They are standing in a huddle having a conversation; Breen is half-turned towards Philbin and the Lord Mayor while Truffaut looks on. Born in 1932 François Truffaut was a French film director, screenwriter, producer, actor, and film critic. His career spans forty years of filmmaking and in 1959 his autobiographical film The 400 Blows ushered in French New Wave (La Nouvelle Vague) cinema with the rejection of traditional film-making structures. Around the time of this photograph, dated 1973, Truffaut had released Day for Night (1973) which won him an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. His final film was Confidentially Yours (1983) which he made as an homage to his favourite director Alfred Hitchcock. He died a year later, age 52, from a brain tumor and is buried in Paris. Lord Mayor Pat Kerrigan also died young, age 51. He served as Lord Mayor of Cork for the 1973 to 1974 term of office and was a well-regarded Irish politician and trade union official affiliated with the Labour Party. He was nominated to the 13th Seanad by Liam Cosgrave, the then Taoiseach, where he served until 1977. Kerrigan won a seat for the Cork City constituency in the 1977 general election taking his seat that year.  Pat Kerrigan is the father of Cathal Kerrigan who worked as a librarian in University College Cork for many years before his retirement in 2020. Kerrigan recently collaborated with the artist Padraig Robinson on his book Gaze Against Imperialism (Metaflux Publishing, 2019). On the right of the photo, the unidentified man might be from West Africa given his traditional national costume. He is wearing a light-coloured richly embroidered kaftan style robe known as an agbada. These cotton robes are usually worn on ceremonial occasions and originate in West Africa but today can be seen in all regions of Africa and amongst the modern-day diaspora. Agbada are often worn with a soft fez type hat, as in this picture, known as Aso Oke hats. These soft embroidered hats are worn slouched to one side of the wearer’s head over the left ear. Interestingly, however, if the hat is slouched over the right ear, as in this image it might signify that the wearer is unmarried. Pat Kerrigan was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1973 to 1974. He was an Irish politician and trade union official affiliated with the Labour Party. After failing to win a seat in the 1969 and 1973 general elections he was nominated to the 13th Seanad by Taoiseach, Liam Cosgrave, where he served until 1977. He won a seat for the Cork City constituency in the 1977 general election and took his seat that year before dying two years later, age 51. In this picture Kerrigan is standing next to the American actor Carroll Baker. Born in 1931 Baker was a well-regarded Academy nominated actor best known for her career-defining role as ‘Baby Doll’ Meehan in the 1956 film Baby Doll directed by Elia Kazan. Her films include The Big Country (William Wyler, 1958) and How the West Was Won (John Ford, Henry Hathaway, George Marshall, 1962) and the George Peppard romance The Carpetbaggers (1964). Despite her success, she had a difficult relationship with the studios, such as Warner and Paramount, whose contracts tied her to work for them whatever her wishes. Baker left Hollywood in the late 1960s and moved to Italy working in Italian thrillers and horror movies which allowed her work outside the constraints of the Hollywood moral code as well as her probable blacklisting by the studios.  At the time of this photograph Baker had filmed the leading role in Corrado Farina’s horror film Baba Yaga (1973). The Italian director Farina was also at the festival (and was on the Jury) and it is probable that they were promoting Baba Yaga that year. François Truffaut (1932-1984) was a French film director, screenwriter, producer, actor and film critic at Cahiers. To the right Dermot Breen gazes off to the distance. Frank Poole was a managing director of Rank Film Productions, London during the 1960s until his retirement in the late 1970s. The Rank Organisation was a British film company whose contract players made regular appearances at the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s in particular. Films made by the Rank organisation during his era were dominated by the 'Carry On' film series as well as big-budget movies; investment steadily declined in the 1980s however before losses in the 1990s led to the eventual demise of what was once a powerful player in the film industry. Breen, with a cigarette in hand, was a colleague of Sanquest for many years – they would have come across each other in Cork through their involvement with the theatre. For example, when the Cork Opera House burnt down in 1954 the Palace theatre, then managed by Dermot Breen, stepped in offering its stage to the Cork Operatic Society. Sanquest was then set-designer for the Cork Opera House and the Cork Operatic Society. By the late fifties Breen gave up managing the theatre in order to run the film festival and his job at the Palace was taken over by Dan Donovan. Frank Sanquest was also a journalist for the then Cork Examiner and worked as its arts editor from 1940 to 1987. He was the father of five children with his wife Rose, including the artist Kevin Sanquest and the writer Rosalind (Roz) Crowley. In 2009 Kevin Sanquest created a national portrait collection in Fota House, Carrigtwohill, Cork, titled Inheritance – Honouring the Cork Legacy; he passed away in 2013. Interestingly Kevin Sanquest was the first manager of the Cork music legend Rory Gallagher and the band Taste. His sister, the journalist and author Roz Crowley, refers to the legacy of Rory Gallagher in her book Macroom Mountain Dew – Memories of Ireland’s First Rock Festival (OnStream Publications Ltd., 2016). This is an early photograph of the Cork-born artist and journalist Sanquest, taken in the 1960s. As with other photographs of him in the archive he is wearing his trademark dickie bow but has yet to succumb to wearing glasses. The bespectacled actor David Kossoff stands next to him and appears to be peering around Sanquest who is smiling at the camera holding aloft a plate. The actor Margaret Rose Mount, in a leopard-skin coat draped around her bare shoulders, is smiling broadly while her unidentified companion, on the far right of the photo, looks towards Sanquest and his plate. Behind them we can just about make out a promotional poster for Harp Lager hanging on the wall next to the draped curtains. David Kossoff (1919-2005) was an English actor, writer and raconteur. He was born in East London to Russian-Jewish parents and worked as a furniture designer before becoming an actor. He has many film credits and won a British Academy Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Film for his role in The Young Lovers (Anthony Asquith,1954). He followed this with the Oscar-winning short film The Bespoke Overcoat (Jack Clayton,1956) which was written by Nikolai Gogol and Wolf Mankowitz, who also came to Cork, and The Mouse That Roared (Jack Arnold,1959) starring Peter Sellers and Jean Seberg who came to Cork with the film St Joan (Otto Preminger, 1957). On the television Kossoff was best-known for his role as the hen-pecked husband Alf Larkin in The Larkins (1958). His wife in the series was the English actor Margaret Rose Mount OBE (1915-2001) who is identified in this photo with Kossoff. Mount also acted with Kossoff in the British comedy film Inn for Trouble (CM Pennington-Richards, 1960) which was a spin-off from The Larkins. Mount had an extensive television, film and stage career with film credits including Hotel Paradiso (Peter Glenville,1966) with Alec Guinness and Gina Lollobrigida, and Oliver! (Carol Reed, 1968) with Oliver Reed and Harry Secombe. Her stage credits include the title role of Brecht’s Mother Courage (1977) and Uncle Vanya (1996) with Derek Jacobi at the National Theatre before she retired soon after due to her failing eyesight. We note that David Kossoff was the father of the blues guitarist Paul Kossoff (1950-1976) from the band Free which was responsible for the hit ‘All Right Now’ (1970). Wikipedia notes that the Rolling Stone magazine ranked Paul Kossoff 51st in their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Paul Kossoff’s health was poor due to his drug addictions and he died age 25 from a pulmonary embolism. After his death his father, David Kossoff, spent the rest of his life campaigning fervently against drugs and toured schools with his one-man stage show, The Late Great Paul, about his son’s death and the effect that it had on him and his family. Title A name given to the resource French film director François Truffaut with Dermot Breen Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, François Truffaut, Dermot Breen Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the French film director François Truffaut and the festival director Dermot Breen at the Harp-sponsored festival club. They are standing close together in conversation. Breen is wearing a festival ribbon marked 'director' and his glasses poke out of his breast pocket. Truffaut, cigarette in hand, is smiling as he talks to Breen. Behind them, the logo for Harp Lager can be seen adorning the umbrellas which are dotted around the outdoor space. Truffaut’s visit to Cork must have been a great coup for the festival. At the time he was one of the foremost film directors in the world with a career that spanned forty years of filmmaking before his untimely death in 1984, age 52. Around the time of this photograph, Truffaut had released Day for Night (1973) which won him an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. It was the film that instigated a bitter rivalry between himself and the French director Jean-Luc Godard for its apparent attack on the commercial nature of Godard’s Le Mépris (Contempt), (1963). Interestingly Truffaut’s colleague, the cinematographer Raoul Coutard, and French New Wave stalwart, worked with the director and Guardian journalist, Peter Lennon, to make the documentary Rocky Road to Dublin in 1967. The documentary looked at the modern state of Ireland and in particular its relationship with the Catholic Church. It was banned in Ireland and the Cork Film Festival refused to show it initially but, following its acceptance by the Cannes Film Festival in 1969, Cork was somewhat embarrassed into showing it the following year (albeit in a lunchtime slot which was badly attended due to the festival organizing a free lunch for delegates at the same time in Kinsale – some distance away). Its success, amongst the French Left in particular, caught the attention of international media and it remains an example of French New Wave’s informality via the work of Coutard who was famous for shooting with a handheld camera. Raoul Coutard also worked extensively with Jean-Luc Goddard and Jacques Demy; he died in Paris, age 92, in 2016. (Erica Eisen, ‘What do you do with your revolution?
