Born Victoria Dawn Addams in England she spent her early life in Calcutta, India, after her Cork-born mother, Ethel Mary (née Hickie) passed away when she was a child. We can see the back of the choir, facing the conductor, as they sing. The conductor is looking down at his music - his arms raised in gesticulation. To the right of the choir an organist, his music strewn on the lid of the piano, accompanies the choir. Below them we can see the congregation seated in church pews that stretch before us and up as far as the mosaic-tiled apse that surrounds the marble altar. The Church is not identified but we can tell from this photo that it is the interior of St Francis Church on Liberty Street in Cork. With its Byzantine-styled red-brick exterior the Church and Friary of St Francis was founded on Liberty Street in the mid-nineteenth century, before being rebuilt in July 1953. It is tucked behind the Cork Courthouse and partially stands on the site of old Broad Lane Church. Whilst typical in style for 1950s Ireland it retains notable interior fittings that distinguish it, such as its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Professor Umberto Noni who declared it to be 'the very crowning of [his] life's work'. Title A name given to the resource President Patrick Hillery on MacCurtain Street, Cork Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, President, Patrick Hillery, MacCurtain Street, King Street, Cork Baptist Church, Arthur Hill Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the President of Ireland, Patrick Hillery, inspecting the troops on MacCurtain Street, Cork. He is wearing a dark suit and his trademark trilby hat walking along the street, accompanied by a uniformed officer in a tailored tunic and Sam Browne belt. Uniformed soldiers, in regulation dark berets, line up before him, standing at attention, with their arms fixed to their sides and their thumbs parallel to their trousers. In the distance, just before MacCurtain street meets St Patrick's Hill, we see the Army band. Patrick Hillery (1923-2008) was a Fianna Fáil politician who served as the sixth President of Ireland from 1976 to 1990 following some time as Ireland's first European commissioner from 1973 to 1976. In this picture Hillery is seen walking past the distinctive façade of the Cork Baptist Church which was established in King Street (now MacCurtain Street) in 1892. Its red-brick façade, with its unusual tower and carving over the door entrance, is a distinctive landmark on MacCurtain Street. On its right, and just out of shot, we note the unique red-break façade of Victoria Buildings which were designed by the Cork-born architect Arthur Hill (1846-1921). The image is interesting because of the nature of the award itself which is an elaborate three-tiered multi-column confection unlike the more austere St Finbarr awards attributed to the sculptor Seamus Murphy. The date attached to this photograph is 'guess 60s'.
