Behind them their fellow diners, seated at tables decorated with candelabra, are busy eating at laden tables. Vida Breen (née Daly), wearing a white blouse over a chevron-patterned skirt, is turned to her companion, listening as he talks. She was the wife of the festival director, Dermot Breen, who died unexpectedly in 1978. Vida died almost forty years later in 2017. The Fianna Fáil politician Jack Lynch, seated across from Breen on the far right, is talking to his companion while resting his hands on the table. (We note that while this photo is dated 1960s, the three men in this picture are wearing brightly-patterned wide ties reminiscent of the 1970s, and not of the 1960s which favoured the narrow tie.) During the 1960s Jack Lynch worked as a parliamentary secretary for Eamon de Valera succeeding Sean Lemass in 1966. He would later serve as Taoiseach from 1966 to 1973 and 1977 to 1979. The group all smile for the camera while Collinson, with his distinctive sideburns, stares up at Johnson. In 1963 Collinson made the documentary The One-Nighters of the Royal Showband, with Brendan Bowyer, on tour. It was screened at the Cork Film Festival in 1963, receiving a Certificate of Merit. Following this Collinson went on to make Up the Junction (1967) and the now-legendary The Italian Job (1969) starring Michael Caine. Collinson also directed the war film The Long Day’s Dying (1968) starring the English actor David Hemmings who also came to the film festival in the 1970s. Around the time of this photo, dated 1971, Collinson has just finished the British thriller Straight On till Morning (1972) starring Shane Briant and John Clive, both of whom were in Cork for the film festival in the early 70s. The Irish Film & Television Network (IFTN) site notes that Collinson (1936-1980) started out working as a senior floorman at RTÉ and was originally making a TV commercial for the Royal Showband, with cameraman Robert Monks, before persuading the band to commit to a documentary. Monks, who passed away in 2012, also worked with Cork-born Louis Marcus on his Award-nominated short films Páistí ag Obair (Children at Work) (1973) and Conquest of Light (1975). Monks began his film career working as a film technician with the Irish National Film Institute and continued to collaborate with them throughout his life. A highlight of his career is the documentary on Irish film production Memories in Focus (1996) with Peter Canning, which drew on the Liam O'Leary collection from the National Library. Lester is pointing at his name which is printed on the label of the bottle. Born in 1932, Richard (aka Dick) Lester is best known for his work with The Beatles. Lester’s first short film The Running Jumping & Standing Still Film (1959), with Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers, brought him to the attention of The Beatles who chose him to make A Hard Day’s Night in 1964. His earlier film, It’s Trad, Dad (1962), starred the singing sensation Helen Shapiro who came to the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Lester continued to work with the Beatles directing Help in 1965 which was a commercial success. In 1966 he directed the musical comedy film A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with a screenplay by Michael Pertwee who came to the Cork Film Festival in the early seventies. Interestingly the cinematography on A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was by Nicolas Roeg who went on to become one of England’s influential film directors with Don’t Look Now (1973), The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) starring David Bowie, and The Witches (1990).  Around the time of this photo, which is dated 1975, Lester had finished The Four Musketeers (1974) starring Oliver Reed and Raquel Welsh, and Royal Flash (1975) with Malcolm McDowell and Oliver Reed. In 1976 he directed the British-American romance and adventure film Robin and Marian starring Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn and the English actor Robert Shaw who also came to the Cork Film Festival in the early seventies. Lester's later films include the commercially successful Superman II (1980) and Superman III (1983). For his final film Lester returned to the Beatles with Get Back (1991) – a concert movie following Paul McCartney on his 1989-1990 World Tour. In 2010 Lester donated his large archive of film-related materials to the British Film Institute (BFI). The archive consisting of letters, scripts, notes, and photographs is available to the public via their Special Collections. Title A name given to the resource Drive-in movie theatre Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Drive-in Description An account of the resource This is a colour publicity photo from the Irish Examiner for the 51st Cork Film Festival in 2006. It shows an outdoor drive-in movie theatre with a large outdoor screen and a parking area full of cars facing the screen. The screen shows the actor Anthony Hopkins in a scene from the 1991 blockbuster movie The Silence of the Lambs directed by Johnathan Demme. The glow of the screen lights up the parking lot, while in the back-ground the city lights twinkle in the dark. Drive-in movie theatres have been around since the 1920s with the first one being patented in America in the 1930s. With the rise of car ownership in the 1940s and 1950s, drive-in theatres became popular ways for families to watch movies, especially in rural areas. They were also great places for young couples to meet and date, as we saw in the movie Grease (Randal Kleiser, 1978). With the advent of home entertainment and real estate costs, drive-in attendance declined from the 1970s through to the late 1990s. However, their retro-nostalgic appeal created a mini-boom in America which ebbs and flows, dictated by economics (car use, price of oil), access to cinema via online streaming, or coronavirus pandemic.  Ireland’s first drive-in cinema, Movie Junction, was based at Carrigtwohill in Cork for almost ten years, until its closure in 2019. However, with the advent of the coronavirus pandemic, drive-in cinemas are making a come-back as patrons can enjoy a movie while maintaining social distancing. In 2020, Iran had its first post-revolution drive-in film, showing Exodus by the Iranian filmmaker Ebrahim Hatamikia. Hatamikia’s drama movie was due to be released in theatres around Iran in March 2020 but, due to the pandemic, it went directly to online screening before hitting the big outdoor screen under the iconic Milad tower in the capital Tehran. And, much like drive-in cinemas have always done, patrons sat in their cars, albeit having been sprayed with disinfectant in this case, and listened to the movie via their FM car radio. While the photograph is not dated we might guess it was taken during the early tenure of his presidency in the fifties, during which time Patrick McGrath served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1952-1955. De Valera stands on a podium in front of 31 South Mall in Cork, where the London Assurance Corporation 1720 had their Cork Branch. On-lookers look out from the office windows down at the events below. Above we can see the windows of the local accountancy firm Lantry & Co. Uniformed soldiers stand in rows in front of the podium, their right arm slightly raised at their hip bearing arms. De Valera is accompanied on his right by Lord Mayor, Patrick McGrath, and various dignitaries including Dermot Breen and the then president of University College Cork, Alfred O'Rahilly (1884-1969). The academic O'Rahilly (1884-1969) briefly served as a politician (1943-1954) but was best known for his presidency of the University College Cork from 1943 to 1954. A Sinn Féin supporter, O'Rahilly was interned in Spike Island prison in Cork in 1921 for his political writings. In his capacity as President of the University, he would work closely with the Trade Unions and initiated workers' education courses during the late 1940s. On the death of his wife in 1955, he became a priest, and later Monsignor, and would be awarded the Pontifical Order of Saint Gregory the Great by Pope Pius XII which is the highest distinction that can be awarded to a layman by the Catholic Church. The Irish Times noted that he was 'imperious and some considered him comical, but he silenced his detractors with outstanding intellect and scholarship' (06.10.1998). The same Irish Times article records that O'Rahilly contemplated a multi-volume life of Christ prompting his colleague Mgr Padraig de Bruin to observe that 'a life of O'Rahilly by Christ would be much more interesting.' A building at the university has been dedicated to him since 1998. Language A language of the resource English, eng Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English actor Imogen Hassall with Lord Mayor Seán French, his wife Patricia French, festival director Dermot Breen and Keith Hunt – a representative from Guinness. They are standing at the ribbon of the Harp-sponsored festival club and are possibly about to open the Club. The Lord Mayor, wearing his chain of office, stands at the centre of the group flanked by his wife Patricia, in a frill-trimmed light-coloured dress, and the actor Imogen Hassall in a light-coloured lace gown. Imogen Hassall had a brief prolific film and television career in the 1960s and early 1970s. Her filmography includes Carry on Loving (Gerald Thomas, 1970) with Sid James, Joan Sims and Kenneth Williams, El Condor (John Guillermin, 1970), and a handful of horror movies including the Hammer production When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (Val Guest, 1970), and Incense for the Damned (Robert Hartford-Davis,1972) with Patrick Macnee and Peter Cushing. By the time she came to Cork in 1977 her film career had petered out before her final film role in the James Bond spoof Licensed to Love and Kill (Lindsay Shonteff) in 1979. Hassall had a turbulent personal life and died by suicide in 1980, age 38. Her visit to Cork in 1977 caused a kerfuffle with her hosts: when she declared she was bored she was apparently ‘sent home’ on an early flight and the press of the day had a field day with headlines such as the ‘Cork Hassall hassle.’ (Evening Press, 10.06.1977.)
