Thomsett, on the far left with a liqueur glass in hand, looks on as the others chat. Born in 1950 she would have been around 22 years old in this picture. She had just finished the film Straw Dogs (Sam Peckinpah, 1971) starring Dustin Hoffman, but was best known for her role, playing the part of a young girl, in the British drama film The Railway Children (1970) written and directed by Lionel Jeffries. The convivial group are at the festival club, standing in front of a poster advertising the French-Belgian film Rendezvous at Bray (André Delvaux, 1971). Deirdre O’Callaghan is an international harpist and singer; she was married to the Irish athlete Noel Carroll from 1964 until his untimely death in 1998. Carroll was a middle-distance runner who competed for Ireland in the 1964 Toyko Olympics and the 1968 games in Mexico. He was one of the founders of the Dublin Marathon and the winner of the marathon now receives the Noel Carroll Memorial Trophy in his name. While the photo is marked 1968, the Rendezvous at Bray poster allows us to provisionally date the photo after the release of this film. Rendezvous at Bray starred the Danish-French actor Anna Karina (1940-2019) who acted in several films made by her ex-husband Jean-Luc Goddard, including A Woman Is a Woman (1961), My Life to Live (1962), and Band of Outsiders (1964) (with the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1MKUJN7vUk">iconic line-dance scene in the Parisian café with Sami Frey and Claude Brasseur</a>!). Karina also starred in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Chinese Roulette (1976) which he supposedly wrote for her. The archive has some film stills from Fassbinder’s Querelle (1982) with the actor Brad Davis and Günther Kaufmann – the sometimes lover of Fassbinder. Virginia Wetherell (1943-) worked in Hammer horror productions including Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and Demons of the Mind (Peter Sykes, 1972), both of which were released around the time she came to visit the Cork Film Festival in 1972. She also appeared, as the naked actor tempting Malcolm McDowell as Alex, in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange in 1971. She met her future husband, the actor Ralph Bates, on the set of Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde and was married to him from 1973 until his death from cancer in 1991. In 1971 Wetherell opened a vintage clothes shop in London’s Notting Hill, known as Virginia. Virginia was an opulent boutique-style shop that attracted designers and models from all over the world, only shutting down in 2015 when Wetherell (now Bates) turned 72. Redgrave, wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth blouse with glass beads and a broad-brimmed hat, is smiling at Elford as she passes over the award. Behind them we can make out the advertising billboard for the Cork Film International Festival. The award, an engraved bronze-style relief with a Celtic image, is inscribed Film Society Award, Film International 1972. Elford received it for Pass of Arms which he wrote, produced and directed. It featured the English folk singer Sandy Denny (1947-1978) on the soundtrack which was written by Don Fraser. Denny, who was the lead singer of the British folk band Fairport Convention, died a few years later in 1978. Pass of Arms was Peter Elford’s only film as a director. He is credited as a production and location manager for a number of television programmes since then, especially for work during the 1980s and 1990s, including The Long Good Friday (John Mackenzie, 1981), The Lair of the White Worm (Ken Russell, 1988), and King Ralph (David Ward, 1991). Redgrave was an English actor born in 1943. She has an extensive stage, television, and film career and has been nominated for two Golden Globe awards as well as being a two-time Oscar nominee. Her films include the Oscar-nominated Georgy Girl (Silvio Narizzano, 1966), Shine (Scott Hicks, 1996) with Geoffrey Rush, and Bill Condon’s God and Monsters (1998) with Ian McKellan and Brendan Fraser. Around the time of this photo she had just completed the Woody Allen comedy film Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) (1972) starring Woody Allen, Burt Reynolds, Gene Wilder and John Carradine. Title A name given to the resource Lord Mayor Seán O'Leary Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Lord Mayor, Seán O'Leary Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the Lord Mayor of Cork, Seán O'Leary, making a speech at an unidentified location. O'Leary stands at the microphone, notes in hand, and looks out to an unseen audience. Behind him we note the crystal decanter of whiskey which would often accompany a festival award presentation in the early days. The Fine Gael politician Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, and judge who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-1973. He studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. In a career that was distinguished and varied, he noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honours of his life. He died in 2006, age 65. Hayden, in a light-coloured jumpsuit, sits on the edge of a small round table looking down at the enamelled glass-trimmed trophy which sits on a wooden base with an inscribed plaque. As far as we can determine the trophy is engraved Presented by the Commission of the European Communities, and might be presented to the festival as part of the Commission’s support of the festival through their Creative Europe MEDIA programme. Linda Hayden came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers, often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953 she was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976) which was re-released with cuts, as Stalker (Martin Kemp, 1997). Controversially Hayden appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. She would have been too young to see her own movie which was rated X in British cinemas and abroad. The New York Times noted that Baby Love was: “… meaningful and even moving. Baby Love however is basically a chiller, like the dripping water with the initial credits – a drop, a trickle, and a cold flow.” She followed this foray into horror films with Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula (Peter Sasdy,1970) starring Christopher Lee, and The Blood on Satan’s Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971) before making her name with the Confession comedies so beloved of the seventies. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith would be the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith’s wedding – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. A bespectacled Coomber, wearing a light-coloured suit and turtle neck jumper, is shown seated at a table scattered with tableware, an ashtray, and some notes. Behind him a poster for the film The Eagle Has Landed (John Sturges, 1976) is pinned to the paisley-print wallpaper. The Eagle Has Landed was a British war film based on the 1975 book by Jack Higgins. The cast included Michael Caine and Donald Sutherland as well as the English actor Judy Geeson in a supporting role. Geeson also came to the film festival and her image can be found in the archive. We note that this photo is dated 1972, but the correct date might be 1976 or beyond given the release date of The Eagle Has Landed in 1976.
