Born in 1932 François Truffaut was a French film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film critic. His career spans forty years of filmmaking and in 1959 his autobiographical film The 400 Blows ushered in French New Wave (La Nouvelle Vague) cinema with the rejection of traditional film-making structures. Around the time of this photograph, dated 1973, Truffaut had released Day for Night (1973) which won him an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. His final film was Confidentially Yours (1983) which he made as an homage to his favourite director Alfred Hitchcock. He died a year later, age 52, from a brain tumor and is buried in Paris. Lord Mayor Pat Kerrigan also died young, age 51. He served as Lord Mayor of Cork for the 1973 to 1974 term of office and was a well-regarded Irish politician and trade union official affiliated with the Labour Party. He was nominated to the 13th Seanad by Liam Cosgrave, the then Taoiseach, where he served until 1977. Kerrigan won a seat for the Cork City constituency in the 1977 general election taking his seat that year.  Pat Kerrigan is the father of Cathal Kerrigan who worked as a librarian in University College Cork for many years before his retirement in 2020. Kerrigan recently collaborated with the artist Padraig Robinson on his book Gaze Against Imperialism (Metaflux Publishing, 2019). They are standing close together in conversation. Breen is wearing a festival ribbon marked 'director' and his glasses poke out of his breast pocket. Truffaut, cigarette in hand, is smiling as he talks to Breen. Behind them, the logo for Harp Lager can be seen adorning the umbrellas which are dotted around the outdoor space. Truffaut’s visit to Cork must have been a great coup for the festival. At the time he was one of the foremost film directors in the world with a career that spanned forty years of filmmaking before his untimely death in 1984, age 52. Around the time of this photograph, Truffaut had released Day for Night (1973) which won him an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It was the film that instigated a bitter rivalry between himself and the French director Jean-Luc Godard for its apparent attack on the commercial nature of Godard’s Le Mépris (Contempt), (1963). Interestingly Truffaut’s colleague, the cinematographer Raoul Coutard, and French New Wave stalwart, worked with the director and Guardian journalist, Peter Lennon, to make the documentary Rocky Road to Dublin in 1967. The documentary looked at the modern state of Ireland and in particular its relationship with the Catholic Church. It was banned in Ireland and the Cork Film Festival refused to show it initially but, following its acceptance by the Cannes Film Festival in 1969, Cork was somewhat embarrassed into showing it the following year (albeit in a lunchtime slot which was badly attended due to the festival organizing a free lunch for delegates at the same time in Kinsale – some distance away). Its success, amongst the French Left in particular, caught the attention of international media and it remains an example of French New Wave’s informality via the work of Coutard who was famous for shooting with a handheld camera. The Lord Mayor, wearing his chain of office, stands at the centre of the group flanked by his wife Patricia, in a frill-trimmed light-coloured dress, and the actor Imogen Hassall in a light-coloured lace gown. Imogen Hassall had a brief prolific film and television career in the 1960s and early 1970s. Her filmography includes Carry on Loving (Gerald Thomas, 1970) with Sid James, Joan Sims and Kenneth Williams, El Condor (John Guillermin, 1970), and a handful of horror movies including the Hammer production When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (Val Guest, 1970), and Incense for the Damned (Robert Hartford-Davis,1972) with Patrick Macnee and Peter Cushing. By the time she came to Cork in 1977 her film career had petered out before her final film role in the James Bond spoof Licensed to Love and Kill (Lindsay Shonteff) in 1979. Hassall had a turbulent personal life and died by suicide in 1980, age 38. Her visit to Cork in 1977 caused a kerfuffle with her hosts: when she declared she was bored she was apparently ‘sent home’ on an early flight and the press of the day had a field day with headlines such as the ‘Cork Hassall hassle.’ (Evening Press, 10.06.1977.) The three of them sit in a row and appear to be enjoying a convivial conversation – Patricia French, in a striped dress tied at the neck with a bow, leans over her husband as she chats with President Hillery. She appears to be wearing the Gold Medallion which is worn by Lady Mayoresses; it is circular shaped with twist wire and a hand-engraved Celtic border. The centre portion is decorated with the Cork Arms and a spray of shamrock. The medallion was presented in 1961 by the Cork Jewellers’ Association to the Corporation. Patrick Hillery (1923-2008), on the right of the photo, was a Fianna Fáil politician who served as the sixth President of Ireland from 1976 to 1990. This picture, taken in 1976, would have been taken a few months before he was made President of Ireland in December of that year. He is shown here sitting next to the Fianna Fáil politician, Seán French, who served as Lord Mayor of Cork during his early presidency, from 1976 to 1977. Seán French represented Cork in Dáil Éireann for 15 years and was a trusted confidante of former Taoiseach Jack Lynch; he ran alongside him in the 1969 and 1973 general elections and would benefit from the large transfers from Lynch who had a huge surplus of votes. His father, also called Seán French, also served as both a Fianna Fáil TD and a Lord Mayor of Cork serving seven terms until his early death, age 47, in 1937. In addition to his political duties Seán French sat on the board of Glen Rovers and the Cork County Basketball Board, where he was treasurer.  At his funeral Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, noted that French had made an enormous contribution to public life in Cork. The convivial shot shows Hayden and Breen embracing while posing for the photographer. Hayden, wearing a dark halter-neck dress and holding a packet of 20 Marlboro cigarettes, has her left arm around Breen’s neck. Breen, with a festival ribbon pinned to the lapel of his jacket, smiles for the camera as does Hayden. Hayden came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers, often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham who also came to the festival. Born in 1953 Hayden was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974) and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977) directed by the Irish director Norman Cohen. Around the time of these photos, taken in 1976, she had completed the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976) which was re-released in 1997 with cuts, as Stalker (Martin Kemp, 1997), and the British-German comedy film Queen Kong (Frank Agrama, 1976) starring Robin Askwith with whom Hayden was partnered for some years. The three women are seated on the carriage, each holding a long-stemmed red rose, while Howick, who was the trade director for Guinness group sales, stands with his hand on the wheel of the carriage. This image might have been taken in Dublin where horse-drawn carriages were used as a means of transport up until the 1970s. Carriage driving is usually passed down from one generation to another and they are still a regular sight around Dublin, and a popular tourist attraction in and around St Stephen’s Green and at the Guinness Storehouse. The Lord Mayor, wearing the sterling silver and gold chain of office, is looking down at the mace smiling as he shows it to Bellingham and Hayden. These photos, taken by the same photographer Donal Sheehan, and each of similar size, give us a chance to look at the sterling silver ornamental mace which is one of four possessed by the Cork City Council. The historical information page on the Cork City Council website notes that they are all alike but vary in size. A ceremonial mace is intended to represent an official’s authority and is represented in art as far back as Ancient Egypt. Once used as practical weapons they became increasingly decorative over time and evolved into the civic mace, very similar to the one that we see here in the picture – with a flanged head of ornamental beaded and scalloped bands at the top of the mace, carrying the orb and cross. The original Cork mace is 36 inches long and was made in 1696 by the Cork silver and goldsmith, Robert Goble, with chasing made by a Flemish immigrant goldsmith, Charles Begheagle. Title A name given to the resource Noel Purcell with Josef Locke Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Noel Purcell, Josef Locke, Carmel Dignam Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photograph of the actor Noel Purcell in conversation with the Irish tenor Josef Locke and probably his wife Carmel Dignam. Purcell and Locke, in formal suits, accessorised with a festival ribbon, are huddled together in conversation with Purcell gesticulating with his hand outstretched towards Dignam who looks on, glass in hand. Noel Purcell (1900-1985) had a distinguished career on stage and in film. However he did gain some recognition as a singer for his rendition of The Dublin Saunter, a song composed for him by the songwriter Leo Maguire (1903-1985). Purcell was given the Freedom of the City of Dublin in June 1984, a short time before his death in 1985. Derry-born Joseph McLaughlin, known professionally as Josef Locke, was born in 1917 and was particularly successful for his singing during the 1940s and 1950s. He worked as an Irish Guard and served abroad with the Palestine Police Force, before returning to Ireland to work for the Royal Ulster Constabulary in the late 1930s. He appeared in a small number of films, as himself, including Holidays with Pay (John E Blakeley, 1948) and What a Carry On! (John E Blakeley, 1949). However it is for his singing he is best remembered – in particular for his recordings of Blaze Away, The Town I Loved So Well, and Hear My Song. He had somewhat protracted legal wranglings with the British tax-man over the years – and would successfully appeal various court sentences and demands. In later years Locke was honoured with recognition from the Variety Artists Trust, The Late Late Show, and an award-winning film based on his life, Hear My Song (Peter Chelsom) in 1991, a few years before his death in 1999. Title A name given to the resource Director Richard Lester and Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Richard Lester, The Beatles, Helen Shapiro, Michael Pertwee, Robert Shaw Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the American film director Richard Lester presenting a celebration bottle of Domecq’s cream sherry to the festival director Dermot Breen. Lester is pointing at his name which is printed on the label of the bottle. Born in 1932, Richard (aka Dick) Lester is best known for his work with The Beatles. Lester’s first short film The Running Jumping & Standing Still Film (1959), with Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers, brought him to the attention of The Beatles who chose him to make A Hard Day’s Night in 1964. His earlier film, It’s Trad, Dad (1962), starred the singing sensation Helen Shapiro who came to the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Lester continued to work with the Beatles directing Help in 1965 which was a commercial success. In 1966 he directed the musical comedy film A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with a screenplay by Michael Pertwee who came to the Cork Film Festival in the early seventies. Interestingly the cinematography on A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum was by Nicolas Roeg who went on to become one of England’s influential film directors with Don’t Look Now (1973), The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) starring David Bowie, and The Witches (1990).  Around the time of this photo, which is dated 1975, Lester had finished The Four Musketeers (1974) starring Oliver Reed and Raquel Welsh, and Royal Flash (1975) with Malcolm McDowell and Oliver Reed. In 1976 he directed the British-American romance and adventure film Robin and Marian starring Sean Connery, Audrey Hepburn and the English actor Robert Shaw who also came to the Cork Film Festival in the early seventies. Lester's later films include the commercially successful Superman II (1980) and Superman III (1983). For his final film Lester returned to the Beatles with Get Back (1991) – a concert movie following Paul McCartney on his 1989-1990 World Tour. In 2010 Lester donated his large archive of film-related materials to the British Film Institute (BFI). The archive consisting of letters, scripts, notes, and photographs is available to the public via their Special Collections.
