This photo was taken in 1957, the year that Dawn Addams played alongside Charlie Chaplin in the film A King in New York (Charlie Chaplin, 1957) which was screened at the festival. She had an illustrious and somewhat controversial relationship with the film festival. Due in part she admitted years later to the advice of her publicist advising her to court publicity. In particular her request, during the 1957 film festival, for a milk bath at the at the Cork Metropole Hotel caused much commotion in the press; it was shot down by the manager of the hotel, Douglas Vance, because "the people of Cork are finding it hard to make ends meet" (Independent, 09.11.2012). Her vivacious personality must have been a joy to capture by the photographers of the day as is evident from the many photos of her in the archive. The photo notes that the party was a ‘Farewell to Captain Denis Gould’ who was festival secretary since its inception in 1956. The convivial crowd are gathered around Gould who is standing at the centre, wearing a light-coloured jacket, his right hand outstretched towards festival director Dermot Breen, who is kneeling, cigarette in hand, looking up at Gould. With his left hand Gould clasps the hand of the politician, and former Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy. We also recognise Robin O’Sullivan standing at the back on the left, under the fanlight wall sconce. O’Sullivan stepped in to run the film festival after the unexpected death of Breen in 1978, and ran it until Mick Hannigan and Theo Dorgan took over in the early eighties. The large group, of approximately forty men and women, appear to be singing, and some of the women in the front row hold hands, with arms across their bodies, as if singing the Scottish tune Auld Lang Syne to bid farewell to their friend and colleague. Nicholas, with a glass in hand, was a founding member of the London Friends of Cork and often hosted events at the Martini Terrace in London for the festival. The 1980 film festival programme notes that this group of London-based film people raised thousands of pounds to help the development of the festival. The film also starred Barry Crocker, Spike Milligan, and Peter Cook – one of the original founders of Private Eye. Title A name given to the resource Dermot Breen and camera crew in Fitzgerald's Park Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Fitzgerald's Park, BBC, Lord Mayor, Edward Fitzgerald, Arthur Hill, Cork Museum, Séamus Murphy Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the festival director Dermot Breen in Fitzgerald’s Park giving an interview to a BBC television crew in the late 1960s. The interview is taking place on one of the tree-lined avenues that dot the park amidst its landscaped gardens. Breen is shown talking to the interviewer, hands in pockets with a cravat tied at his neck; the brass buttons on his jacket glint in the sunlight. We see the three-man television crew from behind and note the belted-jacket on one of the crew suggesting that the photo was taken in the late 1960s or early 1970s.  The park itself is one of Cork’s finest spaces. It originated with the 1902-03 Cork International Exhibition which took place on 8 hectares of reclaimed marshlands along the Mardyke area of Cork City. Organised by the then Lord Mayor of Cork, Edward Fitzgerald, the exhibition was visited by Edward VII and Queen Alexandra and no expense was spared constructing elaborate exhibits including a switchback railway, a water chute, and a pavilion for the park. A decision was made to donate the grounds to Cork Corporation after the exhibition and the new public space was named after Edward Fitzgerald. The legacy of the exhibition can still be seen in the park today in the shape of the President’s and Lord Mayor’s Pavilion (1902) at the entrance to the Park. It was probably designed by the architect Arthur Hill, who also designed the Metropole Hotel. Interestingly Hadji Bey launched their Turkish Delight at the Exhibition and had a shop front at the Metropole Hotel so we might guess that Arthur Hill had a hand in that collaboration too. The Shrubberies House, now Cork Municipal Museum, was used as municipal offices by the Cork Corporation as headquarters to co-ordinate the rebuilding of the City Hall after it was burnt down during the Burning of Cork, by the British Auxiliaries, in December 1920. Under the aegis of Aloys Fleischmann the park set up a Cork Sculpture Park Committee in the mid-1960s, and thanks to that we can see many examples of work by the sculptor Séamus Murphy, including Dreamline and Michael Collins, as well as work from other artists including Marshall Huston and Joseph Higgins. Timon, on the far left, is looking towards Breen smiling. The unidentified lady, wearing a white dress, smiles to the camera as she raises her glass for a toast. As far as we know Riain Timon worked at Dublin Airport eventually becoming its catering manager. He is closely associated with Howth Yacht Club with whom he has volunteered for many years.
