The fair-haired actor Shane Briant, in a suede jacket accessorised with a cravat, is standing on the left listening to the conversation. Wetherell, at the centre, in a dark-patterned dress, is turned to her companion and smiling. Both Wetherell and Briant worked together in the British horror film Demons of the Mind directed by Peter Sykes which was released in 1972 – the year that this photo was taken at the festival. Born in 1943, Virginia Wetherell was an English actor best known for her roles in Hammer horror films such as Dr Jekyll and Sister Hyde (Roy Ward Baker, 1971) and aforementioned Demons of the Mind. She also appeared, as the naked actor tempting Malcolm McDowell as Alex, in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange in 1971. Wetherell had a large body of television work throughout the 1960s to the 1980s, including the part of Dyoni in the first Dalek story series of Doctor Who. In 1971 Wetherell opened a vintage clothes shop in London’s Notting Hill, known as Virginia, shutting down in 2015 when Wetherell (now Bates) turned 72.  Wetherell's companion in this picture is the actor and novelist, London-born Shane Briant. Briant studied at Trinity College Dublin before becoming an actor best known for his roles in Hammer Film Productions. He has many television credits, both in England and Australia where he settled, as well as film credits including the British Cold War thriller The Mackintosh Man (John Huston, 1973) with Paul Newman and James Mason (who can also be found in this archive), and as Clifford Chatterley in Lady Chatterley's Lover (Just Jaeckin, 1981). Briant's first short film, A Message from Fallujah (Richard Gibson, Shane Briant, 2005), won a 'Best of the Fest' award at the 2005 Los Angeles International Short Film Festival and was considered for an Academy Award that year. Price, in a tweed jacket and holding a camera, smiles for the camera next to her young companion. The photo, which is stamped by the Irish Tourist Board (Bord Fáilte Éireann), notes that she is the daughter of Cadwallader Kelsey of Philadelphia. Cadwallader Kelsey was the founder of the Kelsey car company and ran it from 1897 until its demise in 1924. His three-wheel automobile, Auto-tri, is now on display in the Smithsonian Institution. Prior to his death in 1970 he was working on developing a flying automobile, the Skycar. (The New York Times, 18.05.1970.) Being from Philadelphia, Anita Price would have been familiar with the link between the founder of Pennsylvania, Admiral William Penn, and Macroom, County Cork. Penn’s father, Sir William Penn, lived in Macroom Castle for some years following Cromwell’s successful battle during the English Civil War. He later lost the lands after the restoration of the monarchy and received an estate in Shanagarry, East Cork, in 1667. His son, the Quaker William Penn, would found the State of Pennsylvania after spending time in County Cork at his father’s estate during the 1660s. In this photo Price is posing in front of the 1970s façade of Macroom's Penn Coffee House, advertising a 'Kingsize William Penn burger' on its window. The photo notes that she was the then Managing Director of CINE (Council on International Nontheatrical Events) in Washington DC. Founded in 1957, CINE was a non-profit organisation whose mission was to select American films and documentaries for international film and video festivals. It awarded prestigious Golden Eagles to those selected to represent America and recipients include Mel Brooks (The Critic, 1963), Barbara Koppel (American Dream, 1990; A Century of Women, 1994; Bearing Witness, 2005) and Martin Scorsese (No Direction Home, 2006). In the year of this photo, 1972, the award was won by Ron Howard for Deed of Daring-Do (1969). The small convivial group is turned towards each other smiling as they chat. Laurence Harvey (1928-1973) died from cancer the year after this picture was taken. He was a Lithuanian-born English actor and director and has a prolific filmography. Around the time this image was taken he had starred in Escape to the Sun (Menahem Golan, 1972) and The Deep (Orson Welles, 1970) which was an unfinished film directed by Orson Welles. When Harvey died in 1973 it ended any chance of Welles finishing the picture. Towb, standing on the left of this picture, is turned towards the Mitchells who both hold a liqueur glass and cigarette in hand. Harry Towb (1925-2009) was a popular actor from Northern Ireland who began his acting career travelling with theatrical groups on both sides of the border. His work at the English National Theatre was highly regarded including parts in Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Memoirs (1986), Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1996), and Nikolai Erdman’s Russian comedy The Mandate (2004). The film critic Eric Shorter wrote of him: "Towb was one of the gentlest, most imaginative and thoughtful actors of his generation… He was always on the stage if he could afford it – taking television and film work to balance out his income." (The Guardian, 30.07.2009.) In this photo, Towb is talking to the writer James Mitchell (1926-2002) and his wife Delia to whom he was married from 1968 until her death in 1990. Mitchell was a prolific writer, writing under his own name and the pen names James Munro and Patrick O McGuire. He wrote the successful television series When the Boat Comes In (BBC) which ran between 1976 and 1981. Around the time of this photo, dated 1972, Mitchell had just completed a successful run of Callan (Thames Television), which ran between 1969 and 1972, starring Edward Woodward as the hitman David Callan. Wild, with his distinctive long hair and a festival ribbon pinned to his open-neck shirt, would have been around 20 years old in this picture. Jack Wild was best known for his role as the Artful Dodger in Oliver! (Carol Reed, 1968) which also starred Oliver Reed and Harry Secombe. Wild received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Oliver! and went on to work in TV and film including an episode of The Onedin Line (1972) with Peter Gilmore, who also came to the Cork festival.  In 1971 Wilde starred alongside Daniel Latimer and Tracy Hyde in Melody (Warrin Hussein, 1971) written by Alan Parker and produced by David Puttnam - who now lives in West Cork. Following Melody Wild starred in The 14 (1973), directed by David Hemmings who was a visitor to the festival around the same time as Wild. Wild, however, never replicated the success of his debut role in Oliver! and, following a life of health and personal issues, died from cancer, age 53, in 2006. They are standing together, drink in hand, some smiling for the camera. Sheamus Smith, wearing his distinctive glasses, stands on the left. Smith started working as a cameraman at the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) in 1961 before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. The following decade he was appointed managing director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). He published his memoir Off Screen (Gill and MacMillan) in 2007. The producer Greg Smith (1939-2009), in a light-coloured jacket, stands on the far right of the photo. Smith owned a talent agency in London where he signed on the Irish film-maker Norman Cohen with whom turned a series of risqué best-selling paperback books, by Christopher Wood, into a successful run of ‘confessions’ movies including Confessions of a Pop Performer (Norman Cohen, 1975), Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976), and Confessions from a Holiday Camp (Norman Cohen, 1977). He went on to produce Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977), starring his then-wife Lynda Bellingham who was also at the Cork Film Festival. Hillary O’Herlihy was married to the Cork-born, Glasheen-raised, RTÉ television broadcaster, and Irish Film Board Chairman Bill O’Herlihy. O’Herlihy (1938-2015) was a household name best known for his sports coverage, along with co-presenters Eamon Dunphy and John Giles, on programmes such as Sunday Sport and Sports Stadium and in his time presented 10 FIFA World Cups and 10 Summer Olympic Games. He was a keen cinephile and brought this to his work at the Irish Film Board. O’Herlihy promoted the film industry and in particular, was keen to develop filming in rural Ireland. He also worked for some time as PR for the Cork Film Festival where he emphasised the focus on Irish film. This is an early photograph of the Cork-born artist and journalist Sanquest, taken in the 1960s. As with other photographs of him in the archive he is wearing his trademark dickie bow but has yet to succumb to wearing glasses. The bespectacled actor David Kossoff stands next to him and appears to be peering around Sanquest who is smiling at the camera holding aloft a plate. The actor Margaret Rose Mount, in a leopard-skin coat draped around her bare shoulders, is smiling broadly while her unidentified companion, on the far right of the photo, looks towards Sanquest and his plate. Behind them we can just about make out a promotional poster for Harp Lager hanging on the wall next to the draped curtains. David Kossoff (1919-2005) was an English actor, writer and raconteur. He was born in East London to Russian-Jewish parents and worked as a furniture designer before becoming an actor. He has many film credits and won a British Academy Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer to Film for his role in The Young Lovers (Anthony Asquith,1954). He followed this with the Oscar-winning short film The Bespoke Overcoat (Jack Clayton,1956) which was written by Nikolai Gogol and Wolf Mankowitz, who also came to Cork, and The Mouse That Roared (Jack Arnold,1959) starring Peter Sellers and Jean Seberg who came to Cork with the film St Joan (Otto Preminger, 1957). On the television Kossoff was best-known for his role as the hen-pecked husband Alf Larkin in The Larkins (1958). His wife in the series was the English actor Margaret Rose Mount OBE (1915-2001) who is identified in this photo with Kossoff. Mount also acted with Kossoff in the British comedy film Inn for Trouble (CM Pennington-Richards, 1960) which was a spin-off from The Larkins. Mount had an extensive television, film and stage career with film credits including Hotel Paradiso (Peter Glenville,1966) with Alec Guinness and Gina Lollobrigida, and Oliver! (Carol Reed, 1968) with Oliver Reed and Harry Secombe. Her stage credits include the title role of Brecht’s Mother Courage (1977) and Uncle Vanya (1996) with Derek Jacobi at the National Theatre before she retired soon after due to her failing eyesight. We note that David Kossoff was the father of the blues guitarist Paul Kossoff (1950-1976) from the band Free which was responsible for the hit ‘All Right Now’ (1970). Wikipedia notes that the Rolling Stone magazine ranked Paul Kossoff 51st in their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Paul Kossoff’s health was poor due to his drug addictions and he died age 25 from a pulmonary embolism. After his death his father, David Kossoff, spent the rest of his life campaigning fervently against drugs and toured schools with his one-man stage show, The Late Great Paul, about his son’s death and the effect that it had on him and his family.
