Dawn Addams married Prince Massimo, from the princely house of Massimo, historically one of the great aristocratic families of Rome and major patrons of the arts, in 1954. By all accounts they had a tumultuous relationship and by 1959 Addams sought a divorce which was only granted in 1971 due to strict catholic-influenced Italian laws. Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India, after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly 1952), and the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (1953) which was directed by Otto Preminger. Otto Preminger (1905-1986) was born in Austria-Hungary but fled to Austria with his family after the breakout of the first World War. He went on to work for Fox in Los Angeles and was known for defying the censorship code of Hollywood with his controversial films. He directed Dawn Addams in the American romantic comedy The Moon is Blue (1953) which was nominated for three Oscars. It incurred the wrath of the American censors for its 'light and gay treatment of the subject of illicit sex and seduction'. Preminger and United Artists contested the State Censor Board who were overturned in court and the success of the film was instrumental in diminishing the power of the Hollywood Production Code. Wearing a light-coloured summer dress, with white kitten-heeled slip-on shoes, she rests her right hand on the chained pillar of the wooden walkway, and poses for the camera, laughing. Behind her we see the imposing limestone façade of the City Hall which is located on Albert Quay in Cork. It was rebuilt in the 1930s following its burning down by the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries, during the 'Burning of Cork' in December 1920. Above Markus we see two unidentified flags on the City Hall fluttering in the wind. Winnie Markus was born in 1921 and moved to Germany, via Prague and Vienna, when she was sixteen. She started her acting career on the stage before accepting her first film role in 1939 with A Mother's Love directed by the Austrian Gustav Ucicky (1899-1961). Ucicky was probably a child of the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt; throughout his life Ucicky collected the works of his father which were later donated to the Klimt Foundation by his children. Standing on the left Hidari is holding a St Finbarr statue, the design of which is attributed to the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy. Her companion, dressed in a taffeta-style evening gown and striped linen-style scarf, is cradling the Waterford Glass trophy in the crook of her left arm.  Hidari is wearing a light-coloured kimono which is a traditional formal Japanese robe, usually made of hand-dyed silk and worn on special occasions. Hidari's kimono is tied at her waist with a metallic-coloured wide sash (known as an obi) which is wrapped around her waist and tied in the front with a bow. The lower half of the kimono is elaborately designed with images of simple huts which might be a reference to traditional Japanese tea houses. Sachiko Hidari (1930-2001) was a Japanese actor and film director. Born in the Toyama Prefecture she became an actor in 1952 when she was 22 years old. The Historical Dictionary of Postwar Japan (William D Hoover, 2018) notes that she received international recognition in 1957 when she received the award for best actor at the Cork Film Festival for her role in Kamiska Shiro No Hanzai (The Crime of Shiro Kamisaka) (1956), directed by Hisamat-su Seiji. By all accounts, she was an independent-minded woman who stepped outside the passive social role expected of Japanese women during this era. In 1977 she was the first Japanese woman to direct a film with Töi Ippon No Michi (Far Road) in which she also starred. It was the story of a railroad worker's wife set over the course of 30 years and was financed by the Japanese National Railway Workers' Union as it was difficult to get funding from the big studios (The New York Times, 12.02.1978). We note this photo is dated 1960 but Sachiko Hidari was given her award for best actor in 1957, so we bear this in mind. Interestingly, if this photo is from 1957 it was taken a year after she was threatened in Japan by gangsters from the yakuza crime syndicate. The yakuza were believed to have been hired by the Nikkatsu Film Company to intimidate her for daring to become an independent freelance actor outside of their control (The New York Times, 12.02.1978). A bespectacled Poole, standing on the far left, is smiling broadly at the camera next to a dashing colleague (who might be Mrs Poole?) who is also smiling broadly whilst holding up her glass. To the right Dermot Breen gazes off to the distance. Frank Poole was a managing director of Rank Film Productions, London during the 1960s until his retirement in the late 1970s. The Rank Organisation was a British film company whose contract players made regular appearances at the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s in particular. Films made by the Rank organisation during his era were dominated by the 'Carry On' film series as well as big-budget movies; investment steadily declined in the 1980s however before losses in the 1990s led to the eventual demise of what was once a powerful player in the film industry.
