An account of the resource
The 1987 festival programme cover is predominantly white with a large pixilated image of an eye against a plain background. Lines radiate from above the eye projecting onto the heading at the upper quarter of the programme. The block typeface is in black with supporting fonts in blue and red. The back of the programme is an advertisement by festival sponsors Murphy’s for Murphy’s Irish Stout and comprises an image of a full pint of black stout with a cream-topped head. The logo of Murphy’s Irish Stout is realised on the front of the glass and light reflects off the condensation of the cold glass.<br /><br />The 1987 programme is a soft card-bound programme measuring 29.5 x 20.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 72 numbered pages. The programme is worn and damaged at the staples. Note: article by Kevin Rockett and Luke Gibbons, <em>Cinema & Ireland </em>(pp<em>.</em>68-70).

The 1959 festival programme cover is black with a white insert onto which an image and the text is printed. The image is one of the world aligned with what seems like the frame of a screen through which we can view the globe. The continents of Africa, Europe, and Asia are outward-facing in a light brown colour. Text is presented in pink and green and lies just below the image. An Irish harp emblem is placed at the bottom of the page to the left. <br /><br />The back cover is plain white with no image and the printer credited at the foot of the programme. The programme is a soft card-bound issue measuring 16.5cm x 24cm. The bind is stapled and it has 40 numbered pages.

The original 1958 festival programme is a soft card-bound issue measuring 16.5cm x 24.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 31 numbered pages. There is some wear & tear on the cover – particularly around the staples on the spine and the top left corner. <br /><br />The pdf of the 1958 programme includes profiles of President of the Jury John Grierson, animator Joy Batchelor, film critic Bjørn Rasmussen, and MGM rep Douglas King. Articles include <em>Robert Flaherty in Retrospect</em> by PO’C (Padraig O Coileáin?) (pp.23-26) and <em>A Tribute to Bresson </em>by Robert Breathnach (pp.27-31). The programme listing includes the German-made <em>Kanonen Serenade</em> (<em>Cannon Serenade</em>) (Wolfgang Staudte, 1958) starring the Italian actor and director Vittorio De Sica, who was a regular visitor to the festival in its early years. De Sica also starred in the Italian comedy film <em>Padri e Figli</em> (<em>Fathers and Sons</em>) (Mario Monicelli, 1957) which also played at the festival in 1958.

The original 1959 programme is a soft card-bound issue measuring 16.5cm x 24cm. The bind is stapled and it has 40 numbered pages. There is some minor wear & tear on the cover – particularly around the staples on the bind. The inside cover is signed by Jean Healy.<br /><br />The 1959 festival programme pdf includes profiles of Jury president Charles Frend, Dutch director Bert Haanstra, German director Hilmar Hoffmann, film critic Bjørn Rasmussen and the writer Alf MacLochlainn (1926-2018) – who went on to become director of the National Library of Ireland. The programme notes that the German film critic and friend of the festival, Francis Koval, gave a lecture on film festivals on Sunday 27 September 1959. Articles include <em>East Comes West</em>, about the Japanese Film Industry and its relationship with the Cork Film Festival by Sean Hendrick (pp.34-35) and a tribute to the Italian film director, Vittorio De Sica by Robert Breathnach (pp.35-36). The listing for <em>Mise Éire</em> (George Morrison, 1959) with music composed by Seán Ó Riada, covers the final page of the programme and details the magnitude of the task in making this documentary. As well as programme listings the brochure includes a large number of advertisements from local and national companies across all sectors of the business world.

The original 1960 programme is a soft card-bound issue measuring 24cm x 16.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 40 numbered pages. It has some wear & tear on the cover – particularly around the rust-damaged staples. A pencilled name ‘Noel Ryan-Savoy’ is scribbled across the top edge of the programme. <br /><br />This pdf of the 1960 programme includes profiles of Jury president, the animator John Halas (1912-1995), American director Robert Aldrich (1918-1983), Italian director Vinicio Marinucci (1916-2001), film journalist Gilbert Salachas, writer Conor Sweeney, and the commentator Fr Agnellus Andrew (1908-1987), Vice-president of the Pontifical Commission for Social Communications. Articles include <em>The Post-War Polish School of Filmmakers</em> by Robert Breathnach et al (pp.36-38) and a tribute to Sir Carol Reed by Robert Breathnach (pp.39-40). As well as programme listings the brochure includes a number of advertisements from local and national companies across all sectors of the business world.

The original 1961 programme is a soft card-bound issue measuring 20.5cm x 13.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 40 numbered pages. <br /><br />The pdf of the 1961 programme includes profiles of the film critic Jerzy Bossak, film critic Charles Ford, German film critic Klaus Hebecker, filmmaker John Ormond, and cinéaste Seán ó Briain who also worked as an assistant editor for <em>Mise Éire</em>. Articles include <em>The World Laughs</em> (p.39) and <em>A Tribute to Fritz Lang</em> (p.40). Programme listings include a listing for <em>Saoirese</em> (George Morrison, 1961) (p.5). <em>Saoirse</em> is the second of the trilogy of documentary films intended to give a picture of the history of Ireland. <em>Mise Éire</em> (George Morrison, 1959) with music composed by Seán Ó Riada, covers the final page of the 1959 programme and details the magnitude of the task in making this documentary. Programme listings also include <em>Das Leben von Adolf Hitler</em> (<em>The Life of Adolf Hitler</em>) (1961) directed by Paul Rotha who came to the festival that year; <em>Ressalah Ailallah</em> (<em>Letter to God</em>) (Kamal Attia, 1961) and the award-winning <em>La Ciociara</em> (<em>Two Women</em>) (1960), starring Sophia Loren, whose director Vittorio De Sica was a visitor to the festival in its early years. As well as programme listings the brochure includes a number of advertisements from local and national companies across all sectors of the business world.

The 1976 festival programme cover is predominantly green-coloured with the image of a globe, wrapped in a strip of film whose tip settles on the city of Cork. The strip spells out the word <em>film</em> across the lower half of the page. The back cover is plain white. The 1976 programme is a soft card-bound programme measuring 28cm x 22.5cm. The bind is stapled and it has 36 numbered pages. <br /><br />Articles in the programme include <em>A Retrospective View</em> by Dr SF Pettit, UCC (pp.5-7), <em>A Tribute to Satyajit Ray</em> by Conor Sweeney (p.31).
