The convivial group is dressed formally, and Marten, wearing a flower-decorated light-coloured dress, is looking up to Barry who is smoking. A whorl of smoke rises up through the air, crowning Barry, who is turned towards Marten as he listens to her. The picture is provisionally dated ‘1970s’ and would have been taken a few years before Murphy’s death in 1975. We have a particular affection for Seamus Murphy in the archive as he designed the St Finbarr statuette which was handed out as a film festival award for many years. Murphy was an Irish sculptor and stone carver with a studio based at Watercourse Road, in Blackpool, Cork. He was inspired by the writer Daniel Corkery, a teacher at his school, to attend the Cork Crawford School of Art. After receiving a scholarship he later went to Paris to study under the Irish-American sculptor Andrew O’Connor before returning to Cork and opening up his studio. Murphy was commissioned to design the Church of the Annunciation, in Blackpool, Cork, as well a number of unique carvings of statues, gravestones, and monuments around the City and beyond. Many examples of his work can be seen in the cemetery of St Finn Barre’s Cathedral especially in ‘Musicians’ Corner.’ A favourite City monument is his limestone drinking trough for dogs – tucked away at the top of Patrick’s Street under a now empty shopfront at number 121. It is marked Madraí – the Irish word for dogs. A short documentary about Seamus Murphy, <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art </a>(1958) by Louis Marcus, premiered at the festival in 1959. Murphy was married to Maigread, who was a founder of the Cork Arts Society and the Cork Film Society. She was a gifted artist in her own right and designed the well-known Paddy Irish Whisky logo. They met at the Cork Crawford School of Art and went on to have three children, the novelist Orla Murphy, the musician Colm Murphy, and the designer Bebhinn Marten who we see in this picture talking to Peter Barry. Bebhinn Marten is a knitwear designer based in Baltimore, Cork. Her company, Beacon Designs, developed during the 1970s, was one of the few knitwear companies designing and manufacturing in Ireland. However, due to the decline in the Irish woolen industry, the knitwear factory shut down and she converted the factory into a home. A bearded Cohen, wearing a light-coloured utility jacket, is smiling as he chats with Breen. While there are few images of Norman Cohen in the archive, his fingerprints stretch into the archive via the producer Greg Smith, the actors James Mason, Lynda Bellingham, Linda Hayden, and Pamela Stephenson – all of whom were in Cork during the early 1970s. Norman Cohen’s legacy is tied up with a series of risqué X-certificate rated comedies that he worked on such as Confessions of a Pop Performer (1975) and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977) starring Bellingham and Hayden both of whom are in the archive. He also produced and directed The London Nobody Knows (1967) with James Mason, Spike Milligan’s Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (1977), based on the book by Leslie Thomas, and starring Bellingham and Stephenson. Around the time of this picture he had directed Dad’s Army in 1971 based on the popular BBC sitcom of the same name. Cohen's production of Brendan Behan’s Dublin (1966), sometimes misattributed to the BBC, was made by his production company Norcon with the producer Greg Smith – who produced many of his pictures. Written by the Irish director, actor and writer Carolyn Swift, the twenty-nine minute film was narrated by Ray McAnally as Behan, and the soundtrack was supplied by The Dubliners. It was first shown at the Cork Film Festival in September 1966 supporting the MGM film Woman Without a Face (also known as Mister Buddwing) (Delbert Mann, 1966), starring Jean Simmons and James Garner. Rhone, wearing a light-coloured polo neck jumper under a white suit, is standing while talking to a young lady dressed in a dark-coloured satin dress with ruffles at the sleeves. She is seated and looks up at Rhone as he speaks, gesticulating with his right hand and holding a drink in his left. Behind them the room is busy with guests both seated and standing. The photo is undated but other photos of Trevor Rhone in the archive are variously dated 1972 and 1975 and we might put this image at 1975 given its similarity to another archive image. Rhone directed successful movies in both 1972 and 1975. He co-wrote the successful film The Harder They Come (1972) with Perry Henzell which won his first award for best-edited film in Cork that year. He later made Smile Orange (1975) based on an earlier play of his and, while it didn’t have the same impact as his earlier work, it was well received in the Caribbean and Jamaica. It went on to win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. His later filmography includes Milk and Honey (Glen Salzman, Rebecca Yates, 1988) and the Cannes Film Festival ‘favourite’ award winning One Love (Trevor Rhone, 2003), starring the son of Bob Marley – the reggae and hip-hop artist Ky-Mani Marley. Gus Healy, seated on the far left, was an Irish Fianna Fáil politician who would later serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 and 1975 to 1976. He is seated next to the artist Frank Sanquest, in half-rimmed spectacles and wearing his trade-mark dickie bow. Sanquest (1912-2008) was a Cork-born artist who worked for many years as resident set-designer for the Cork Opera House before it burnt down in 1954. He was on the board of the Southern Theatre Group with Dan Donovan and James N. Healy; they often toured with John B Keane plays, starring the Cork actor Michael Twomey who also came to the Cork Film Festival. From 1940 to 1987 Sanquest worked as the Arts Editor for the Cork Examiner and would attend festival press conferences for the paper. The photo only identifies the archivist Liam O’Leary sitting second left, wearing a patterned dickie bow. Liam O’Leary (1910-1992), from Youghal, County Cork, was a film maker, film historian and archivist. He established the Liam O’Leary Archive to rescue Irish film-related objects, stories and ephemera. The collection includes his research into Irish, European and international cinema and film as well as his hand-written notes and correspondence on local events including the Cork International Film Festival. They stand together and chat in the convivial setting of the Ashbourne House garden party. Nicholas, with a glass in hand, was a founding member of the London Friends of Cork and often hosted events at the Martini Terrace in London for the festival. The 1980 film festival programme notes that this group of London-based film people raised thousands of pounds to help the development of the festival. Lester in a light-coloured check suit smiles for the camera. Around the time of this photo, which is dated 1975, Lester had finished The Four Musketeers (1974) starring Oliver Reed and Raquel Welsh, and Royal Flash (1975) with Malcolm McDowell and Oliver Reed. In 1976 he directed the British-American romance and adventure film Robin and Marian starring Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn and the English actor Robert Shaw who also came to the Cork Film Festival in the early seventies. In 2010 Lester donated his large archive of film-related materials to the British Film Institute (BFI). The archive consisting of letters, scripts, notes, and photographs is available to the public via their Special Collections.
