Title A name given to the resource Taoiseach Jack Lynch and Lord Mayor Seán Casey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Taoiseach, Jack Lynch, Lord Mayor, Seán Casey Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor Seán Casey walking with Jack Lynch who would have been Taoiseach at the time of this photo in 1966. They walk down a narrow corridor closely flanked either side by young sea cadets in full uniform. This is a rare photo of Seán Casey in the archive; he was an Irish Labour Party politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork on three occasions: in 1956, 1962, and 1966 as in this photo. He was elected to Dáil Éireann as a Labour Party TD for Cork on four occasions before his untimely death in 1967, age 45. He had a memorable meeting with President John F Kennedy in 1963 when the President came to Cork. They travelled to the Cork City Hall in an open-top car and he gave a speech of which Kennedy noted “Once again I’m reminded that the Irish have not lost their ability to speak.” Within four years of their meeting both President Kennedy and Seán Casey would be dead. ('The Proud Son', Irish Independent, 15.06.2013) In this photo Casey walks alongside local man, Jack Lynch, who was born in Cork in 1917. Lynch went to school in the North Mon and his sporting prowess encouraged employers to take him on. He started off working with the Civil Service in Cork before training to be a lawyer and moving to Dublin to work at the District Court, alongside playing for the Dublin Football Club who won their first Dublin Senior Football Club Championship in 1944 on his timely arrival. Lynch was called to the bar and left the Civil Service in 1945 before being approached to declare for Fianna Fail in the 1946 by-election in Cork. He declined as his friend ‘Pa’ McGrath was standing (McGrath features in this archive on a number of occasions) but it instigated an interest in politics for Lynch who would contest elections for the coming years and work successfully with McGrath in the Dáil. Lynch would go on to serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. He was involved in the dismissal of four ministers during the Arms Trial of May 1970, including Charles Haughey, Neil Blaney, Kevin Boland and Michael Moran. Presciently he noted that one of the difficulties dealing with the British is that they are not very well acquainted with the issue of the North and he tried to address it with the British Prime Minister Edward Heath in 1971. Lynch loved sport and would credit it with teaching him how to be part of a team and how to cope with victory and defeat. We can see how the vagaries of his life fluctuated as with any match and his is a legacy that prevails in the history of Cork and beyond. Koval, on the left with glass in hand, is smiling directly at the camera while Breen is turned towards his companion. Kazma is wearing a light-coloured satin dress accessorised with a glass bead necklace. Her dark hair is tied up and she is smiling broadly. The photo, marked with the details of a London-based photographer, was probably taken in London at a reception held by the London Friends of Cork at the Martini Terrace. The journalist Koval was a frequent guest of the festival. He was a respected film critic who had a positive impact on the public representation of the festival during the 1960s. He attended international film festivals, including Cannes, Berlin, Locarno in Switzerland, and Cork, and his reviews were published in publications from Germany, France, Switzerland, and America. Koval always presented Cork in a most congenial fashion and was instrumental in keeping Cork on the radar of the international press until his death in 1970. Byrne is standing next to Peters who is sitting on a beer key, wearing a white fur jacket over a dark dress, and drinking a pint of Guinness. On her right O’Shaughnessy, in a long white dress, poses decorously holding onto the large promotional umbrella. Grace O’Shaughnessy was a top Irish model in the 1960s based in Dublin. In 1966, when working in the Lebanon as a secretary, she was named as the ‘Ideal Woman of Europe’ in an Italian competition. She worked with the fashion designers Sybil Connolly, Ib Jorgensen and Nellie Mulcahy. She returned to Ireland and set up a modelling agency, as well as working as a fashion TV presenter for RTÉ during the 1970s and 1980s. She has been an ambassador for Women’s Aid, and for Third Age which is dedicated to the well-being of older people. Her companion in this picture is Mollie (sometimes known as Molly) Peters born in 1939. Peters was the stage name of Vivien Humphrey, who grew up in Suffolk, England. She started out as a model for men’s magazines but achieved cult cinema status for appearing as the sensuous Nurse Fearing, opposite Sean Connery's 007, in the first Thunderball (Terence Young, 1965). Thomas Pearse Leahy was Lord Mayor of Cork in 1969 which corroborates the date of this photo and makes Geeson age 21 years old when she came to visit Cork. Leahy was a member of the Labour party and served one term of office as Lord Mayor in Cork. During the Northern Ireland troubles, Sinn Féin organised a march through the city, led by the Thomas Ashe Piper’s Band, and placards saying “Cork Bleeds for Derry” and “Cork Supports its Northern Brothers”. Following the death of nine-year-old Patrick Rooney in Belfast, Lord Mayor Pearse Leahy said that Cork could offer refuge and accommodate 1,000 children from Northern Ireland trouble spots. The actor Judy Geeson (1948-) was a popular English film, television, and stage actor who began her career with television work such as in The Newcomers from 1965 to 1967 and Poldark in the mid-1970s. However it was her role in To Sir, With Love (James Clavell, 1967), age 18, opposite Sidney Poitier that secured her place in film history. Her filmography includes 10 Rillington Place (Richard Fleischer, 1971) with Richard Attenborough, the notoriously panned Carry on England (Gerald Thomas, 1976), and a supporting role in The Eagle Has Landed (John Sturges, 1976) alongside Michael Caine, Donald Sutherland, and Jenny Agutter. Geeson is the sister of Carry On and Bless This House actor Sally Geeson (1950-). Judy Geeson was married to Sean Kenny, the Irish theatre designer, in 1969, until his sudden death in 1973, age 43. His head is lowered as he attends to the signing, his distinctive dark hair swept to the right with sideburns framing his lowered face. A few children look towards the camera and catch its attention. Bernard Geary (1934-) is a Cork musician, composer, and teacher, born in Gurranabraher where his parents ran a grocery shop. He studied music at the University College Cork during the 1950s and was encouraged in his compositions by Professor Aloys Fleischmann. His early compositions include work for the RTÉ String Quartet (String Quartet No.1, 1960), the Cork Symphony Orchestra (Provocation, 1960), and the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra (Amran Dochais, 1963) as well as vocal and choral works and incidental music for radio. Geary composed a nine-movement Mass of Saint Finbarr for tenor, choir, and organ in 1973 which was first performed at the Church of St. Francis in Cork with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film Festival Choir. It was commissioned by the Cork Film Festival and we might imagine that this photo is probably taken after the premiere of the Mass in June of that year. Given this, while this photo is marked ‘1970s’ we might pin its date down to 1973 or 1974 when he also conducted his mass for the festival. In 1975 Geary conducted the Mass of Saint Patrick which was composed by Philip Green. Geary was commissioned to compose Celebration of Cork for the opening of Cork 800 in 1985 which marked the anniversary of the founding of the city. The work was based on texts drawn from various writings including Edmund Spenser, Seán Ó Faoláin, and the Cork poet Father Prout (Francis Sylvester O’Mahony) and was revived for the Cork Choral Festival in 2018 (David Wright, wrightmusic.net; Cathy Desmond, Cork Examiner, 17.04.2018). Both men are in dress suits accessorised with bow-ties. Jones on the left, with his trademark eye-patch, is shown in profile shaking the hand of Peter Barry. Jones was a Dublin business man, and a striking figure of 1970s Ireland when he stood by the then Taoiseach Charles Haughey during the 1970 'Arms Trial'.  Peter Barry, also in profile, is leaning towards Jones as he passes over a silver platter which glistens in the light of a camera flash. Born in Blackrock, Cork,  Barry (1928-2016) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1970 to 1971. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1969 and would go on to serve at eight successive elections including a stint as deputy leader under Garret Fitzgerald in 1979, Minister for the Environment from 1981 to 1982 and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1982 to 1983. It was as Minster for Foreign Affairs that he was involved in the negotiations of the Anglo-Irish Agreement and bore witness its signing in 1985. Seemingly it was Peter Barry’s leadership during this time that ensured British reluctance was overcome during the negotiations – an accord that will forever be associated with him. He retired after the 1997 general election and his seat was taken over by his daughter Deirdre Clune. However it is as tea-maker that many Corkonians remember Peter Barry. His legacy as one of Cork’s most successful businessmen, taking over the tea business established in 1901 by his grandfather James J. The panel is part of a 1970 symposium for the Cork Film Festival. The five panellists are sitting in a semi-circle on the stage in front of long-armed microphones, and include an unidentified priest on the far right sitting next to Long. Jugs of water and ashtrays are placed on the wooden tables in front of them and they all appear to be listening attentively to a speaker off-camera. Bunny Carr is sitting on the far left, hands folded at his chin, looking to his left across the stage. Born in Dublin, Bernard ‘Bunny’ Carr (1927-2018) was a popular RTÉ television presenter during the 1960s and 1970s. He also founded Carr Communications which is said to have trained six of Ireland’s Taoisigh (prime ministers). However it is as a television host of popular television shows that he is fondly remembered including, Teen Talk, The Politicians, Going Strong, and most famously the quizmaster of Quicksilver, where he was accompanied by the musical cues of organist Norman Metcalfe, which made its debut in 1965. (‘Bunny the man who stopped the lights – then showed politicians how to deal with life in spotlight’, Irish Times, 21.09.2018.)  Wolf Mankowitz (1924-1998), sitting on the right in this picture wearing a white shirt, with a cigarette in hand, was an award-winning English screenwriter and author known for his novels, plays and screenplays. He was of Jewish descent, born in the East End of London. However, following altercations with the English revenue, he moved to Ireland to avail of Charles Haughey’s generous tax policy towards artists and settled in Cork in 1971. Mankowitz was a successful screenwriter in the 1950s and wrote screenplays for his own works and adapted others including A Kid for Two Farthings (Carol Reed, 1953) and The Millionairess (Anthony Asquith, 1960) starring Sophia Loren and Peter Sellers. He was one of the screenwriters on the first James Bond film Dr No (Terence Young, 1962) but asked for his name to be removed from the credits as he thought it poor; he also collaborated on the Bond movie Casino Royale (Martin Campbell, 1976). In 1972 Mankowitz wrote and directed The Hebrew Lesson, starring Milo O’Shea, Patrick Dawson and Harry Towb (who also appears in this archive). Set in Cork in 1921, during the War of Independence, it is about the friendship between an IRA man escaping pursuit from the Black and Tans, and an elderly man at a synagogue. He wrote the screenplay having being told the story about an IRA man hiding in a small synagogue in Dublin’s Lennox Street and it was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Interestingly the Guardian newspaper reported that the British M15 kept a security file on Mankowitz for more than a decade suspecting that he was a possible communist agent following his marriage to Ann Seligmann, in 1944, as she was a communist party member. The investigation was dropped when the M15 informant insisted that Mankowitz’s leftwing sympathies had disappeared noting that “He comes to the college every morning with a copy of the Times.” (Alan Travis, The Guardian, 26.08.2010.) She is resting her chin on her gloved hands as she smiles for the camera. The photo is signed in blue pen with a dedication to the former festival director Dermot Breen: To Dermot, with warm regards from June Thorburn. Born in Karachi, British India, Thorburn was a popular English actor whose work included The Pickwick Papers (Noel Langley, 1952), Orders are Orders (David Paltenghi, 1954) and Touch and Go (Michael Truman, 1956). She attended a garden party given by President John F Kennedy and Ireland’s president, de Valera, during Kennedy’s visit to Ireland in July 1963. Thorburn died in an air crash, age 36, in 1967. Nameplates and small flags representing various countries decorate the table around which attendees are seated. There are no identifying marks at the back but we recognise the festival director Dermot Breen seated on the Lord Mayor’s left. The Lord Mayor is standing in front of the festival logo as he makes a speech to the assembled guests. The photo frame was marked 1970 which suggests that this is the Fine Gael politician Peter Barry who served as Lord Mayor of Cork that year.
