Title A name given to the resource German actor Ferdy Mayne with Michael Twomey Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Ferdy Mayne, Michael Twomey Description An account of the resource <ol start="346"></ol> This is a black and white photo of the German-born actor Ferdy Mayne on stage with the Irish actor Michael Twomey.  Mayne on the left of this photo, with his distinctive dark eye brows, is speaking into the microphone while Twomey looks on, papers in hand. Born in Cork, Michael Twomey (1933-2017) grew up on the Mardyke and attended the Presentation Brothers College. Twomey will be remembered in Cork, and beyond, for his two-hander Cha and Miah with his friend Frank Duggan on the RTÉ television show Hall’s Pictorial Weekly. His other stage work included work with the playwright John B Keane for whom he played in many of his productions, including Many Young Men of Twenty, The Year of the Hiker and Sharon’s Grave. He gave his last stage performance as in 2015 two years before his death. In 2013, along with Frank Duggan and Billa O’Connell, Twomey was awarded the Freedom of Cork City for his “unwavering lifetime contribution to professional and amateur theatre, arts, drama and song.” (The Irish Times, 09.09.2017) The actor Ferdinand ‘Ferdy’ Mayne, was born in Germany in 1916. Being a Jew, he was sent to England from Germany as a child to stay with his aunt and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and the Old Vic School. A fluent German speaker he was in demand for propaganda broadcasts during the Second World War and supposedly operated as an informant for the M15. Mayne had a prolific film and theatre career. His stage work includes the role of Max in the long-running Rodgers and Hammerstein production The Sound of Music. Mayne would later achieve international recognition for his various portrayals of suave criminals, Nazi officers, or Hammer horror roles including head vampire in The Fearless Vampire Killers (Roman Polanski, 1967) starring Sharon Tate, Where Eagles Dare (Brian G Hutton, 1968), and The Vampire Lovers (Roy Ward Baker, 1970) starring Kate O’Hara and Dawn Addams (who was a regular visitor to Cork in the early days of the film festival with her then-husband Prince Vittorio Massimo). Mayne later featured in Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with Hannelore Elsner, who was in Cork too around the same time as this photo, and he also worked with Kubrick in Barry Lyndon (Stanley Kubrick, 1975).  In his later years Mayne worked mainly in Europe where he was a favourite with German audiences, and lived in America, working until the late 1990s. His final film role was as General Karl von Weber in the neo-Nazi political thriller The Killers Within (Paul Leder, 1995) before he returned to England, where he died in 1998 following the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. Elsner’s long-standing career ended only with her death in 2019, age 77. In the early 1970s Elsner appeared in The Stuff That Dreams are Made Of (Alfred Vohrer, 1972) and the German drama film Trip to Vienna (Edgar Reitz, 1973) with the German actor Ferdy Mayne, who also came to the Cork Film Festival in 1972. Elsner is best remembered in Germany for playing the title role of Inspector Lea Sommer, in a long-running German TV series Die Kommissarin (The Inspector) which ran from 1994 to 2006. She also played the lead role in the highly acclaimed black-and-white film Die Unberührbare (No Place to Go) (Oskar Roehler, 2000) based on the life of novelist Gisela Elstner, the mother of the director. The film went to the Cannes Film Festival and won Elsner the Deutscher Filmpreis (German Film Award) for Best Actress. In his review, The New York Times critic, A.O. The club was sponsored by Harp Lager whose name adorns the large umbrella in the background. The back of the photo identifies only Gerry Jones but we recognise the film festival director Dermot Breen, Frank Poole and the lady (who might be his wife) from other photos in the archive. The convivial gathering are all smiling looking up at the camera. On the far left a bespectacled Poole is smiling up at the camera seated next to Dermot Breen who is half-turned towards him. Frank Poole was a managing director of Rank Film Productions, London during the 1960s until his retirement in the late 1970s. The Rank Organisation was a British film company whose contract players made regular appearances at the Cork Film Festival during the 1950s in particular. On the far right Gerry Jones, with a distinctive dark eye-patch over his right eye, is seated looking down towards the table. Jones might be considered an incongruous addition to the group; he was a Dublin business man who was a notable figure of 1970s Ireland when he stood by the then Taoiseach Charles Haughey during the 1970 'Arms Trial'. The trial involved the indictment, and ultimate acquittal, of Haughey and his colleague Neil Blaney for the alleged involvement in a conspiracy to smuggle arms to the IRA in Northern Ireland. In 2001 the Irish Independent reported that secret British papers released by the Public Record Office in London noted that all twelve jurors at the time had been contacted by Gerry Jones (since deceased) in order to intimidate them but this was not substantiated ('Jones 'tracked arms trial jurors', Irish Independent, 19.04.2001). (Even though this picture is marked '1960s', based on other photos in the archive we provisionally date it 1970.) Both men are in dress suits accessorised with bow-ties. Jones on the left, with his trademark eye-patch, is shown in profile shaking the hand of Peter Barry. Jones was a Dublin business man, and a striking figure of 1970s Ireland when he stood by the then Taoiseach Charles Haughey during the 1970 'Arms Trial'.  Peter Barry, also in profile, is leaning towards Jones as he passes over a silver platter which glistens in the light of a camera flash. Born in Blackrock, Cork,  Barry (1928-2016) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1970 to 1971. He was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1969 and would go on to serve at eight successive elections including a stint as deputy leader under Garret Fitzgerald in 1979, Minister for the Environment from 1981 to 1982 and Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1982 to 1983. It was as Minster for Foreign Affairs that he was involved in the negotiations of the Anglo-Irish Agreement and bore witness its signing in 1985. Seemingly it was Peter Barry’s leadership during this time that ensured British reluctance was overcome during the negotiations – an accord that will forever be associated with him. He retired after the 1997 general election and his seat was taken over by his daughter Deirdre Clune. However it is as tea-maker that many Corkonians remember Peter Barry. His legacy as one of Cork’s most successful businessmen, taking over the tea business established in 1901 by his grandfather James J. The Rank Organisation was a British film company whose contracted players included the English actor Tony Wright who also attended the Cork festival. This convivial group includes Tony Wright with the Fianna Fáil politician (and later Lord Mayor of Cork) Augustine 'Gus' Healy crouched just below him.
