A large crowd, held back by two uniformed guards, jostle for a glimpse of the stars. James Mason (1909-1984) was an English actor who found success in England and Hollywood from the 1950s through to the 1980s starring in more than 100 films. Around the time of this picture, Mason was making the war film The Blue Max (John Guillermin, 1966) which was shot at Ardmore Studios and filmed in various locations around Ireland.  Some of the aerial warfare scenes were shot at the Carrickabrack Viaduct in Fermoy, Co. Cork where James Mason, as General von Klugermann, flew several times under the spectacular railway bridge which spans the River Blackwater. The American actor Carroll Baker, who was in Cork in the same year as Farina, played the part of ‘Baba Yaga’ – a middle-aged seductress who ultimately controls the main character Valentina, played by Isabelle De Funès, through a doll that she gives her. Baba Yaga was based on the graphic stories written by the Italian Guido Crepax who is famous for his ‘Valentina’ series of books. Crepax is also a keen wargamer and is the author of the first wargames to be published in Italy. Jane Asher, on the left of the photo, is an English actor, writer and businesswoman with a particular interest in baking. She has worked in film, theatre, radio and television since she was a young child. Her filmography includes the under-rated Deep End (Jerzy Skolimowksi, 1970) (with music by Cat Stevens), Alfie (Lewis Gilbert, 1966) with Michael Caine, and the British sitcom The Old Guys. At the time of this picture, marked 1972, Asher starred in Henry VIII and His Six Wives (Waris Huessein, 1972) where she played the part of Jane Seymour. Asher is a shareholder in the magazine Private Eye and has written many books including best-selling novels and lifestyle books. Born in Dublin she is the daughter of the actor Maureen Cusack and the actor Cyril Cusack. Most recently she was the winner of the Irish Times Theatre Award for Best Actress for Our Few and Evil Days in 2015. Infamously he would throw you out of his bar, located at the top of a somewhat dilapidated staircase, if you took a call on your phone or caused him consternation in any way. O’Donnell died in 2019 attracting warm tributes from Cork and beyond. Francesca Annis is an English film and stage actor born in 1945 who began acting when she was a teenager. She has a prolific film career and films include Cleopatra (Joseph Mankiewicz,1962) when she was age 16, with Elizabeth Taylor; Krull (Peter Yates, 1983), Dune (David Lynch, 1984) and the directorial debut by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon (1986). At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) directed by the Polish-French film director Roman Polanski, whose wife, Sharon Tate, had been murdered recently in Hollywood by the Charles Manson family.  Annis is shown in this picture with Ferdy Mayne, who also worked with Polanski in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate whom Polanski married the following year. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams, who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. Suzanna Leigh, standing on the right in a light-coloured dress, also starred in Hammer horror films during the early seventies including The Deadly Bees (Freddie Francis, 1967) and Son of Dracula (Freddie Francis, 1974) starring Ringo Starr, earning her a cult following amongst horror fans. Her personal life was of great interest to the press of the day and her boyfriends included the actors Richard Harris, Steve McQueen, and Michael Caine. Leigh’s Hollywood career was cut short due to a union row about foreign actors in Hollywood and she would return to England. In 2000 she published her memoirs, Paradise, Suzanna Style, where she describes her encounters with various film stars and directors including Roman Polanski, Peter Finch and Otto Preminger - who also came to the Cork festival with his film St Joan (1957). Redgrave, wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth blouse with glass beads and a broad-brimmed hat, is smiling at Elford as she passes over the award. Behind them we can make out the advertising billboard for the Cork Film International Festival. The award, an engraved bronze-style relief with a Celtic image, is inscribed Film Society Award, Film International 1972. Elford received it for Pass of Arms which he wrote, produced and directed. It featured the English folk singer Sandy Denny (1947-1978) on the soundtrack which was written by Don Fraser. Denny, who was the lead singer of the British folk band Fairport Convention, died a few years later in 1978. Pass of Arms was Peter Elford’s only film as a director. He is credited as a production and location manager for a number of television programmes since then, especially for work during the 1980s and 1990s, including The Long Good Friday (John Mackenzie, 1981), The Lair of the White Worm (Ken Russell, 1988), and King Ralph (David Ward, 1991). Redgrave was an English actor born in 1943. She has an extensive stage, television, and film career and has been nominated for two Golden Globe awards as well as being a two-time Oscar nominee. Her films include the Oscar-nominated Georgy Girl (Silvio Narizzano, 1966), Shine (Scott Hicks, 1996) with Geoffrey Rush, and Bill Condon’s God and Monsters (1998) with Ian McKellan and Brendan Fraser. Her brown hair falls in curls around her shoulders as she smiles up at the camera, resting her chin on her left hand. Behind her the lattice-work on the walls, similar to other images in the archive, indicate that this is possibly the Cork film festival club. Carol Cleveland was born in London in 1942 and lived in America for some years before returning to London to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 1960. She worked in television and film in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including work with Spike Milligan and the Two Ronnies, before regular work on the Monty Python’s Flying Circus series earned her the sobriquet ‘the seventh Python’. Title A name given to the resource Signed photo of Laurence Harvey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Laurence Harvey, Wolf Mankowitz Description An account of the resource This is a signed black and white publicity photo of the Lithuanian-born English actor and director Laurence Harvey (1928-1973). It shows Harvey, in a dark polo neck jumper, looking directly at the lens of the camera. The photo is signed and dedicated to the former festival director Dermot Breen: To Dermot Breen, with thanks & affectionate good wishes, Laurence Harvey. Harvey's extensive filmography includes The Manchurian Candidate (John Frankenheimer, 1962) with Frank Sinatra and Janet Leigh; Life at the Top (Ted Kotcheff, 1965); and narration for the Soviet film Tchaikovsky (Igor Talankin, 1969). Around the time of his visit to the Cork festival, Harvey starred in Escape to the Sun (Menahem Golan, 1972) and The Deep (Orson Welles, 1970) which was an unfinished film starring Harvey and Jeanne Moreau. When Harvey died in 1973 it ended any chance of the picture being finished. One of Harvey's final commitments was to film Cockatrice (1963), a satirical novel about filmmakers by Wolf Mankowitz, which was never made. Wolf Mankowitz was also a visitor to the festival during the 1960s and 1970s. Clouds in varying shades of blue and white reach out across the screen of the sky and there are slight variations of distortion across the image as if viewed through a lens. Festival information is noted at the top and bottom of the programme in white and red font on the black background. The back cover is an advertisement for Murphy’s Irish Stout (the main festival sponsors). The black and white photographic image is of a cinema screening where a young lady, dressed as a cinema usher, is selling refreshments to the audience. She is wearing a black dress with a white lace collar and a large satin bow to the front, together with a white frilled apron; she sports a bob-style hair cut clipped back with a smaller ribbon. Her usherette tray, hanging from a string around her neck, is laden with hyper-realised Murphy’s pint glasses, filled to the brim with black Murphy’s cream-topped stout. The 2001 programme is a soft card-bound programme measuring 21cm x 29.5cm. The spine is glue-bound and it has 132 numbered pages. Note: An article on page 9, credited to the Festival Team 2001, speaks of the then-recent September 11th atrocity and how it affected cinema culture and how images themselves became problematic as a result.
