Peter Gilmore (1931-2013) is best known for his role as James Onedin in the long-running BBC series The Onedin Line which ran from 1971 to 1980. The Onedin Line was based in late 19th-century Liverpool and told the story of the rise of a shipping company and the trials and tribulations that beset the Onedin family along the way. His filmography includes 11 appearances in the Carry On film franchise including its final release Carry On Columbus (Gerald Thomas) in 1992. Philbin, wearing a white suit accessorised with large sunglasses, and surrounded by her luggage, is accompanied by her sister, also in similarly large sunglasses. A similar item in the archive shows Philbin and her sister at the airport with film festival committee members and we might suppose that they are on festival business as part of the winning prize from the Miss Movie Girl competition. In October 1973 Philbin travelled to an International Congress in Venice where she hosted an Irish Whiskey event in the Hotel Excelsior in Lido, Venice. She was also a guest of the organisers of the Arnhem Film Festival in Holland that year. The three panellists, sitting at a table in front of long-armed microphones, include the English writer James Mitchell, the Irish actor Joe Tomelty, and the English screenwriter Michael Pertwee. Joseph Tomelty, sitting at the centre, was an Irish character actor, novelist and playwright known for his radio and stage work. He was a frequent visitor to the Cork festival, as far back as 1960, when that years programme noted that Tomelty presented awards to recipients in the presence of the then Lord Mayor of Cork Stephen Barrett. Tomelty was born in County Down, and was based in Northern Ireland where he made a significant contribution to its cultural history. Tomelty was instrumental in founding and managing the Group Theatre in Belfast in 1940 where his plays would be staged - apart from the controversial The End House (1944) which was premiered at the Abbey Theatre because Northern theatres wouldn't show it at the time. He wrote comedy dramas for the BBC, in particular The McCooeys which lasted seven years. Tomelty’s film work includes Odd Man Out (Carol Reed, 1947), and Moby Dick (John Huston, 1956) with Gregory Peck and the Irish actor Noel Purcell, but it was for his enduring commitment to the North of Ireland that he is fondly remembered.   Michael Pertwee, sitting on the far right of the photo, was an English playwright and screenwriter born in 1916. He comes from a prolific family of actors including his father, the actor and playwright Roland Pertwee, his brother the actor Jon Pertwee, best known for his Dr.Who, and his nephew the actor Sean Pertwee. As well as TV work, Michael Pertwee’s screenwriting credits include Richard Lester’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) and One More Time (Jerry Lewis, 1970) starring Sammy Davis Jr. At the time of this photo he had just finished Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World (Joseph McGrath, 1973) with Spike Milligan and the Irish actor Milo O’Shea. The photo also identifies the writer James Mitchell on the far left, cigarette in hand raised towards his mouth. Born in the North of England, Mitchell (1926-2002) was a prolific writer writing under his own name and the pen-names James Munro and Patrick O McGuire. Mitchell wrote over 70 novels, mostly crime fiction and spy thrillers, and 100 television scripts. He will be remembered best for the successful television series Callan (Thames Television) and When the Boat Comes In (BBC) which ran between 1976 and 1981. Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Mitchell had just completed Callan (1969-1972) starring Edward Woodward as the secret agent and hitman David Callan. The series went on to spawn novels, short stories, the film Callan (Don Sharp, 1974), and a TV movie Wet Job (1981) directed by Shaun O’Riordan. Interestingly, the full name of O’Riordan, who was born in Sri Lanka in 1927, is Shaun Stuart Harry Daniel O’Connell O’Riordan. O'Riordan also starred in the long-running popular British television sitcom The Larkins (1958-1964), playing the part of Eddie Larkin alongside the actors Margaret Rose Mount and David Kossoff, both of whom came to the Cork festival during the 1960s. In 1974 Mitchell served on the Shorts Jury for the Short Film Competition alongside Bernard Blin (France), Bill Starr (USA), Kevin Marron (Ireland), and Noel Ryan (Ireland). The group all smile for the camera while Collinson, with his distinctive sideburns, stares up at Johnson. In 1963 Collinson made the documentary The One-Nighters of the Royal Showband, with Brendan Bowyer, on tour. It was screened at the Cork Film Festival in 1963, receiving a Certificate of Merit. Following this Collinson went on to make Up the Junction (1967) and the now-legendary The Italian Job (1969) starring Michael Caine. Collinson also directed the war film The Long Day’s Dying (1968) starring the English actor David Hemmings who also came to the film festival in the 1970s. Around the time of this photo, dated 1971, Collinson has just finished the British thriller Straight On till Morning (1972) starring Shane Briant and John Clive, both of whom were in Cork for the film festival in the early 70s. The Irish Film & Television Network (IFTN) site notes that Collinson (1936-1980) started out working as a senior floorman at RTÉ and was originally making a TV commercial for the Royal Showband, with cameraman Robert Monks, before persuading the band to commit to a documentary. Monks, who passed away in 2012, also worked with Cork-born Louis Marcus on his Award-nominated short films Páistí ag Obair (Children at Work) (1973) and Conquest of Light (1975). Monks began his film career working as a film technician with the Irish National Film Institute and continued to collaborate with them throughout his life. A highlight of his career is the documentary on Irish film production Memories in Focus (1996) with Peter Canning, which drew on the Liam O'Leary collection from the National Library. Player and Wills were friends of the film festival and supported it on occasion with a development grant. While this picture appears to be taken at the festival club we know that Player and Wills sometimes held a reception for the festival at their factory headquarters on Dublin’s South Circular Road. The factory was constructed in 1935 for Player and Wills tobacco until its closure in 2005 when the company moved out of Ireland. The Player Wills site is regarded as one of the last remaining quality development sites in the city centre and, as of May 2020, is being considered for redevelopment into c. 400 new homes.    Both Vicki and Ann Michelle are English actors. Vicki Michelle (1950-), on the right in this photo, is best known for her work in the BBC television series ‘Allo ‘Allo. She has an extensive television and stage career appearing on Celebrity Masterchef (2008), Emmerdale (2007-2009), I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! (2014). She has also appeared on the Irish sketch show The Mario Rosenstock Show (2012). Michelle played alongside her sister, Ann Michelle (1952-), in The Virgin Witch (Ray Austin, 1971) which was rejected by the British Board of Film Censors before being passed with an X-rating. The cut version was released in 1972 around the time of this photograph. Ann Michelle also had a small role in the British horror-cult film Psychomania (aka The Death Wheelers) (Don Sharp, 1973) starring the Academy Award-winning George Sanders and Beryl Reid. Sanders (1906-1972) died by suicide soon after completing Psychomania. Donovan, holding a festival brochure dated 1972, is smiling broadly as he reaches out to shake Audley’s hand. Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. Donovan was also an actor and a beloved teacher at the Presentation Brothers College in Cork, where he taught for almost 40 years, and whose theatre is named after him. In 2008 the Everyman, in association with Collins Press, published Dan Donovan: An Everyman’s Life to mark his 80th birthday. He died, age 92, in 2008. At the time of this picture, in 1972, Maxine Audley (1923-1992) had just completed her final film role in Running Scared (David Hemmings, 1972). Running Scared was directed and co-written by David Hemmings who also came to the Cork Film Festival during the seventies. Audley was an English stage and film actor who consistently worked in theatre to high acclaim. She toured with the Old Vic and worked in the West End and Stratford with John Gielgud, Kenneth Tynan, and Peter Brook. Audley also worked in television, radio and over 20 films, including Charlie Chaplin’s satirical comedy A King in New York (1957), which also starred the English actor Dawn Addams who came to the Cork festival in its early days. They are both standing in front of a promotional poster for the Harp Lager-sponsored Cork Film Festival and smiling at the camera. Asher has become well known in recent years for her writing, business and charity work. However she had a prodigious career in film, theatre, radio and television since she was a young child. Her television work in England is extensive and includes Brideshead Revisited, Miss Marple, New Tricks, and A Voyage Round My Father with Laurence Olivier. Her filmography includes Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowksi, 1970) (with music by Cat Stevens), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert, 1966) with Michael Caine, and the British sitcom The Old Guys. At the time of this picture, marked 1972, Asher starred in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (Waris Huessein, 1972) where she played the part of Jane Seymour. The personal life of Asher was of great interest to the British media when she was engaged to the Beatle Paul McCartney, whom she met when she was 17. However she broke off her engagement some years later, age 22, after finding him in bed with someone else. She later married the satirical cartoonist Gerald Scarfe in 1981. As well as being a shareholder in the satirical magazine, Private Eye, Asher has written many books including best-selling novels and lifestyle books with a particular interest in baking. Her range of kitchenware is sold in Poundland in the UK and in Dealz in Ireland.
