Margaret Kerrigan, sitting on the far right next to David Kelly, was the wife of the labour politician Patrick Kerrigan, who served Cork as Lord Mayor from 1973 to 1974. He was nominated to the 13th Seanad by Liam Cosgrave, the then-Taoiseach, where he served until 1977. Kerrigan won a seat in the Cork City constituency in the 1977 general election and took his seat that year before dying two years later, age 51. They had four children, one of whom, Cathal Kerrigan, worked as a librarian in UCC for many years before his retirement in 2020. He recently collaborated with the Germany-based artist Padraig Robinson on his book Gaze Against Imperialism (Metaflux Publishing, 2019). The actor David Kelly appears in the archive on a number of occasions. Around the time of this photo, which is dated 1972 – but it might be 1973 or 1974 to coincide with the mayoralty of Patrick Kerrigan – Kelly had just completed the rarely seen 1973 British comedy film Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width (Ronnie Baxter, 1973) which also starred the Irish actor Joe Lynch (1925-2001). The small group are arriving into the marble lobby of the Imperial Hotel on the South Mall in Cork. Kelly, on the right next to Dermot Breen, is wearing a tweed jacket and tie, with light-coloured trousers and two-tone brogues. Born in Dublin, Kelly (1929-2012) was an Irish actor with a recognisable presence on the Irish stage and screen. His notable work includes Strumpet City (RTÉ, 1980), Into the West (Mike Newell, 1992), Waking Ned (Kirk Jones, 1998), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Tim Burton, 2005). Into the West was shown at the 2019 festival and is also preserved in the IFI Irish Film Archive. Kelly had an uncredited role in The McKenzie Break (Lamont Johnson, 1970) which starred Brian Keith and the Irish actor Mary Larkin who came to the Cork festival in 1980. Around the time of this picture, which is dated 1974, Kelly would play the inept builder in an episode of Fawlty Towers ('The Builders', 1975) which won him great acclaim. In an Irish Examiner article by John Daly looking back at the film festival, David Kelly is quoted recalling the train journey from Dublin to Cork: "Irish hospitality was at its finest on that train, an elegant Orient Express atmosphere wrapped in a thoroughly Celtic welcome that made strangers who got on in Dublin lifelong friends by the time it arrived in Cork. They are smiling and shaking hands as he passes her the award. Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades Addams worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, 1952), the then controversial, The Moon is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953), and A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) starring Charlie Chaplin which was screened at the Cork Film Festival that year. Jack Lynch (1917-1999) would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. At the time of this picture (marked as 1957) he served as Minister for Education and Minister for Gaeltacht Affairs. Dawn Addams married Prince Massimo, from the princely house of Massimo, historically one of the great aristocratic families of Rome and major patrons of the arts, in 1954. Dawn Addams and Vittorio Massimo were married in 1954 and separated in 1958 (a year after this photo was taken) but their divorce was not granted by the Italian courts until 1971. Behind them we can make out the festival director Dermot Breen with his head bowed down as he leaves the car which is parked kerb-side. A jostling crowd surrounds the car and actors, some reaching out towards them. The photo was taken in 1957, the year that Dawn Addams played alongside Charlie Chaplin in the film A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the festival that year. Wearing a light-coloured summer dress accessorised with a coloured headband tied into her dark hair, Addams is facing the river and smiling as she casts the fishing rod overhead. On the ground by her feet lies an open tin-can probably used for bait. She might be reeling in the line as we can see a fish swinging at its end, while above in the clear sky a solitary gull passes over. Across the river, we can see a detached two-story building, originally the Christian Brother's School, located at the end of Sullivan's Quay. We can just make out the start of the inscription on the wall at the junction with Sober Lane: 'Founded A.D. 1828'. In the distance, on the far right, the Gothic spires of Saint Fin Barre's Cathedral rise above the horizon beyond the stone facade of the South Gate Bridge, which links the south side of Cork to the city centre. Dawn Addams (1930-1985) was an English actor whose work in Hollywood coincided with the early years of the Cork Film Festival. Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. Her beauty and talent brought her to the attention of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios to whom she signed a seven-year contract in 1950. For the next two decades, she worked incessantly in film and television including the MGM films Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen, Gene Kelly, 1952), the then-controversial The Moon is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953), A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the Cork Film Festival that year, as well as the television series The Saint (1962-69) with Roger Moore as Simon Templar. Addams had a tumultuous personal life and her marriage to Prince Don Vittorio Emanuele Massimo of Roccasecca in 1954, when she was age 23 and he 43, was the subject of a cover story in Life magazine. She separated from Prince Massimo some four years later although divorce was not granted by the Italian courts until 1971 after which she married Jimmy White.
