We recognise some of the delegates from the archive including the film director Terry Gilliam and the actor Linda Hayden, together with the film censor Sheamus Smith and Tom Nicholas from London Friends of Cork. Terry Gilliam, standing at the centre, smiling broadly at the camera with his arm around the shoulder of Linda Hayden, is an actor, screen writer, director and former member of the Monty Python comedy team. He has directed 13 feature films including Brazil (1985), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and most recently The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). At the time of this picture, taken in the 1970s, Gilliam, who started his career as a cartoonist, was the main animator for the award-winnng BBC sketch comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus which ran from 1969 to 1974. His penchant for the surreal and fantastical can be seen in his future film work which often feature black comedy with a twist.  Linda Hayden, seen here next to Gilliam wearing a fur-trimmed coat and smiling at the camera, features heavily in the Cork Film Festival archive. She came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers and was often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953, Linda Hayden was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976). Controversially she appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. The convivial group are shown in a huddle in conversation; Gilliam and his companions are sitting on a table resting up against the wall while Sheamus Smith, arms folded, stands and listens to them. Smith was a producer and director at RTÉ around the time of this photo (1970s) before being appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975. He was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board and was later appointed Irish film censor, going on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State from 1986 to 2002. Smith published his memoir Off Screen (Gill & MacMillan) in 2007. We know Terry Gilliam as part of the Monty Python troupe and the long-running BBC sketch comedy Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1969-1974), which relied heavily on his surreal animation skills. Around the time of this photo in the 1970s, Gilliam had co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail (with Terry Jones, 1975) and soon after directed Jabberwocky (1977), based on Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, and starring Michael Palin. He has been nominated a number of times for an Academy Award for Brazil (1985), The Fisher King (1991), 12 Monkeys (1995), and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). Linda Hayden, on the far left of the photo in a knitted halter-neck dress, and holding a cigarette, came to Cork on a number of occasions and often features in the festival archive photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham, with whom she starred in a series of Confessions movies based on the series of risqué best-selling paperback books by Christopher Wood. Co-produced by Greg Smith and the Irish director Norman Cohen they include Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen,1977) which starred both Bellingham and Hayden. Rhone, resting his chin on his right hand, is seated at the top of the table in a checkered shirt, his lean physique is turned towards his (unidentified) companions at the table who are smiling while looking down at the table. The table is littered with papers, cigarettes, ashtrays, and a pair of sunglasses. Behind them, we note the Press Office poster tacked to the wall, next to a man with a cigarette in his mouth who catches the flash of the camera with a smile. Trevor Rhone was in Cork for his successful film The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972) which he co-wrote with Perry Henzell. (The back of the photo notes that this group includes Perry Henzell, but he isn’t in this picture.) It was the first Jamaican-produced feature film and introduced reggae music to an international audience, becoming a cult hit in the process. Rhone’s later filmography includes Milk and Honey (Glen Salzman, Rebecca Yates, 1988) and the Cannes Film Festival ‘favourite’ award-winning One Love (Trevor Rhone, 2003), starring Ky-Mani Marley – the son of Bob Marley. In addition to his film work, Rhone lectured in Jamaica and various American universities including Harvard; his contribution to Caribbean cinema is profound. Rhone died from a heart attack at the age of 69 in 2009 and is buried in Jamaica. Title A name given to the resource Trevor Rhone and the Jamaican delegation at the Savoy Cinema Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Savoy Cinema, Jamaica, Trevor Rhone, Perry Henzell Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the celebrated Jamaican playwright and film director Trevor Rhone and his colleagues at the Savoy Cinema in Cork. They are walking up the stone steps of the Savoy in the company of a lady identified as Dympna Warren. Warren is turned in conversation towards her companion, in sunglasses and a dark suit, who has his head lowered as he listens to her.  Behind them Trevor Rhone, wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth shirt, is heading up the steps in the company of his colleagues. We can just make out the day-time scene behind them at the doors of the cinema, where a small crowd can be seen milling around. This photo is dated 1972 which was the year that Rhone’s successful film, co-written with Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972), was released. This gritty realist film, in which the Jamaican reggae singer Jimmy Cliff played a lead role, is credited for introducing reggae music and Jamaican culture to a global audience. It was Jamaica’s first homegrown film and arguably its greatest. When it premiered at the 1,500-seat cinema theatre in Kingston, Jamaica, in December 1972, 40,000 Jamaicans turned up. Trevor Rhone (1940-2009) grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, the last child of twenty-three. He went to drama school in England on a scholarship and on his return to Jamaica would instigate a resurgence of interest in Jamaican theatre, in particular with his 1971 play, the comedy Smile Orange. During this time he teamed up with the Jamaican director Perry Henzell to write the now seminal screenplay for The Harder They Come. Rhone made a significant impact on the literature and culture of Jamaica helping to bring it to an international audience. In 1972 he received his first award in Cork for the best-edited film (for The Harder They Come), before travelling to Brixton’s Classic Cinema in London, where he had to stand outside the cinema handing out leaflets in an attempt to woo an audience in. Rhone later made Smile Orange (1975), based on his 1971 play; while it didn’t have the same impact as his earlier film, it was well-received in the Caribbean and Jamaica and went on to win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-73. He studied at the University College Cork before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. Kevin Owens, sitting next to O'Leary in this picture, was born in Charleville; he was a well-known radio performer with radio programmes including Melody from Munster, Songs of the Night, and Music of the Nation. Owens worked with Bernard Geary and gained success with his solo performance in Geary’s Mass of Saint Finbarr on the Aisling record label. For many years Owens was a member of the Holy Cross Church Parish Choir in Charleville and in 1994 he received the Papal honor Benemerenti Medal from the then Bishop of Cloyne Dr John Magee for his services to the parish as a singer. His colleague at this table, Bernard Geary, was born in Gurranabraher, Cork in 1934. He studied music at the University College Cork during the 1950s and was encouraged in his compositions by Professor Aloys Fleischmann. Geary composed the Cork Film Festival-commissioned nine-movement Mass of Saint Finbarr for tenor, choir and organ in 1973 which was first performed at the Church of St. Francis in Cork, with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film Festival Choir. The three stand in a huddle having a conversation, oblivious to the camera, while a young boy in the background catches the picture as it's taken. Hassall came to Cork in 1977 during a time of hiatus in her film career which mostly consisted of bawdy comedies and horror movies. Her filmography includes Carry on Loving (Gerald Thomas, 1970) with Sid James, Joan Sims and Kenneth Williams, El Condor (John Guillermin, 1970), When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth (Val Guest, 1970), and Incense for the Damned (Robert Hartford-Davis,1972) with Patrick Macnee and Peter Cushing. Her final film role was in the James Bond spoof Licensed to Love and Kill (Lindsay Shonteff) in 1979. Hassall had a turbulent personal life and died by suicide in 1980, age only 38. The festival director, Dermot Breen, on the right in this photo, would also die unexpectedly, age 54, in the year following this picture in 1978. They are probably sitting under the Harp Lager-sponsored umbrella of the festival club and are chatting, drinking, and smoking as are the animated guests who sit at tables around them. Jon Finch, at the right of the photo in a leather jacket pulling on a cigarette, was an English film and stage actor born in 1942. He was a handsome in demand actor who achieved some notoriety for turning down plum roles when offered them due to a self-proclaimed lack of ambition, such as the chance to replace Sean Connery and play James Bond in Live and Let Die (Guy Hamilton, 1973) (the part went to Roger Moore instead). In the early 1970s Finch played supporting roles in Hammer Horror productions The Horror of Frankenstein (Jimmy Sangster, 1970) and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) with Dawn Addams, a regular visitor to the Cork Film Festival in its earlier days, with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. But it was for his Shakespearean roles Finch would become well known. Most famously he played Macbeth in Macbeth (aka The Tragedy of Macbeth) (Roman Polanski, 1971) alongside his companion in this picture, Francesca Annis, as Lady Macbeth. Finch also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy (1972) as well the BBC television productions Richard II (1978), Henry IV, parts one and two (1979), and as Don Pedro in the BBC’s Much Ado About Nothing (1984). His final film role was in the historical drama Kingdom of Heaven (Ridley Scott, 2005) alongside Orlando Bloom and Eva Green. Finch died in 2012, age 71. Francesca Annis, chatting to her companion in this picture, is also an English film and stage actor with a prolific film career. At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) with Jon Finch, directed by Roman Polanski, whose wife Sharon Tate had recently been murdered in Hollywood by followers of Charles Manson. The film was financed by the Playboy magazine editor Hugh Hefner as mainstream studios refused to finance it given Polanski’s mental state and yet, despite its critical mauling at the time, the film has gone on to garner plaudits for its somewhat accurate depiction of a bleak violent world. As Polanski notes: … [the film] is violent. But the play is violent. And life is violent too. They are attending a press reception at the Café Royal in London, for the Soviet biopic film Tchaikovsky (Igor Talakin, 1970). Tiomkin and his wife are standing on the left of the photo, holding drinks, while in conversation with Breen and an unidentified colleague. Dimitri Tiomkin (1894-1979) was Ukrainian by birth and trained in Russia and Berlin, before moving eventually to Hollywood where he was best known for his scores for Western films, including work with the directors Frank Capra, Fred Zinnemann, and Alfred Hitchcock amongst others. In all, he received twenty-two Academy Award nominations and won four Oscars including three for Best Original Score for High Noon (Fred Zinneman, 1952), The High and the Mighty (William Wellman, 1954), and The Old Man and the Sea (John Sturges, Fred Zinnemann, 1958) as well as an Oscar for Best Original Song for The Ballad of High Noon. In this image, Tiomkin and his wife are at a reception for the film Tchaikovsky which was a Soviet-American collaboration about the Russian composer Pytor Illyich Tchaikovsky. Tiomkin scored the music for the film which was nominated for an Academy Award in the foreign-language category. It was a tribute by Tiomkin, as a composer, to another Russian composer and was one of the last motion picture films to be scored by him.
