Around the time of this photo, which is dated 1975, Lester had finished The Four Musketeers (1974) starring Oliver Reed and Raquel Welsh, and Royal Flash (1975) with Malcolm McDowell and Oliver Reed. In 1976 he directed the British-American romance and adventure film Robin and Marian starring Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn and the English actor Robert Shaw who also came to the Cork Film Festival in the early seventies. In 2010 Lester donated his large archive of film-related materials to the British Film Institute (BFI). The archive consisting of letters, scripts, notes, and photographs is available to the public via their Special Collections. Crosbie and Breen, on the left of the photo, are meeting festival delegates off the Aer Lingus flight behind them. The photo identifies only the actor and director Lionel Jeffries and Larry Doyle. Lionel Jeffries (1926-2010), with his distinctive moustache, was an English actor, director and screenwriter. He served in the Second World War and was awarded the campaign medal Burma Star for his contribution to the war effort. Jeffries has an extensive filmography but is perhaps best known for The Railway Children (1970) which he wrote and directed. We note that while this photo is dated 1960s it might be 1964 as the Columbia-produced film The First Men in the Moon (Nathan Juran, 1964), starring Jeffries, was screened at the film festival that year on 17 September 1964. Columbia executives were also in attendance and might be included in this picture. The festival director Dermot Breen, with his back to us, is leaning on the table with his right arm, listening to Crosbie and Badal. Grierson, with his distinctive dark-framed glasses, sits at the rear of the group drawing deeply on his cigarette. They are all wearing festival pins on the left lapels of their jackets and have papers strewn on the table before them, along with empty glasses and an ash-filled ashtray. Vasgen Badal was born in 1891, in Tehran, and little is known about him. He was based in Germany and produced a series of films starring popular screen stars including Magda Schneider and Heinz Rühmann who also came to the Cork Film Festival. In 1958 Badal was presented with a statuette of St. Finbarr by Jack Lynch for the film Dreamroad of the World (Hans Domnick, 1958) under his film company 'Badal-Filmproduktion'. He produced a number of films in the thirties and forties including a Nazi propaganda film Roter Nebel (UA, 1941) which was released after the German attack on the USSR in June 1941. Vasgen Badal died in 1959 - a year after this photo was taken. As so little is known about him we are fortunate to have images of him in the archive.  John Grierson was a Scottish documentary maker who coined the term 'documentary' in a review of Robert Flaherty's Moana (1926). Grierson founded the National Film Board of Canada (NFBC) in 1939 and worked there until his resignation in 1945. He lectured at Carleton and McGill University and his lectures at McGill University would attract up to seven hundred students for his classes. In his time Grierson sat on many film festival juries including Cannes, Venice, and Oberhausen; he was jury president in Cork in 1958 when this picture was taken. Grierson died in 1972 and was cremated and his urn, along with that of his brother who had died the previous year, was placed in the sea off the Old Head in Kinsale, County Cork. The now-prestigious Grierson Award, set up in 1972 by the Grierson Trust and UK Film Council, commemorate his life and contribution to documentary film and is awarded annually. The formally dressed pair, hands clasped in a handshake, seem pleased to meet each other. We can make out the festival committee member Dick Beamish entering the shot on the left. Gus Healy is a familiar presence in the archive and worked on the festival committee since its inception in 1956. He was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve Cork as Lord Mayor from 1964 to 1965 an 1975 to 1976.
