Seán O'Leary (1941-2006) was an Irish accountant, barrister, judge and Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork in 1972. (So while this photo is not dated we can date it as 1972 given his term of office.) O'Leary studied at the University College Cork (UCC) before being called to the Bar and was appointed a high court judge in 2003. He noted that holding the Mayoralty of Cork was one of the greatest honors of his life. ('Esteemed judge, mayor and senator was a backroom giant', Irish Independent, 06.01.2007) In this image O'Leary is standing at the altar of the Byzantine-styled red-brick Church and Friary of St Francis which is distinguished by its stained glass windows and doors. It is spacious, full of light, and decorated with mosaics designed in the main by the Italian artist, Umberto Noni. Its city location and spacious interior made it an ideal location for the crowds that attended the annual Cork Film Festival St Finbarr Mass. She has a mischievous grin on her face and little else except bath bubbles to dress her. The location of the bath is not identified but as the photo is credited to the Cork-based photographer Donal Sheehan we guess that the bathroom must be Cork-based too. The white-tiled bathroom, with a white transistor radio perched on the ledge of the bath, provides the perfect backdrop to the olive-toned skin of a glowing Bellingham. Born in 1948 and adopted later that year, Lynda Bellingham was an English actor, broadcaster, and author who was a familiar presence on British television, in particular for her work as a lunchtime chat show host on ‘Loose Women’ between 2007 and 2011, with whom she made more than 300 appearances. She also had a long-standing television career with such shows as All Creatures Great and Small and Doctor Who, as well as film credits that include Confessions of a Driving Instructor (Claire Brough, 1976) and Stand up, Virgin Soldiers (Norman Cohen, 1977) which would have coincided with her visit to the festival in the late seventies. Bellingham was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2013 for her services to charity work. She published her autobiography There’s Something I’m Dying to Tell You in 2014, shortly before her death from cancer later that year, at the age of 66. A bespectacled Smith is standing on the far left, in a light-coloured suit, striped shirt and holding a cigarette and glass in his right hand slightly raised. He is standing next to Hampson, wearing a dark dress and a glass held in her clasped hands. On the far right Harpur, in a tweed jacket, smiles at the camera, his glass also raised. Sheamus Smith had an illustrious career with RTÉ and beyond. He started out as a photojournalist for the now defunct Dublin paper Evening Press before moving to Canada to study film and television. He returned to Ireland in 1961 to join the newly formed Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ) starting as a cameraman before becoming a producer and director with the station in 1963. The following decade he was appointed Managing Director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975 and was instrumental in setting up the Irish Film Board. Most notably he was appointed Irish film censor and would go on to become Ireland's longest-serving film censor in the history of the State (1986-2002). The RTÉ archives remind us that Smith was present at the assassination of Indira Ghandi in October 1984. She was on her way to meet with Sheamus Smith and Rory O'Farrell in her New Delhi garden when she was shot dead by her bodyguards in front of Smith. An interview that Ghandi had made with the Irish broadcaster, Marian Finucane, had been recorded three months earlier and was broadcast that October in a special edition of <a href="https://www.rte.ie/archives/2014/1031/655796-indira-ghandi-born-into-politics/">The Woman's Programme</a> dedicated to Indira Ghandi. He is shown, elbows resting on the table holding up a cigar in his left hand, listening to someone out of sight.  The date of the photo is '1960s' which would make Roy Edward Disney, born in 1930, and whom this photo closely resembles, approximately 40 years which makes us suspect either the date or subject of the photo. Another similar image in the archive, dated '1970s' might be more accurate. Roy Disney, who had a home in West Cork, was the nephew of the late Walt Disney and a formidable longtime senior executive of the Walt Disney Company. Born in California, he worked all his life for Walt Disney Productions and made a significant impact on its direction, striving to keep it from being split up by fellow Disney executives in particular Ron Miller in 1984, and Michael Eisner in 2005. Roy Disney became an adopted native of Cork when he purchased Coolmain Castle near Kilbrittain, County Cork, in the early 1990s and, being a keen sailor, was a regular visitor to Cork race week. He died from stomach cancer in 2009, age 79. Marcus on the left, with his distinctive glasses and beard, is turned slightly towards his companion, engaged in conversation. They are seated amongst a convivial crowd, drinking and smoking, at tables made from empty beer kegs with umbrellas used for cover. Louis Marcus was born in Cork City to an Irish Jewish family. His grandfather Louis Roseberg came to Cork in 1882, from Akmian, North of Lithuania, fleeing persecution from the Russian Empire. Cork Jews were often referred to as Akmajianites. Marcus began his career in Dublin as assistant director on Mise Éire (George Morrison, 1959) and Saoirse? (George Morrison, 1965) and would continue to work on Gael-Linn documentaries until 1973. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1974 for Children at Work (Páisti ag Obair), and in 1976 he was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film at the 48th Academy Awards for Conquest of Light (1976) which detailed how Waterford Glass is made with an emphasis on the aesthetic nature of the process. Marcus is a member of Aosdána (the Irish Association of Artists limited to 250 individuals, founded in 1981 by Charles Haughey) and an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 2011 he was awarded a special prize for his outstanding work in the Irish language at the Screen Directors Guild of Ireland (SDGI) Annual Meeting of Directors including Oliver Hirschbeigel, Dearbhla Walsh, Lenny Abrahamson and Ciaran Donnelly. His first documentary film <a href="https://ifiplayer.ie/the-silent-art/">The Silent Art</a> (1958), on his friend the Cork-born sculptor Séamus Murphy (1907-1975), is of particular interest to us as Murphy designed the bronze St Finbarr statuette that was presented to prizewinners at the Cork Film Festival for some years. The Silent Art (18 mins.) was shown at the festival in 1959, with music by Bernard Geary and Declan Townsend, and commentary by festival stalwart Dan Donovan. A large audience fill the room with young listeners seated at the back and older listeners to the front. The speaker (or film) is off-camera and has the attention of the room. A double-reel movie projector is set up at the rear of the room. In the front row a man in a Macintosh coat, and recording equipment at his feet, leans forward holding a hand-held microphone listening attentively to the proceedings. Title A name given to the resource Dermot Breen on stage Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Gus Healy, Ciaran Carty, Censor Description An account of the resource This is an atmospheric black and white photo of the festival director Dermot Breen speaking to a seated audience. We only see his back but recognise him from his distinctive side profile. A single spotlight throws its glare down towards the stage and flecks of dust can be made out in the light of the camera. Guests are seated behind Breen along the width of the large stage. We can make out the low profile of the Fianna Fail politician, and sometimes Lord Mayor of Cork, Gus Healy sitting at its centre. Dermot Breen (1924-1978) was the founder of the film festival when he proposed it under the umbrella of the Cork Tóstal Council where he was secretary. Under his auspices, the Cork Film Festival opened at the Savoy Cinema in 1956 with a showing of A Town Like Alice (Jack Lee, 1956) – itself a controversial film at the time because of being withdrawn from Cannes lest it give offence to Japan due to the nature of its World War II content. Breen was born in Waterford and educated in Cork at the Presentation Brothers College on the Mardyke. He was primarily a salesman until he became the manager (1956-1964) of the Palace Cinema in Cork. His greatest achievement however was the establishment of the Cork International Film Festival in 1956 which he ran until his untimely death in 1978. It was one of the first film festivals to earn the recognition of the International Federation of Film Producers Association in Washington in 1959 allowing it to become an annual event. Breen travelled the world attending festivals receiving honours from the 1964 Berlin Film Festival in recognition of his filmic work. He was a keen advocate of short and documentary films whose legacy can be still seen today in the Cork Film Festival ethos. Interestingly Breen also worked as the State film censor from 1972 following a stint on the film censorship board from 1970. The film commentator, Ciaran Carty, saw the appointment of Breen as a time of liberalisation for film in Ireland. Carty notes that Breen seemingly tried to appease the Catholic right with a reactionary stance whilst his actual decision-making contained fewer cuts than any other censor before. (Carty, Confessions of a Sewer Rat: A Personal History of Censorship and the Irish Cinema, New Island Books, 1995, 101.) On his death Breen was replaced by Frank Hall, of Hall’s Pictorial Weekly, who would serve as Irish film censor for the coming decade. Title A name given to the resource Dermot Breen and camera crew in Fitzgerald's Park Subject The topic of the resource Cork Film Festival, Dermot Breen, Fitzgerald's Park, BBC, Lord Mayor, Edward Fitzgerald, Arthur Hill, Cork Museum, Séamus Murphy Description An account of the resource This is a black and white photo of the festival director Dermot Breen in Fitzgerald’s Park giving an interview to a BBC television crew in the late 1960s. The interview is taking place on one of the tree-lined avenues that dot the park amidst its landscaped gardens. Breen is shown talking to the interviewer, hands in pockets with a cravat tied at his neck; the brass buttons on his jacket glint in the sunlight. We see the three-man television crew from behind and note the belted-jacket on one of the crew suggesting that the photo was taken in the late 1960s or early 1970s.  The park itself is one of Cork’s finest spaces. It originated with the 1902-03 Cork International Exhibition which took place on 8 hectares of reclaimed marshlands along the Mardyke area of Cork City. Organised by the then Lord Mayor of Cork, Edward Fitzgerald, the exhibition was visited by Edward VII and Queen Alexandra and no expense was spared constructing elaborate exhibits including a switchback railway, a water chute, and a pavilion for the park. A decision was made to donate the grounds to Cork Corporation after the exhibition and the new public space was named after Edward Fitzgerald. The legacy of the exhibition can still be seen in the park today in the shape of the President’s and Lord Mayor’s Pavilion (1902) at the entrance to the Park. It was probably designed by the architect Arthur Hill, who also designed the Metropole Hotel. Interestingly Hadji Bey launched their Turkish Delight at the Exhibition and had a shop front at the Metropole Hotel so we might guess that Arthur Hill had a hand in that collaboration too. The Shrubberies House, now Cork Municipal Museum, was used as municipal offices by the Cork Corporation as headquarters to co-ordinate the rebuilding of the City Hall after it was burnt down during the Burning of Cork, by the British Auxiliaries, in December 1920. Under the aegis of Aloys Fleischmann the park set up a Cork Sculpture Park Committee in the mid-1960s, and thanks to that we can see many examples of work by the sculptor Séamus Murphy, including Dreamline and Michael Collins, as well as work from other artists including Marshall Huston and Joseph Higgins.
