The photo shows the Opera House lit up in neon lights advertising the film festival. The long exposure of the shot lights up the light trails of the traffic along Lavitts Quay on the right. While this photo is marked 1980s the large gorilla probably references the imagery of the 1994 Cork Film Festival, for which the artist Kieran O'Connor designed a poster and programme cover showing 'King Kong' standing on top of the Shandon Bells & Tower of St Anne's Church in Shandon, Cork. The façade of the Opera House has changed since this photo was taken and in 2003 renovation works on the façade of the building and the surrounding Emmet Place were completed. Emmet Place, at the entrance to the Opera House, has since been redeveloped into a plaza-like square. The fly-tower, seen behind the neon sign in this photo, is still in place however. For many years it provided the backdrop to the iconic Toyota roof sign which occupied 3 sides of the tower on the north, east and west. The Toyota sign has since been replaced by UCC signage in a new collaboration with UCC and the old Toyota letters, at 1.5 metres tall, were recommissioned by the Greek artist Bill Balaskas whose work 'Red Air' transformed the six Toyota letters into a public art installation. The film festival moved to the Opera House in the mid-eighties whilst under the stewardship of Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan, after negotiations with the Opera House manager Dick Hill. Around this time Charlie Hennessy, the festival chairman, secured funding from Ford Ireland, just before it closed down, providing the festival with an injection of funding along with the Irish Film Board and RTÉ. In 1985 the festival opened at the Opera House offering Cork an alternative 1000-seated venue for its screenings. A bearded Cyril Cusack stands on the left, arms folded, in mid-conversation while both Eamon Andrews, at the centre, and Dermot Breen smile for the camera. Cyril Cusack (1910-1993), and his daughter Sinéad, were both visitors to the festival. Born in South Africa, to an English mother and Irish father, Cusack ended up in Ireland when his parents separated. He joined the Abbey Theatre in 1932 with whom he acted almost sixty plays before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1962. In the meantime he had established a successful film career and has an extensive filmography including The Rising of the Moon (John Ford, 1957), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (Martin Ritt, 1965), The Day of the Jackal (Fred Zinnemann, 1973), and as Michil, in the first Irish language film Poitín (Bob Quinn, 1978) starring Cusack along with Donal McCann, Niall Tóibín, and Mick Lally. This photo is marked 1959 and Cusack had filmed Shake Hands with the Devil (Michael Anderson, 1959) that year. His last stage performance was in Chekhov's Three Sisters (1990) in which his three daughters, Sinéad, Sorcha, and Niamh also acted.  Dublin-born Eamon Andrews (1922-1987) was a well-known Irish radio and television presenter who worked primarily in England. He chaired the Radio Éireann Authority (now the RTÉ Authority) from 1960 overseeing the introduction of state television in Ireland. However he relinquished the role in 1964 following a row over the controversial content of the Late Late Show whose freedom of expression he defended. He worked as a sports commentator for many years before pioneering the chat show format in the UK. He is best known for his work as a presenter on the chat show This is Your Life which ran from its inception in 1955 until his death in 1987. One of the interviews he made in 1960 was with the Irish writer Brendan Behan in Meet the Quare Fella. He was awarded an honorary Commander of the British Empire in 1970 for his contribution to British broadcasting. He died some years later in 1987, age 64, following a short illness. Title A name given to the resource Danish film critic Bjørn Rasmussen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Bjørn Rasmussen, Denmark Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the pioneering film critic Bjørn Rasmussen. In this photo, marked 1958, Rasmussen is seated at a desk speaking into a microphone. He rests his hands, folded over each other, on the crook of a wooden walking stick and is caught in mid-conversation glancing upwards. He is dressed in a light-coloured suit with a white shirt, with the collar of the shirt and tie slightly askew. The 1958 festival programme includes a profile of Rasmussen, along with the president of the jury, John Grierson, producer Joy Batchelor and MGM manager Douglas King. Born in 1918, Rasmussen was known for a long-running television series, Filmorientering, and Filmkronik, a film review programme. He taught film studies at the University of Copenhagen and was the head of the International Jury for the 21st Berlin Film Festival in 1971. That year the Golden Bear for best film was awarded to The Garden of the Finzi-Continis (Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini) directed by Vittorio De Sica who was a frequent visitor to the Cork festival in its early years.  Rasmussen died the following year in 1972, age 54. The Lord Mayor Seán French, wearing his chain of office, is seated behind Hemmings next to the former Lord Mayor Gus Healy. Some of the other nine delegates are provisionally identified at the back of the photo as the Everyman Theatre founder, and Presentation Brothers College (PBC) teacher, Dan Donovan, Teddy O’Brien, festival director Dermot Breen, and Dorinda Coomber.  David Hemmings was an English actor, director, and producer who achieved international fame as a sixties icon following his memorable role, as a London fashion photographer (which might have been based on David Bailey), in Blow-Up (1966), by the Italian director Michelangelo Antonioni, starring Vanessa Redgrave and Sarah Miles. He later played the leading man, opposite Jane Fonda, in Roger Vadim’s fantasy Barbarella (1970). His filmography includes The Charge of the Light Brigade (Tony Richardson, 1968), Alfred the Great (Clive Donner, 1969) (which was filmed in Ireland), Juggernaut (Richard Lester, 1974), with Richard Harris and Omar Sharif, and the gangster movie The Squeeze (Michael Apted, 1977) with Stacy Keach and Edward Fox. Distracted by television roles and running his company, Hemdale Corporation, during the 1980s, his credits include Magnum PI, Airwolf, The A-Team, and Quantum Leap. By the 2000s his return to film was well-received and included the role of ‘Cassius’ in Gladiator (Ridley Scott, 2000), and the role of ‘Lenny’ in the poignant Last Orders (2001), alongside Tom Courtenay and Michael Caine, which was shown at the 46th edition of the Cork Film Festival in 2001. His role in The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (2003), with Sean Connery, was one his final roles before his unexpected death in Romania in 2003, age 62, whilst filming the British-Romanian horror film Blessed (a.k.a.Samantha’s Child) (Simon Fellows, 2004) with Heather Graham and James Purefoy. We also note that he had a minor role in the film St Joan (1957), based on the George Bernard play, directed by Austrain-born director Otto Preminger, who came to the film festival with Jean Seberg in the late 1950s.
