Wearing a light-coloured summer dress accessorised with a coloured headband tied into her dark hair, Addams is facing the river and smiling as she casts the fishing rod overhead. On the ground by her feet lies an open tin-can probably used for bait. She might be reeling in the line as we can see a fish swinging at its end, while above in the clear sky a solitary gull passes over. Across the river, we can see a detached two-story building, originally the Christian Brother's School, located at the end of Sullivan's Quay. We can just make out the start of the inscription on the wall at the junction with Sober Lane: 'Founded A.D. 1828'. In the distance, on the far right, the Gothic spires of Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral rise above the horizon beyond the stone facade of the South Gate Bridge, which links the south side of Cork to the city centre. Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades, she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, 1952), the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953), A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the Cork Film Festival that year, as well as the television series The Saint (1962-69) with Roger Moore as Simon Templar. Addams had a tumultuous personal life and her marriage to Prince Don Vittorio Emanuele Massimo of Roccasecca in 1954, when she was age 23 and he 43, was the subject of a cover story in Life magazine. She separated from Prince Massimo some four years later although divorce was not granted by the Italian courts until 1971 after which she married Jimmy White. Massimo is shown, wearing a light-coloured suit, laughing whilst bent over speaking into the microphone of the switchboard operator's headset. He is surrounded by an animated group of switchboard exchange operators, each with a headset hanging from around their necks. At the back of the photo, a caption note is attached stating that the image depicts the Prince telling the world about Dawn's request for a milk bath. His wife, the actor Dawn Addams, achieved notoriety in Cork that year for requesting a bath filled with milk at the Metropole Hotel; the request caused consternation and was turned down by the-then hotel manager, Douglas Vance. She went on to later admit that it was a publicity stunt dreamt up by her publicist. (We can date this photo as 1957 based on this incident.) Vittorio Massimo was from the princely house of Massimo, historically one of the great aristocratic families of Rome and a major patron of the arts. He was married to Dawn Addams from 1954 to 1971 and is the father of the photographer, Stefano Massimo, Prince of Roccasecca. President Kelly is standing second from the left and is caught in conversation with his three colleagues, all in evening wear. President Seán T.O'Kelly (1882-1966) was a Fianna Fáil politician who served as the second President of Ireland from 1945 to 1959. He was a friend of Éamon de Valera and, as with de Valera, opposed the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921. O'Kelly was a co-founder of Fianna Fáil after de Valera left Sinn Féin. He retired in 1959 and was replaced by former Taoiseach, de Valera, who had over the years expressed dismay at O'Kelly's membership of the Order of the Knights of Saint Columbanus - an Irish national Catholic fraternal organisation. In this picture, O'Kelly is standing with Louis Elliman (1906-1965) who was an Irish Impresario who managed many of Ireland's cinema screens during the 1950s. Elliman brought film production to Ireland opening the Ardmore Studios, with Emmet Dalton, in 1958. Elliman was involved with the early planning of the Cork Film Festival, along with the festival founder Dermot Breen. Flags of the participating countries adorn the building in a daytime street scene. A group of boys on the left of the picture face the camera, just about to cross the street. Behind them, bicycles lay strewn on the pavement and besides them, two cars are parked at the kerb-side. To the right of the Savoy, we can see the old façade of the Irish Tourist Bureau (Oifig Fáilte). Amongst the cinema posters on display, we can just make out posters advertising the appearance of the German actor Claus Holm (1918-1996) and the German screenwriter and director Bernhard Grzimek (1909-1987) who was the director of the documentary Serengeti Shall Not Die (Grzimek, 1959). It won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 1960. The Savoy cinema was opened on 12th May 1932 by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Frank J. Wallace with a screening of Peach O'Reno (William A. Seiter, 1931). It could hold 2,242 patrons and boasted an Art Deco façade. In his book on Irish Cinemas, Jim Keenan noted the Savoy had an "ornate 'atmospheric' auditorium, which, like the Savoy in Dublin, was designed to resemble a street scene in Venice... Small lights set into the ceiling of the auditorium were designed to create the illusion that the audience was seated outdoors at night beneath the stars. Breen is shown laughing in the centre of the photo surrounded by the three women who are smiling towards the camera. The women are between them accessorised with pearls and a fur stole and we might guess that they are Italian actors who visited Cork this year and include Luisa Della Noce. On the wall behind them we can just make out the edge of a poster advertising Padri e figli (Fathers and Sons) (Mario Monicelli, 1957), an Italian comedy film starring Vittorio De Sica who would visit the Cork Film Festival a number of times during the 1950s. Addams is shown in profile with her arms around Breen who is smiling up above the eyeline of the camera. Both are in formal wear with Addams wearing a dark-coloured satin gown, accessorised with white gloves and a small handbag and a ribbon tied into her dark hair. Breen is wearing a dark suit with a bow-tie and has a cigarette in his left hand. This photo was taken in 1957, the year that Dawn Addams played alongside Charlie Chaplin in the film A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the festival. She had an illustrious and somewhat controversial relationship with the film festival. Due in part she admitted years later to the advice of her publicist advising her to court publicity. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much commotion in the press; it was shot down by the manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet" (Independent, 09.11.2012). Her vivacious personality must have been a joy to capture by the photographers of the day as is evident from the many photos of her in the archive. Sweeney (1909-1991) was an RTÉ radio broadcaster and producer; the RTÉ archives notes that he started work with RTÉ in the 1950s and was a producer on RTÉ Radio's Sunday Miscellany for many years. He is shown in this photo wearing a dark suit and holding a microphone close up towards Addams, who is caught in mid-conversation with him. Addams is wearing a light-coloured dress tied at the waist and is shown resting her right elbow on the table next to her, which also holds the recording equipment.
