The small group of five sit on a leather-covered high-backed bench, and smile for the camera. While some faces are familiar to us from the archive they remain unidentified and the only jury member identified in the photo is the Irish writer, broadcaster and cineaste Ciaran Carty. Carty was deputy editor of The Sunday Independent (1961-65) before becoming arts editor and chief critic for The Sunday Tribune (1985-2011). His books include a two-volume biography of the artist Robert Ballagh (Magill, 1986), Confessions of a Sewer Rat: A Personal History of Censorship and the Irish Cinema (New Island Books, 1995) and Writer to Writer – the Republic of Elsewhere (Lilliput Press, 2019), with interviews by Carty of great writers including Saul Bellow, Norman Mailer, and Seamus Heaney. Carty was the director and curator of the annual Hennessy Literary Awards for new Irish writing and maintained and edited the featured writing in national papers over the years including the Sunday Tribune, Irish Independent, and finally The Irish Times. However, following lack of sponsorship after Hennessy withdrew in 2018, New Irish Writing ceased operation in April 2020. In 2008 Carty received the RAAM Support and Service to the Film Industry Award in recognition for his contribution to the Irish film industry. Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the English film producer Greg Smith in conversation with the Irish producer Noel Pearson and Ciara Scott. Given the background décor of Harp Lager-sponsored umbrellas, we might guess that this picture was taken at the festival club. Greg Smith, in a light-coloured jacket on the far right, has his back turned to us as he chats with his companions. While the identity of Pearson and Scott (whose name cannot be verified) (perhaps Ciarín Scott?) is noted with a question mark at the back of the photo, this is probably the Dublin-born film and theatrical producer Noel Pearson who worked on the Academy award-winning My Left Foot (Jim Sheridan, 1989) starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Brenda Fricker, and Cyril Cusack. Pearson also produced The Field (Jim Sheridan, 1990) starring Richard Harris, and Dancing at Lughnasa (Pat O’Connor, 1998) with Meryl Streep, Kathy Burke, and Michael Gambon. He originally managed the Dubliners before moving into theatre and becoming the artistic director of the Abbey Theatre where he staged Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa, before adapting it to film in 1998. His production company, Ferndale Productions, also produced The Secret Scripture (Jim Sheridan, 2016), based on the novel by Sebastian Barry, and starring Rooney Mara and Vanessa Redgrave. The film producer Greg Smith was behind a series of X-rated successful movies during the 1970s including Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). His collaborations with the Irish director Norman Cohen also include Spike Milligan’s war memoirs: Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall (Norman Cohen, 1973) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham and Pamela Stephenson, both of whom are in the archive. (This photo is dated 1960 but we might guess that it is closer to the 1970s given other images of him in the archive.) In the background we can just about identify the distinctive lattice fencing of the festival club together with the distinct signage for Harp Lager who sponsored the club. The back of the photo, marked 1960s, identifies the guests as ‘Brendan Landwells and Clare’. This is an early photograph of the Cork-born artist and journalist Sanquest, taken in the 1960s. As with other photographs of him in the archive he is wearing his trademark dickie bow but has yet to succumb to wearing glasses. The bespectacled actor David Kossoff stands next to him and appears to be peering around Sanquest who is smiling at the camera holding aloft a plate. The actor Margaret Rose Mount, in a leopard-skin coat draped around her bare shoulders, is smiling broadly while her unidentified companion, on the far right of the photo, looks towards Sanquest and his plate. Behind them we can just about make out a promotional poster for Harp Lager hanging on the wall next to the draped curtains. David Kossoff (1919-2005) was an English actor, writer and raconteur. He was born in East London to Russian-Jewish parents and worked as a furniture designer before becoming an actor. He has many film credits and won a British Academy Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Film for his role in The Young Lovers (Anthony Asquith,1954). He followed this with the Oscar-winning short film The Bespoke Overcoat (Jack Clayton,1956) which was written by Nikolai Gogol and Wolf Mankowitz, who also came to Cork, and The Mouse That Roared (Jack Arnold,1959) starring Peter Sellers and Jean Seberg who came to Cork with the film St Joan (Otto Preminger, 1957). On the television Kossoff was best-known for his role as the hen-pecked husband Alf Larkin in The Larkins (1958). His wife in the series was the English actor Margaret Rose Mount OBE (1915-2001) who is identified in this photo with Kossoff. Mount also acted with Kossoff in the British comedy film Inn for Trouble (CM Pennington-Richards, 1960) which was a spin-off from The Larkins. Mount had an extensive television, film and stage career with film credits including Hotel Paradiso (Peter Glenville,1966) with Alec Guinness and Gina Lollobrigida, and Oliver! (Carol Reed, 1968) with Oliver Reed and Harry Secombe. Her stage credits include the title role of Brecht’s Mother Courage (1977) and Uncle Vanya (1996) with Derek Jacobi at the National Theatre before she retired soon after due to her failing eyesight. We note that David Kossoff was the father of the blues guitarist Paul Kossoff (1950-1976) from the band Free which was responsible for the hit ‘All Right Now’ (1970). Wikipedia notes that the Rolling Stone magazine ranked Paul Kossoff 51st in their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Paul Kossoff’s health was poor due to his drug addictions and he died age 25 from a pulmonary embolism. After his death his father, David Kossoff, spent the rest of his life campaigning fervently against drugs and toured schools with his one-man stage show, The Late Great Paul, about his son’s death and the effect that it had on him and his family.
