They are probably sitting under the Harp Lager-sponsored umbrella of the festival club and are chatting, drinking, and smoking as are the animated guests who sit at tables around them. Jon Finch, at the right of the photo in a leather jacket pulling on a cigarette, was an English film and stage actor born in 1942. He was a handsome in demand actor who achieved some notoriety for turning down plum roles when offered them due to a self-proclaimed lack of ambition, such as the chance to replace Sean Connery and play James Bond in Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973) (the part went to Roger Moore instead). In the early 1970s Finch played supporting roles in Hammer Horror productions The Horror of Frankenstein (Jimmy Sangster, 1970) and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) with Dawn Addams, a regular visitor to the Cork Film Festival in its earlier days, with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. But it was for his Shakespearean roles Finch would become well known. Most famously he played Macbeth in Macbeth (aka The Tragedy of Macbeth) (Roman Polanski, 1971) alongside his companion in this picture, Francesca Annis, as Lady Macbeth. Finch also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1972) as well the BBC television productions Richard II (1978), Henry IV, parts one and two (1979), and as Don Pedro in the BBC’s Much Ado About Nothing (1984). His final film role was in the historical drama Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott, 2005) alongside Orlando Bloom and Eva Green. Finch died in 2012, age 71. Francesca Annis, chatting to her companion in this picture, is also an English film and stage actor with a prolific film career. At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) with Jon Finch, directed by Roman Polanski, whose wife Sharon Tate had recently been murdered in Hollywood by followers of Charles Manson. The film was financed by the Playboy magazine editor Hugh Hefner as mainstream studios refused to finance it given Polanski’s mental state and yet, despite its critical mauling at the time, the film has gone on to garner plaudits for its somewhat accurate depiction of a bleak violent world. As Polanski notes: … [the film] is violent. But the play is violent. And life is violent too. Harry Towb (1925-2009) was a popular actor from Northern Ireland who was familiar on both screen and stage. He began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border and following a move to London in the early 1950s his presence on the British stage was cemented. His work at the National Theatre was highly regarded including parts in Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1996), and Nikolai Erdman’s Russian comedy The Mandate (2004). While his filmography is small but rich, it was his television work that brought his distinctive features to the television screens on a regular basis with credits including Dixon of Dock Green, Z Cars, Doctor Who, Holby City, and in 2008 - just a year before his death - EastEnders. Standing next to Towb in this image is the Cork-born actor, Michael Twomey, who was born in 1933. Twomey grew up on the Mardyke and attended the Presentation Brothers College before working in insurance, as did his friend and colleague Frank Duggan. Twomey worked with the playwright John B Keane, and acted in many of his productions including Many Young Men of Twenty, The Year of the Hiker' and Sharon’s Grave. Yet it was for his acting in the two-hander Cha and Miah, with Frank Duggan, that Twomey will be remembered. Wearing an old mac and scarf, Twomey would play Miah, with his friend Duggan in the part of Cha, and they would shoot the breeze about the politics of the day on the RTÉ television show Hall’s Pictorial Weekly. The Press Comments section of the 1959 Festival of Cork programme has an image of Badal being presented the award for the film Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958). Vasgen Badal (1891-1959) was an Iranian-German film producer of which there is little known. He moved to Germany from Tehran as a young man where he learned about film and set up the film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion' producing a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. The rear of the photo notes that the Scottish documentary maker John Grierson is one of the three men in the background looking on at the presentation. Grierson was a Scottish documentary maker who coined the term 'documentary' in a review of Robert J. Flaherty's Moana (1926). He was jury president of the festival in 1958 and, in 1972, the prestigious Grierson Awards were set up to commemorate his life and contribution to documentary film. The flash of the camera lights up his animated face as he turns towards his dark-haired companion, identified at the back of the photo as Olive Burke. Dublin-born Eamon Morrissey (1943-) is a stage and television actor. He left school early and went to London where he acted in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come! in the 1964 world première. Morrissey is known for his comic roles and won an Irish television Jacob’s Award in 1977 for his performances in Frank Hall’s long-running satirical TV series, Hall’s Pictorial Weekly starring Frank Duggan and Michael Twomey. Twomey also came to the Cork Film Festival on a number of occasions in the seventies. Morrissey has appeared in Father Ted and the RTÉ soap opera Fair City. His work in Fair City was recognised by the annual Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) who nominated him for Best Supporting Actor in 2011. John Warrington (1916-1998) was a BBC producer and director known for The Sky Larks (1958), The Men from Room 13 (1959) and Silent Evidence (1962). He was a producer for the BBC series The Grove Family (1957-1957) which was created by Roland Pertwee and Michael Pertwee, who also came to the film festival during the 1970s. Much-loved, in its day, The Grove Family, named after the BBC Lime Grove Studios, is generally regarded as the first British TV soap opera. O'Leary stands at the microphone, notes in hand, and looks out to an unseen audience. Behind him we note the crystal decanter of whiskey which would often accompany a festival award presentation in the early days. The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. In a career that was distinguished and varied, he noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honours of his life. He died in 2006, age 65. Title A name given to the resource Louis Marcus with award Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Pearse Wyse, Louis Marcus, Peter Barry, Gus Healy, Award, Lord Mayor Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Irish director Louis Marcus holding the Waterford Glass Film Critics’ Award in the company of the politicians Pearse Wyse, Peter Barry, and Gus Healy. The four men are all wearing dinner suits accessorised with a bow tie and some decorated with a festival ribbon. We see from the archive that Marcus was presented the Waterford Crystal Award in 1975, for the best Irish film, by Miss Movie Girl Mary Tilson which helps us date this photo. The award was made by the film critics attending the festival and was aimed at encouraging Irish film making and also Government and industrial sponsorship of film making in Ireland. Marcus was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light. Conquest of Light detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. His first documentary, <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1959 - the same year that Mise Eire (Seoirse Mac Giolla Mhuire) premiered. Marcus often sat on the festival jury, and the 1979 film festival programme notes that Marcus, a member of the shorts jury that year, was “prominent in the efforts to get Government support for Irish film making, so far largely without success.” Pearse Wyse (1928-2009), at the left of the photo, was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. A firm supporter of Jack Lynch he was a formidable opponent of Charles Haughey and was a member of the so-called ‘Gang of 22’. Disillusioned with Fianna Fáil he went on to found the Progressive Democrats where he held a seat as a TD in the 1987 and 1989 elections. The photo is dated 1975 and notes that this is the ‘evening attire’ segment of the competition. The girls had to qualify from this round to be considered for the national Miss Movie Girl competition and after qualification their pictures would be posted in the Sunday World newspaper, with whom the competition was run in conjunction with. These eight girls in evening dress are not identified, but we hope that some of the public will recognise themselves and contact us so we can include their details! Dressed in white trousers and a checkered shirt, Peters is leaning back and holding a local guide book of Cork while smiling at the camera; her legs dangle over the chrome trim of the car’s radiator grill, next to the iconic Mercedes-Benz three-pointed star. Two small Irish flags adorn the car either side of the grill which might suggest that this was the Lord Mayor’s car. Behind Peters in the distance we can see the imposing three spires of St Fin Barre’s Cathedral. Designed by William Burges, and built 1827-81 from Cork limestone, the cathedral is located on the south side of the River Lee in Cork City. Burges designed it to be compact in a French Gothic style, with a narrow interior that soars to a great height. Its three spires stand out for their intricate architectural details including gargoyles and such embellishments throughout. Approximately 844 sculptures adorn the interior and exterior including 32 gargoyles and the twelve Apostles of The Last Judgement at the Tympanum over the entrance door. In this photo we cannot really make out the copper gilt-edged Resurrection Angle, also known fondly as the 'Goldie Angel' by locals, which adorns the main spire in place of a cross - a gift from the Victorian architect to the city. Mollie Peters was the stage name of Vivien Mollie Humphrey, an English actor best known for her role as Nurse Patricia Fearing opposite Sean Connery's 007 in Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). She was infamous for being the first Bond girl to take off her clothes on-screen - earning the franchise its first X-rating. Peters had a short-lived film career due mainly to contractual disagreements with her agent which forestalled her career.
