Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972-73. He studied at the University College Cork before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. Kevin Owens, sitting next to O'Leary in this picture, was born in Charleville; he was a well-known radio performer with radio programmes including Melody from Munster, Songs of the Night, and Music of the Nation. Owens worked with Bernard Geary and gained success with his solo performance in Geary’s Mass of Saint Finbarr on the Aisling record label. For many years Owens was a member of the Holy Cross Church Parish Choir in Charleville and in 1994 he received the Papal honor Benemerenti Medal from the then Bishop of Cloyne Dr John Magee for his services to the parish as a singer. His colleague at this table, Bernard Geary, was born in Gurranabraher, Cork in 1934. He studied music at the University College Cork during the 1950s and was encouraged in his compositions by Professor Aloys Fleischmann. Geary composed the Cork Film Festival-commissioned nine-movement Mass of Saint Finbarr for tenor, choir and organ in 1973 which was first performed at the Church of St. Francis in Cork, with Kevin Owens as a soloist and the Cork Film Festival Choir. They are walking up the stone steps of the Savoy in the company of a lady identified as Dympna Warren. Warren is turned in conversation towards her companion, in sunglasses and a dark suit, who has his head lowered as he listens to her.  Behind them Trevor Rhone, wearing a light-coloured cheesecloth shirt, is heading up the steps in the company of his colleagues. We can just make out the day-time scene behind them at the doors of the cinema, where a small crowd can be seen milling around. This photo is dated 1972 which was the year that Rhone’s successful film, co-written with Perry Henzell, The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972), was released. This gritty realist film, in which the Jamaican reggae singer Jimmy Cliff played a lead role, is credited for introducing reggae music and Jamaican culture to a global audience. It was Jamaica’s first homegrown film and arguably its greatest. When it premiered at the 1,500-seat cinema theatre in Kingston, Jamaica, in December 1972, 40,000 Jamaicans turned up. Trevor Rhone (1940-2009) grew up in Kingston, Jamaica, the last child of twenty-three. He went to drama school in England on a scholarship and on his return to Jamaica would instigate a resurgence of interest in Jamaican theatre, in particular with his 1971 play, the comedy Smile Orange. During this time he teamed up with the Jamaican director Perry Henzell to write the now seminal screenplay for The Harder They Come. Rhone made a significant impact on the literature and culture of Jamaica helping to bring it to an international audience. In 1972 he received his first award in Cork for the best-edited film (for The Harder They Come), before travelling to Brixton’s Classic Cinema in London, where he had to stand outside the cinema handing out leaflets in an attempt to woo an audience in. Rhone later made Smile Orange (1975), based on his 1971 play; while it didn’t have the same impact as his earlier film, it was well-received in the Caribbean and Jamaica and went on to win a gold medal at the Cork Film Festival in 1975. Trevor Rhone was in Cork for his successful film The Harder They Come (Perry Henzell, 1972) which he co-wrote with Perry Henzell. (The back of the photo notes that this group includes Perry Henzell, but he isn’t in this picture.) It was the first Jamaican-produced feature film and introduced reggae music to an international audience, becoming a cult hit in the process. Rhone’s later filmography includes Milk and Honey (Glen Salzman, Rebecca Yates, 1988) and the Cannes Film Festival ‘favourite’ award-winning One Love (Trevor Rhone, 2003), starring Ky-Mani Marley – the son of Bob Marley. In addition to his film work, Rhone lectured in Jamaica and various American universities including Harvard; his contribution to Caribbean cinema is profound. Rhone died from a heart attack at the age of 69 in 2009 and is buried in Jamaica. The convivial group are shown in a huddle in conversation; Gilliam and his companions are sitting on a table resting up against the wall while Sheamus Smith, arms folded, stands and listens to them. Smith was a producer and director at RTÉ around the time of this photo (1970s) before being appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975. He was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board and was later appointed Irish film censor, going on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State from 1986 to 2002. Smith published his memoir Off Screen (Gill & MacMillan) in 2007. We know Terry Gilliam as part of the Monty Python troupe and the long-running BBC sketch comedy Monty Python’s Flying Circus (1969-1974), which relied heavily on his surreal animation skills. Around the time of this photo in the 1970s, Gilliam had co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail (with Terry Jones, 1975) and soon after directed Jabberwocky (1977), based on Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll, and starring Michael Palin. He has been nominated a number of times for an Academy Award for Brazil (1985), The Fisher King (1991), 12 Monkeys (1995), and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). Linda Hayden, on the far left of the photo in a knitted halter-neck dress, and holding a cigarette, came to Cork on a number of occasions and often features in the festival archive photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham, with whom she starred in a series of Confessions movies based on the series of risqué best-selling paperback books by Christopher Wood. Co-produced by Greg Smith and the Irish director Norman Cohen they include Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen,1977) which starred both Bellingham and Hayden. She also appeared in horror movies including Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula (Peter Sasdy,1970) starring Christopher Lee, and The Blood on Satan’s Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971). We recognise some of the delegates from the archive including the film director Terry Gilliam and the actor Linda Hayden, together with the film censor Sheamus Smith and Tom Nicholas from London Friends of Cork. Terry Gilliam, standing at the centre, smiling broadly at the camera with his arm around the shoulder of Linda Hayden, is an actor, screen writer, director and former member of the Monty Python comedy team. He has directed 13 feature films including Brazil (1985), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and most recently The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). At the time of this picture, taken in the 1970s, Gilliam, who started his career as a cartoonist, was the main animator for the award-winnng BBC sketch comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus which ran from 1969 to 1974. His penchant for the surreal and fantastical can be seen in his future film work which often feature black comedy with a twist.  Linda Hayden, seen here next to Gilliam wearing a fur-trimmed coat and smiling at the camera, features heavily in the Cork Film Festival archive. She came to Cork on a number of occasions and was a favourite of the photographers and was often photographed with fellow actor Lynda Bellingham with whom she starred in the Confessions series of movies. Born in 1953, Linda Hayden was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977) and the ‘video-nasty’ Exposé (James Kenelm Clarke, 1976). Controversially she appeared, age 15, in the 1968 British drama film Baby Love (Alastair Reid) in which she acted the part of a young girl who seduces her adoptive family after her mother commits suicide. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith was the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith  – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. The three women are each holding a long-stemmed red rose while Beamish, on the right, holds a pint of Guinness. Both Lynda Bellingham and Linda Hayden feature in the archive extensively from their visit to Cork in the 1970s. Hayden, on the far right in this picture, wearing jeans and a white blouse, was best known for her roles in British horror films and sex comedies such as Hammer’s Taste the Blood of Dracula (Peter Sasdy, 1970) starring Christopher Lee, The Blood on Satan’s Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971), Confessions of a Window Cleaner (Val Guest, 1974), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (1977) by the Irish director Norman Cohen. Hayden was the partner of the actor Robin Askwith for some time in the 1970s, and who also starred in the Confessions sex comedy series. Askwith would be the best man at the wedding of Lynda Bellingham and the film producer Greg Smith  – both of whom were at the Cork Film Festival in the 1970s. Bellingham, at the centre of this picture, wearing a long light-coloured dress, worked with her husband Smith and the Irish director Cohen in a number of movies including Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Clare Brough, 1976) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) starring Robin Askwith, Pamela Stephenson and Miriam Margolyes. Bellingham, wearing a light-coloured dress, is shown glancing upwards and smiling as she eats from a napkin-covered dish. Lynda Bellingham (1948-2014) was an English actor, broadcaster and author who was a familiar presence on British television, in particular for her work as lunchtime chat show host on Loose Women between 2007 and 2011 with whom she made more than 300 appearances. She also had a long-standing television career including parts in All Creatures Great and Small and Doctor Who as well as film credits that include Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Clare Brough, 1976) and Stand Up, Virgin Soldiers (1977) directed by the Irish director Norman Cohen. Bellingham will be best remembered for her commercial role as the ‘Oxo mum’ in the long-running series of TV ads selling Oxo gravy, between 1983 to 1999. She also worked in theatre and had a successful run with the touring production of Calendar Girls between 2008 and 2012. Bellingham was married three times and during the 1970s, when she came to Cork, she was married to the film and theatre producer Greg Smith. Smith also came to Cork, and worked with Norman Cohen on the Confessions series of movies. Annis, wearing a cheese-cloth style tunic, is turned to O’Connell chatting while Mayne smiles directly at the camera. O’Donnell, in dark-rimmed glasses, might be the legendary Cork publican Brian O’Donnell of the tiny Hi-B bar on Oliver Plunkett Street in Cork. Infamously he would throw you out of his bar, located at the top of a somewhat dilapidated staircase, if you took a call on your phone or caused him consternation in any way. O’Donnell died in 2019 attracting warm tributes from Cork and beyond. Francesca Annis is an English film and stage actor born in 1945 who began acting when she was a teenager. She has a prolific film career and films include Cleopatra (Joseph Mankiewicz,1962) when she was age 16, with Elizabeth Taylor; Krull (Peter Yates, 1983), Dune (David Lynch, 1984) and the directorial debut by Prince, Under the Cherry Moon (1986). At the time of this photo she had just completed Macbeth (1971) directed by the Polish-French film director Roman Polanski, whose wife, Sharon Tate, had been murdered recently in Hollywood by the Charles Manson family.  Annis is shown in this picture with Ferdy Mayne, who also worked with Polanski in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate whom Polanski married the following year. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career and achieved international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams, who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo. Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who also came to the Cork festival. Pertwee, in a dinner jacket with a Cork Film International ribbon pinned to its left lapel, is turned towards Annis with his arm around her shoulders. He was an English playwright and screenwriter from a prolific family of actors including his father the actor and playwright Roland Pertwee, his brother the actor Jon Pertwee, best known for his Dr Who, and his nephew the actor Sean Pertwee. As well as TV work Michael Pertwee’s screenwriting credits include Richard Lester’s A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966) with an award-winning score by Stephen Sondheim and One More Time (Jerry Lewis, 1970) starring Sammy Davis Jr. At the time of this photo, dated 1972, he had just finished Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World (Joseph McGrath, 1973) with an all-star cast including Spike Milligan and Milo O’Shea.
