He is shown, elbows resting on the table holding up a cigar in his left hand, listening to someone out of sight.  The date of the photo is '1960s' which would make Roy Edward Disney, born in 1930, and whom this photo closely resembles, approximately 40 years which makes us suspect either the date or subject of the photo. Another similar image in the archive, dated '1970s' might be more accurate. Roy Disney, who had a home in West Cork, was the nephew of the late Walt Disney and a formidable longtime senior executive of the Walt Disney Company. Born in California, he worked all his life for Walt Disney Productions and made a significant impact on its direction, striving to keep it from being split up by fellow Disney executives in particular Ron Miller in 1984, and Michael Eisner in 2005. Roy Disney became an adopted native of Cork when he purchased Coolmain Castle near Kilbrittain, County Cork, in the early 1990s and, being a keen sailor, was a regular visitor to Cork race week. He died from stomach cancer in 2009, age 79. The back of the photo identifies only Justin Keating who we see seated on the far right in the front row, looking down laughing. We recognise the former Lord Mayor, Gus Healy, from other images in the archive, and he is seated in the front row on the far left, next to his wife. The audience are all dressed in evening wear, dinner suits for the men and evening dresses for the women. They appear to be waiting for the show to start and are animated chatting to each other or looking around. Ashtrays are placed in intervals in front of the first row guests, most of whom are holding a programme in their hands. Justin Keating (1930-2009) was an Irish Labour party politician who would serve in Dáil Éireann under Liam Cosgrave as Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1973 to 1977. He was a key figure in the creation of the Labour party created by Brendan Corish in the 1960s and ushered in a new era of politics at the time. He also worked as a veterinary surgeon, and lectured at UCD, and was a journalist for RTÉ during its early days. Keating also represented Ireland at the European level serving twice as an MEP. He was the President of the Humanist Association of Ireland (HAI) whose tribute to him on his death notes that he was passionate about Ireland and the role of Europe in the world. Marcus on the left, with his distinctive glasses and beard, is turned slightly towards his companion, engaged in conversation. They are seated amongst a convivial crowd, drinking and smoking, at tables made from empty beer kegs with umbrellas used for cover. Louis Marcus was born in Cork City to an Irish Jewish family. His grandfather Louis Roseberg came to Cork in 1882, from Akmian, North of Lithuania, fleeing persecution from the Russian Empire. Cork Jews were often referred to as Akmajianites. Marcus began his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1965) and would continue to work on Gael-Linn documentaries until 1973. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light (1976) which detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. Marcus is a member of Aosdána (the Irish Association of Artists limited to 250 individuals, founded in 1981 by Charles Haughey) and an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 2011 he was awarded a special prize for his outstanding work in the Irish language at the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) Annual Meeting of Directors including Oliver Hirschbeigel, Dearbhla Walsh, Lenny Abrahamson and Ciaran Donnelly. His first documentary film <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prizewinners at the Cork Film Festival for some years. The Silent Art (18 mins.) was shown at the festival in 1959, with music by Bernard Geary and Declan Townsend, and commentary by festival stalwart Dan Donovan. The thirteen guests, all of whom are smiling for the camera, sit on either side of a long table with the Fianna Fáil politician, Gus Healy, seated at its head. The wooden table is adorned with candlesticks and the guests are having soup and a roll served on patterned tableware.  The identified guest, Barbara Vance, was the wife of Douglas Vance, the manager of the Metropole Hotel located on MacCurtain Street, Cork. The Metropole was designed by the architect Arthur Hill and was opened in 1897. The hotel was originally run by Jimmy Musgrave, after whom Musgrave (now Irish Independent) Park was named for his dedication to Rugby. Until the mid-1950s it was known as Ireland's finest 'dry hotel' because the owners, the Musgraves, believed alcohol should not be served; the ban was lifted in 1956 at the behest of the manager Douglas Vance - just in time for the first Cork film festival. The hotel occupied the upper floors of the building with the ground floor and basement let out for retail. Two shops on either side of the entrance included the famous Turkish Delight sweet shop Hadji Bey run by Harutan Batmazian who came to Cork from Armenia in 1903. Lawson's Outfitters occupied the other unit and the name can still be seen on the hotel's façade today. Edward VII supposedly took high tea on the roof of the hotel when he visited Cork in 1903 for the Great Exhibition of Cork. Douglas Vance took over the running of Metropole Hotel in 1944 and made headlines around the world when he refused a request from the English actor Dawn Addams for a bath to be filled with milk, noting that the Cork people would be appalled since they found it hard to make ends meet at the time. Towb, on the left, is looking down at his left wrist as if checking the time. The taller Twomey stands on the right, papers in hand, looking forward speaking into the microphone. Harry Towb (1925-2009) was a popular actor from Northern Ireland who was familiar on both screen and stage. He began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border and following a move to London in the early 1950s his presence on the British stage was cemented. His work at the National Theatre was highly regarded including parts in Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1996), and Nikolai Erdman’s Russian comedy The Mandate (2004). While his filmography is small but rich, it was his television work that brought his distinctive features to the television screens on a regular basis with credits including Dixon of Dock Green, Z Cars, Doctor Who, Holby City, and in 2008 - just a year before his death - EastEnders. Standing next to Towb in this image is the Cork-born actor, Michael Twomey, who was born in 1933. Twomey grew up on the Mardyke and attended the Presentation Brothers College before working in insurance, as did his friend and colleague Frank Duggan. Twomey worked with the playwright John B Keane, and acted in many of his productions including Many Young Men of Twenty, The Year of the Hiker' and Sharon’s Grave. Yet it was for his acting in the two-hander Cha and Miah, with Frank Duggan, that Twomey will be remembered. Wearing an old mac and scarf, Twomey would play Miah, with his friend Duggan in the part of Cha, and they would shoot the breeze about the politics of the day on the RTÉ television show Hall’s Pictorial Weekly. The films would be viewed by the festival jury in a studio situated over Paddy Barry’s pub (now Gallagher’s) on the corner of Bridge Street and McCurtain Street. Once the festival was over it was Newman’s job to send the film reels onto their next film festival destination. In the early days most of the organisers of the festival were amateurs and Billy Newman would use a week of his yearly holiday to work for the festival on a voluntary basis. This picture is of interest too because of the film reel itself. Thomas Edison is often credited with making the first camera in the 1890s and film reel was invented alongside the advent of motion-picture cameras. It is traditional to discuss the length of films in terms of ‘reels’ with each reel designed to hold 35-millimeter motion-picture film running approximately 1,000 feet which translates as approximately 11 minutes for sound film. The job of the projectionist was to ensure the smooth transition of a reel-to-reel changeover. The advent of a 'two-reeler' gave the projectionist 2,000 feet of film to play with before the transition. The back of the photograph identifies two of the participants as Donal Wilde, sitting at the table, and the photographer Padraig Kennelly. There is little information on Donal Wilde but we know he was a cameraman who possibly worked on the film Patriots for a Man: Blue Shirts and their Times (RTÉ, Nick Coffey, 2000), a film on the history of Irish far-right organisations in the 1930s. A bearded Pádraig Kennelly, wearing a light-coloured jacket and dark trousers, is standing on the right, hands resting on the table and leaning down while he follows the demonstration on the table before him. Kennelly was an Irish journalist, cameraman and photographer, who co-founded and edited Kerry’s Eye newspaper. He is best known for pursuing photojournalism with his wife, the photojournalist Joan Kennelly, who died in 2007. The Kennelly's were a formidable team, achieving international recognition with their work documenting the 1969 visit of Charles de Gaulle to Ireland. De Gaulle had just resigned as President of France and his exile to Ireland caused consternation and avid interest back home so, armed with local knowledge and a long-lens camera, the Kennelly’s tracked the de Gaulle entourage around Kerry taking a number of pictures one of which made the cover of Paris Match. Frank McNally notes in his article on 'Capturing a General' that, for many years after. the Kennelly’s would raise a toast to the de Gaulles’ visit: “Up Kerry and vive la France!” (Irish Times, 29.05.2013). We only see his back but recognise him from his distinctive side profile. A single spotlight throws its glare down towards the stage and flecks of dust can be made out in the light of the camera. Guests are seated behind Breen along the width of the large stage. We can make out the low profile of the Fianna Fail politician, and sometimes Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy sitting at its centre. Dermot Breen (1924-1978) was the founder of the film festival when he proposed it under the umbrella of the Cork Tóstal Council where he was secretary. Under his auspices, the Cork Film Festival opened at the Savoy Cinema in 1956 with a showing of A Town Like Alice (Jack Lee, 1956) – itself a controversial film at the time because of being withdrawn from Cannes lest it give offence to Japan due to the nature of its World War II content. Breen was born in Waterford and educated in Cork at the Presentation Brothers College on the Mardyke. He was primarily a salesman until he became the manager (1956-1964) of the Palace Cinema in Cork. His greatest achievement however was the establishment of the Cork International Film Festival in 1956 which he ran until his untimely death in 1978. It was one of the first film festivals to earn the recognition of the International Federation of Film Producers Association in Washington in 1959 allowing it to become an annual event. Breen travelled the world attending festivals receiving honours from the 1964 Berlin Film Festival in recognition of his filmic work. He was a keen advocate of short and documentary films whose legacy can be still seen today in the Cork Film Festival ethos. Interestingly Breen also worked as the State film censor from 1972 following a stint on the film censorship board from 1970. The film commentator, Ciaran Carty, saw the appointment of Breen as a time of liberalisation for film in Ireland. Carty notes that Breen seemingly tried to appease the Catholic right with a reactionary stance whilst his actual decision-making contained fewer cuts than any other censor before. (Carty, Confessions of a Sewer Rat: A Personal History of Censorship and the Irish Cinema, New Island Books, 1995, 101.) On his death Breen was replaced by Frank Hall, of Hall’s Pictorial Weekly, who would serve as Irish film censor for the coming decade.
