones 1975), Monty Python's Life of Brian (Terry Jones, 1979) and Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (Terry Jones, 1983). Terry Gilliam was also a visitor to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. Gus Healy, seated on the far left, was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. He is seated next to the artist Frank Sanquest, in half-rimmed spectacles and wearing his trade-mark dickie bow. Sanquest (1912-2008) was a Cork-born artist who worked for many years as resident set-designer for the Cork Opera House before it burnt down in 1954. He was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James N. Healy; they often toured with John B Keane plays, starring the Cork actor Michael Twomey who also came to the Cork Film Festival. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest worked as the Arts Editor for the Cork Examiner and would attend festival press conferences for the paper. Breen, with a cigarette in hand, was a colleague of Sanquest for many years – they would have come across each other in Cork through their involvement with the theatre. For example, when the Cork Opera House burnt down in 1954 the Palace theatre, then managed by Dermot Breen, stepped in offering its stage to the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was then set-designer for the Cork Opera House and the Cork Operatic Society. By the late fifties Breen gave up managing the theatre in order to run the film festival and his job at the Palace was taken over by Dan Donovan. Frank Sanquest was also a journalist for the then Cork Examiner and worked as its arts editor from 1940 to 1987. He was the father of five children with his wife Rose, including the artist Kevin Sanquest and the writer Rosalind (Roz) Crowley. In 2009 Kevin Sanquest created a national portrait collection in Fota House, Carrigtwohill, Cork, titled Inheritance – Honouring the Cork Legacy; he passed away in 2013. Interestingly Kevin Sanquest was the first manager of the Cork music legend Rory Gallagher and the band Taste. His sister, the journalist and author Roz Crowley, refers to the legacy of Rory Gallagher in her book Macroom Mountain Dew – Memories of Ireland’s First Rock Festival (OnStream Publications Ltd., 2016). Patrick O’Sullivan is sitting on Robin O’Sullivan’s desk who is looking up at him as they talk. A small stone sculpture, which might be a festival award, sits on the table between them and behind them, pinned to the back wall, we note a hand-drawn cartoon of a robin on top of a Coca-Cola can wrapped in film reel. Patrick O’Sullivan (1940-2015) was born in London to Irish parents and studied sculpture in England before moving to Cork in 1971. He lectured in sculpture at the Crawford College of Art and Design and during the time of this photo, dated 1980s, he was Head of Sculpture, a post he held from the 1980s to 1990s. O’Sullivan’s work, in marble, wood and bronze, has been exhibited around Ireland and his commission, City, made from Kilkenny limestone, was placed on the South Mall in Cork as part of the Cork 800 sculpture symposium in 1985. Patrick O’Sullivan was a member of Aosdána. Established in 1981, Aosdána was set up by the Arts Council to honor artists whose work has contributed to the arts in Ireland. Membership is by peer nomination and is limited to 250 living artists who have produced a distinguished body of work. Fellow artist and Aosdána member Michael Quane speaking of O’Sullivan notes that: "Patrick O’Sullivan was always insightful and never failed to challenge. Like his work, he too in his personal style was quiet, quizzical, and enigmatic. Hatfield, in a dress suit, is smiling as he looks to his right at his young companion. On his left a lady, in a white fur-trimmed jacket, smiles broadly at the camera. This is the only image we have of Hurd Hatfield in the archive and is particularly special because his name is forever associated with Cork in the naming of Hatfield House on Tobin Street. Hatfield House was the headquarters for the Cork film festival for many years and was named for Hurd Hatfield who was a friend of the festival. Hatfield House is now the home of Barbara Hubert Hand Bookbindery. Tobin Street itself is the home of the Triskel Arts Centre which is attached to the medieval Christchurch which fronts onto South Main Street. In 1984 excavations on this narrow street revealed medieval layers constituting backyards of houses that once fronted onto Tobin Street.  Hurd Hatfield (1917-1998) was born in New York City, studied drama in London, but eventually made his home in East Cork after visiting his friend, the actor Angela Lansbury, whom he met on the set of The Picture of Doran Gray, and who lived in nearby Conna. He restored the 13th-century Ballinterry House and spent the last twenty years or so of his life there. He made his name in Hollywood after playing the title role of Dorian Gray in the MGM film The Picture of Dorian Gray (Albert Lewin, 1945). His filmography includes The Diary of a Chambermaid (Jean Renoir, 1946), The Beginning or the End (Norman Taurog, 1947), Mickey One (Arthur Penn, 1961) with bit parts in movies such as The Boston Strangler (Richard Fleischer, 1968) and Her Alibi (Bruce Beresford, 1989).  Interestingly Hatfield was a student of the Russian-American actor and teacher Mikhail Chekhov, nephew of the playwright Anton Chekhov, and would perform extensively with his company in the former Soviet Union. His link with Russian culture was profound and on his death bed in Cork, he was attended to by a Russian Orthodox priest. Title A name given to the resource Actors John Clive, Pamela Stephenson and Nicholas Ball Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, John Clive, Nick Ball, Nicholas Ball, Pamela Stephenson, Billy Connolly Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the actors John Clive, Pamela Stephenson and Nicholas Ball in a photo dated 1970. All three are facing the camera smiling. Clive and Ball wear a festival ribbon pinned to their jackets and we also notice how the belt of Nicholas Ball has the logo ‘ball’ stitched onto it. John Clive, on the left in a tweed jacket, was an English film and television actor and author. He is best known to us from his film roles in The Italian Job (Peter Collinson, 1969) with Michael Caine, A Clockwork Orange (Stanley Kubrick, 1971) and four of the Carry On films from the 1970s. He also played a small part in the Norman Cohen directed movie Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (1977); the Irish director Cohen also came to Cork around the time of this photo. Famously Clive was the voice of John Lennon in the animated film Yellow Submarine (George Dunning, 1968) as the Beatles did not want to use their own voices in the movie. He was also a successful author for his best-selling books including KG200, The Last Liberator, and Barossa. Nicholas Ball and Pamela Stephenson were a couple around the time of this photo having being married for brief time in the 1970s before she met, and eloped with, Billy Connolly in 1979. Born in New Zealand, Stephenson has forged a prolific career as writer, performer and psychologist. Her movie credits include Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) in which she acted with John Clive and Lynda Bellingham, both of whom were at the festival. The photographs, by the photographer Donal Sheehan, include the festival director Dermot Breen holding forth alongside the journalist and artist Frank Sanquest, Dick Beamish, and journalist Larry Lyons. They are sitting around a table which is scattered with the detritus of the day including papers, ashtrays, and a black Ericsson Dialog-style telephone. Frank Sanquest, sitting on the far left of the photo, wearing a striped shirt with a dickie-bow, was a Cork-born artist who specialised in portraiture and landscapes. He studied art at the Cork Crawford School of Art and London’s Central School of Art and the College of Printing before returning to Cork. He was a past president of the Munster Fine Art Society and for many years was resident set designer for the Cork Opera House. He was an excellent scene painter and his work at the Cork Opera House included the set for Oklahoma in the 1950s when Dan Donovan was directing for the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James Healy which toured with John B Keane plays often with the Cork actor Michael Twomey. They had great success with Sive in 1959. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest also worked as the Arts Editor for The Cork Examiner, in whose capacity he might have been attending the Film Festival press briefings. He died in 2008, age 95. The journalist Larry Lyons, sitting behind Dick Beamish by the wall, also worked for The Cork Examiner in the 1970s; his journalism covered the fraught days of the troubles in the early 1970s as well as film reviews.
