Dan Donovan (1926-2008) was a founding member of Cork’s Everyman Theatre and Cork’s cultural legacy owes much to his passion and love of the arts. He was a board director of the Cork Choral Festival as well as the Cork Film Festival. It is possible that this picture was taken in the 1970s when the celebrated Jamaican playwright and film director Trevor Rhone came to Cork with his Jamaican colleagues. By then Rhone had released his successful film, co-written with Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972). His later film, Smile Orange (Rhone, 1975), went on the win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. We can see the back of the audience facing the stage with its empty white screen. The Pavilion Cinema was one of Ireland’s oldest cinemas having opened on Patrick Street in Cork in 1921. It was the first cinema in Cork to show ‘talkies’ with The Singing Fool (Lloyd Bacon, 1928) starring Al Jolson (cinematreasures.org). It shut down in 1989, with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Steven Spielberg, 1989), being its final movie. The back of the photo identifies the actor and filmmaker John Boorman, the former film censor Sheamus Smith, the artist Frank Sanquest and William (Bill) Harpur from RTÉ. Smith, in a light-coloured suit wearing his distinctive glasses, sits at the far left hands clasped in front of him. The filmmaker John Boorman sits beside him. Boorman, wearing a favoured cheque jacket with an open-neck shirt, is glancing down at the table in front of him which is scattered with papers and some drinking glasses. The Cork-born artist Frank Sanquest, in light coloured jacket, sits between Boorman and Harpur. Sanquest worked as the Arts Editor for the Cork Examiner from 1940-1987 and was a familiar presence at the festival. The photo is marked ‘1970s’ but we might suggest it is 1974 since Boorman came to Cork that year for the 19th film festival. He continues to show his films at the festival and his feature Queen and Country had its Irish première in 2014, at the 59th edition of the Cork festival. The four men are all wearing dinner suits accessorised with a bow tie and some decorated with a festival ribbon. We see from the archive that Marcus was presented the Waterford Crystal Award in 1975, for the best Irish film, by Miss Movie Girl Mary Tilson which helps us date this photo. The award was made by the film critics attending the festival and was aimed at encouraging Irish film making and also Government and industrial sponsorship of film making in Ireland. Marcus was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light. Conquest of Light detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. His first documentary, <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), was shown at the Cork Film Festival in 1959 - the same year that Mise Eire (Seoirse Mac Giolla Mhuire) premiered. Marcus often sat on the festival jury, and the 1979 film festival programme notes that Marcus, a member of the shorts jury that year, was “prominent in the efforts to get Government support for Irish film making, so far largely without success.” Pearse Wyse (1928-2009), at the left of the photo, was a Fianna Fáil politician who would serve as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. A firm supporter of Jack Lynch he was a formidable opponent of Charles Haughey and was a member of the so-called ‘Gang of 22’. Disillusioned with Fianna Fáil he went on to found the Progressive Democrats where he held a seat as a TD in the 1987 and 1989 elections. We recognise festival committee members and friends including Gus Healy, Peter Barry, Gerry Jones (with eye-patch), along with Lord Mayor Pearse Wyse at the left of the photo – hands clasped behind his back. Wyse served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1967 and again in 1974. He stands next to the Irish filmmaker Louis Marcus who is holding the Waterford Crystal Award which was awarded for the best Irish film. His first documentary <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art </a>(1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor, Seamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prize winners at the festival for some years. In this photo we see two delegates holding the statuette as designed by Murphy. We note that one of the award recipients, Gerry Duffy, was Manager of 20th Century Fox in Ireland and received his award on behalf of the screenwriter Alvin Sargent for The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds (Paul Newman, 1972). The picture also includes Gerry O'Halloran - who might be the tall man wearing a light-coloured jacket standing behind a low-sized Gus Healy. O'Halloran was from the British Film Institute and participated in workshops for the festival. While the photo is dated '1956' the fashion suggests it was perhaps taken during the 1960s. The convivial group might be seated at a table in the Oyster Tavern on Market Lane in Cork. James Mason (1909-1984) appears a couple of times in the archive. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland. The film was about a German fighter pilot on the Western Front during World War I. Some of the scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Cork where George Peppard as Leutnant Stachel and James Mason, as Generalleutnant Von Klugermann, flew several times under the spectacular railway bridge which spans the River Blackwater. Title A name given to the resource James Mason and Ted O'Brien Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, James Mason, Ted O'Brien Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo, dated 1965, of the English actor James Mason and Ted O'Brien standing side-by-side and both turned to their right in conversation with a lady (we can only see her hands in this photo). Both men are wearing dinner jackets accessorised with a bow-tie and a pin on the left lapel. The light of the camera illuminates Mason, with his grey-flecked hair, and bounces off his cheek bones. His shorter colleague, with dark hair and horn-rimmed glasses, looks on towards the companion to whom they are speaking. James Mason (1909-1984) appears a couple of times in the archive. Born in England he found success in both England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. He was nominated for three Academy Awards for A Star is Born (George Cukor, 1954) with Judy Garland, Lolita (Stanley Kubrick, 1962) and the Silvio Narizzano award-winning film Georgy Girl (1966) with Lynn Redgrave and Charlotte Rampling. Mason was one of the early players in the Hollywood studio production system and negotiated strongly for contractual rights allowing him economic and creative freedom. Interestingly he registered as a conscientious objector during the Second World War.
